\"schneider\"The Phillies signed catcher Brian Schneider<\/a> today to a 2 year\/$2.75 million deal,\u00a0to backup Carlos Ruiz.\u00a0 I said here on the site a few weeks ago that Schneider was probably my top choice for a backup catcher, so this is a nice signing by Ruben Amaro.<\/p>\n

Schneider is pretty much exactly what you want in a backup catcher.\u00a0 He’s a veteran who has many years as a full-time catcher under his belt.\u00a0 He’s solid defensively and bats left-handed.\u00a0 As an added nice benefit, he’s spent his entire career in the NL East with the Expos\/Nationals and the Mets, so he has good knowledge of how to pitch to a lot of the players in the division.\u00a0 He’s also\u00a0from the Philly area, as he played high school ball in the Lehigh Valley.\u00a0 And, finally,\u00a0he seems to be a good all-around guy and good teammate.\u00a0 He should be a nice addition in the clubhouse, a nice option for when Ruiz needs a day off, and a nice option if Ruiz goes down with an injury at some point.\u00a0 It’s a signing that makes a lot of sense.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Also, last week the Phils signed Juan Castro<\/a> to replace Eric Bruntlett as the team’s utility man.\u00a0 I don’t have as much to say about this signing because I don’t know a whole lot about Castro, but I do think he’ll probably be an upgrade over Bruntlett.\u00a0 I never liked the idea of Bruntlett as our backup middle infielder, because I just never trusted him at shortstop.\u00a0 Castro should be able to give solid defense at the spot if J-Roll were to go down for any period of time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
