{"id":3614,"date":"2012-12-13T13:11:09","date_gmt":"2012-12-13T17:11:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.broadstreetbelievers.com\/?p=3614"},"modified":"2012-12-14T09:06:11","modified_gmt":"2012-12-14T13:06:11","slug":"biggest-surprises-of-the-college-hoops-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/broadstreetbelievers.com\/?p=3614","title":{"rendered":"Biggest Surprises of the College Hoops Season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is a really slow week for on-court action, so it seems like a good time for some a quick emotionless, objective, quantitative analysis of teams that have surprised in the first month of the college hoops season.\u00a0 Based strictly on the KenPom rankings today compared to his preseason rankings, here are the biggest surprises (rankings represent <a href=\"http:\/\/kenpom.com\/\">KenPom&#8217;s rankings for today<\/a>\u00a0versus his rankings posted on 11\/9 before the first games were played and indicate the sheer numerical difference between the two rankings.)<\/p>\n<h2>10 Most Improved College Basketball Teams<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Illinois-Chicago<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong>currently\u00a0#122 from preseason #289<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Canisius<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong>#146 from #276<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Utah<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong>#194 from #309<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Eastern Kentucky<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span>#185 from #292<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Gardner-Webb<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span>#145 from #240<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Pepperdine<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n#208 from #299<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>San Francisco<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span>#111 from #197<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Boston U.<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n#132 from #213<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Bradley<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n#154 from #234<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Maryland\/Wyoming<\/strong><\/span> (tie)<br \/>\nMD: #56 from #135<br \/>\nWY: #59 from #138<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Obviously, because I simply used the discrete change in rankings, this list is somewhat biased towards those teams that were expected to be really bad and have proven barely\u00a0mediocre.\u00a0 That shows that the presence of Maryland and Wyoming in the #10 spot\u00a0to be\u00a0pretty\u00a0impressive for those two teams and the starts they have had.\u00a0 Teams like<strong> Charlotte, Middle Tennessee, North Dakota State<\/strong>, and <strong>Illinois State<\/strong> all went from &#8220;thought-to-be-decent&#8221; to &#8220;really good.&#8221;\u00a0 And, <strong>Ole Miss<\/strong>, who has improved from #74 in the preseason all the way to #21 now probably has seen the most subjectively impressive rise in their ranking.<\/p>\n<h2>10 Most Disappointing College Basketball Teams<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Missouri State<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span>currently #244 from preseason #123<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Penn State<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span>#167 from #67<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Old Dominion<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span>#226 from #132<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Wisconsin-Milwaukee<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span>#291 from #200<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Lamar<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n#312 from #226<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Marist<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n#253 from #169<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Delaware State<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span>#288 from #205<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Mercer<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n#158 from #82<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Furman<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n#314 from #258<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>IUPUI<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n#300 from #229<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The opposite bias holds here in that this list is catered more towards teams that were thought to be mediocre, but have been pretty bad.\u00a0 Teams like <strong>Rice, Southern Utah<\/strong>, and <strong>Presbyterian<\/strong> are all <em>really <\/em>bad, when they were only considered to be slightly bad.\u00a0 And, then there are teams like <strong>South Dakota State, Drexel, Vanderbilt, Marshall<\/strong>, and <strong>UMass<\/strong>, who all were supposed to be pretty good, but have all shown to be just mediocre thus far.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It is a really slow week for on-court action, so it seems like a good time for some a quick emotionless, objective, quantitative analysis of teams that have surprised in the first month of the college hoops season.\u00a0 Based strictly &hellip;
