{"id":1444,"date":"2011-01-28T18:12:07","date_gmt":"2011-01-28T22:12:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.broadstreetbelievers.com\/?p=1444"},"modified":"2011-01-28T18:49:50","modified_gmt":"2011-01-28T22:49:50","slug":"quick-hits-on-a-friday-afternoon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/broadstreetbelievers.com\/?p=1444","title":{"rendered":"Quick Hits on a Friday Afternoon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>-I get the frustration with the Eagles front office and with Andy Reid after the loss to the Packers, but I don&#8217;t really get all of the frustration that there seems to be among fans with regards to the defensive coordinator job.\u00a0 People are mad that they didn&#8217;t know who would replace McDermott when they fired him.\u00a0 If they felt like McDermott wasn&#8217;t getting the job done (which they obviously did), then they absolutely should have fired him.\u00a0 Now, before criticizing them, let&#8217;s see who they hire.\u00a0 And before criticizing THAT hire, we should probably see how the defense performs next season.\u00a0 In any event, I though <a title=\"sheridan\" href=\"http:\/\/www.philly.com\/philly\/sports\/eagles\/114780879.html?cmpid=15585797\" target=\"_blank\">Phil Sheridan&#8217;s Inquirer article today<\/a> hit the nail on the head.<\/p>\n<p>-Speaking of new Eagles coaches, the hiring of Jim Washburn as the new defensive line coach has received near-unanimous praise.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.philly.com\/philly\/blogs\/dneagles\/Haynesworth_Washburn_and_the_Eagles.html\" target=\"_blank\">comments from his former players<\/a> say a ton.\u00a0 Albert Haynesworth:\u00a0 &#8220;If my deal was $100 million or whatever, then Washburn deserves $90 million.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>-Though I still think the Cardinals will find a way to keep Albert Pujols, it&#8217;s starting to look more and more possible that the best player of this generation <a title=\"pujols\" href=\"http:\/\/sportsillustrated.cnn.com\/2011\/writers\/jon_heyman\/01\/17\/albert.pujols.cardinals\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">might be changing teams<\/a>.\u00a0 I&#8217;m sure that has fans of just about every team in the league pondering how they can get him onto their roster, and I&#8217;m right there with them.\u00a0 How about this: Ryan Howard for Pujols.\u00a0 Howard is a St. Louis native who would be\u00a0going home as a hometown hero, and it doesn&#8217;t hurt that he&#8217;s a former MVP winner still in his prime that&#8217;s hit more home runs than anyone in the game since he came into the league.\u00a0 Why would the Cards do that trade?\u00a0 Because they obviously don&#8217;t want to let Albert walk for nothing, and how can you sell your fans on trading\u00a0the best player in the game for prospects, especially when\u00a0the team is in contention every year?\u00a0 True, Howard also has a massive contract, but his deal pays him $25 million per year and $125 million total.\u00a0 Pujols will be looking for a 10 year\/$300 million deal, which just might be\u00a0more than the Cardinals can afford.\u00a0 But\u00a0who can afford that deal?\u00a0 Your Philadelphia Phillies.\u00a0 Especially if they&#8217;re moving that Howard deal off the books.\u00a0 And you know those concerns we have about a right-handed bat?\u00a0 You think Mr. Pujols may solve that problem to some extent?\u00a0\u00a0Ok, ok, this isn&#8217;t going to happen.\u00a0 But let me dream!\u00a0 We&#8217;ll throw in a prospect too, Cards!<\/p>\n<p>-A note on a couple of A-10 hoopsters who\u00a0haven&#8217;t gotten any national notice but are playing real well:\u00a0Richmond&#8217;s Justin Harper, who I mentioned as an honorable mention in my\u00a0list of the <a title=\"big men\" href=\"http:\/\/www.broadstreetbelievers.com\/?p=1327\" target=\"_blank\">Top 15 Big Men<\/a>, would definitely be\u00a0on that list if I made it again.\u00a0 Over the last 8 games he&#8217;s averaging just under 24 points, and\u00a0he&#8217;s 27 for 48 from 3 in those games, which is a mere 56%.\u00a0 Not bad for a\u00a06-10 forward that&#8217;s also averaging 7 boards a game.\u00a0 Temple&#8217;s Khalif Wyatt probably\u00a0hasn&#8217;t earned national\u00a0recognition yet, but he&#8217;s on his way.\u00a0 The sophomore from Norristown has stepped up in the absence of Juan Fernandez (knee injury) and is averaging 17 points over the last 5 games.\u00a0 He&#8217;s hit 14 of\u00a028 3&#8217;s in that stretch, and twice had six assists in a game.<\/p>\n<p>-With the run of Rex Ryan&#8217;s Jets to the AFC title game, there was a fair amount of talk on WIP about his dad, Buddy.\u00a0 I knew Buddy was the architect of the legendary\u00a0&#8217;85 Bears defense and the Eagles&#8217; Gang Green defenses of my childhood, but I decided to look into his career a little bit and saw that he also spent a couple years\u00a0as defensive coordinator of the Vikings in the 70&#8217;s, for the defenses known as the Purple People Eaters.\u00a0 The guy was a defensive genius.\u00a0 Too bad\u00a0he wasn&#8217;t entirely cut out to be a head coach.<\/p>\n<p>-The one good thing to come out of the life and times of Bernie Madoff continues to be his impact on his favorite baseball team, as it&#8217;s looking more and more like the Mets ownership (and ability to spend) <a title=\"wilpon\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/01\/29\/sports\/baseball\/29mets.html?hp\" target=\"_blank\">will be negatively affected<\/a> by ongoing lawsuits and allegations.<\/p>\n<p>Have a great weekend, everybody.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>-I get the frustration with the Eagles front office and with Andy Reid after the loss to the Packers, but I don&#8217;t really get all of the frustration that there seems to be among fans with regards to the defensive &hellip;
