{"id":334,"date":"2009-06-28T15:38:46","date_gmt":"2009-06-28T20:38:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.broadstreetbelievers.com\/?p=334"},"modified":"2009-06-28T15:41:18","modified_gmt":"2009-06-28T20:41:18","slug":"4-nba-draft-sleeper-picks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/broadstreetbelievers.com\/?p=334","title":{"rendered":"4 NBA Draft Sleeper Picks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ll be the first to admit that I am no NBA draft guru.\u00a0 First of all, my first-hand knowledge of players is basically limited to guys that have played big-time college basketball.\u00a0 Also, I&#8217;ve been notoriously inaccurate in projecting which players will make it on the next level and which ones won&#8217;t.\u00a0 All that being said, here are the guys I like as &#8220;sleeper&#8221; picks from this draft that should be able to play, and play well, in the league very soon.\u00a0 In a few years we can review to see if I&#8217;m getting any better at this.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"1\" vspace=\"5\" align=\"left\" width=\"298\" src=\"http:\/\/i.cdn.turner.com\/si\/2009\/writers\/andy_glockner\/03\/16\/east.region\/douglas-toney.jpg\" hspace=\"5\" alt=\"douglas\" height=\"410\" \/>29th Overall Pick:\u00a0 Toney Douglas <\/strong><em>(Lakers):\u00a0 <\/em>I think the reigning champs got a steal at the end of the first-round with Douglas, especially in such a weak year for talent.\u00a0 He might be slightly under-sized for an NBA 2-guard and not an elite athlete, but he can flat-out score and was a lock-down defender on the college level.\u00a0 He also was the heart and soul of last year&#8217;s Florida State team, and he showed his clutch abilities\u00a0in a couple of big upsets in the ACC tournament.\u00a0 He won&#8217;t be an NBA All-Star, but he should be a solid starter, and those aren&#8217;t easy to find this late in the draft.<\/p>\n<p><strong>36th Overall Pick:\u00a0 Sam Young <\/strong><em>(Grizzlies):\u00a0 <\/em>I just don&#8217;t really see what&#8217;s not to like about Young, unless teams think he actually is as old as he looks.\u00a0 This guy averaged almost 19 points a game over the past two seasons for one of the premier programs in college basketball, and they don&#8217;t exactly have a run and gun offensive style at Pitt.\u00a0 He&#8217;s\u00a0got nice size for a SF, he can shoot it, he&#8217;s a high-flying dunker, and he&#8217;s a great character guy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>37th Overall Pick:\u00a0 Dejuan Blair <\/strong><em>(Spurs):\u00a0 <\/em>With Young&#8217;s former teammate, I do see what&#8217;s not to like.\u00a0 He&#8217;s short for a\u00a0post player and there are questions about his knees after surgeries in high school.\u00a0 Those are both legitimate concerns.\u00a0 But this guy stepped\u00a0into the college game two years ago and was immediately\u00a0dominant.\u00a0 He will not be\u00a0a dominant\u00a0NBA player, but I see no reason\u00a0why he can&#8217;t be a very solid contributor and a great value in the 2nd Round.\u00a0 Concerns about his height\u00a0should be tempered by the way he owned Hasheem Thabeet last season, and his knees may be questionable, but they never forced him\u00a0to miss any time in his two years at Pitt.\u00a0 San Antonio is probably a great place for him to end up.\u00a0 He makes much more sense on a good team than a bad one.<\/p>\n<p><strong>50th Overall Pick:\u00a0 Goran Suton<\/strong><em>\u00a0(Jazz):\u00a0 <\/em>It&#8217;s always shocking to see the Jazz go for a white guy, isn&#8217;t it?\u00a0 I guess if it wasn&#8217;t for Michigan State&#8217;s run to the title game in the spring, Suton wouldn&#8217;t even have been drafted.\u00a0\u00a0Still, I\u00a0must have been\u00a0more impressed by his performance in the tournament than NBA scouts were.\u00a0 I see Suton as a valuable bench player in the NBA, and that&#8217;s a great\u00a0value this late in the\u00a0draft.\u00a0 He&#8217;s an excellent rebounder and can consistently knock down\u00a0jump shots.\u00a0 That combination makes you a nice player to bring off the bench.\u00a0 Jerry Sloan should put Suton to good use.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ll be the first to admit that I am no NBA draft guru.\u00a0 First of all, my first-hand knowledge of players is basically limited to guys that have played big-time college basketball.\u00a0 Also, I&#8217;ve been notoriously inaccurate in projecting which &hellip;
