{"id":75,"date":"2008-01-04T12:56:01","date_gmt":"2008-01-04T17:56:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.broadstreetbelievers.com\/?p=75"},"modified":"2008-01-04T13:19:21","modified_gmt":"2008-01-04T18:19:21","slug":"tell-me-im-crazy-part-iii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/broadstreetbelievers.com\/?p=75","title":{"rendered":"Tell Me I&#8217;m Crazy (Part III)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It should not be the &#8220;Big 6&#8221; in college basketball because the Atlantic 10 is <em>clearly<\/em> a major conference.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FACT:<\/strong>\u00a0 There are\u00a07 programs in Division 1 basketball history that have 1,600 wins.\u00a0 Here are the conferences that those seven teams represent:<br \/>\n-ACC (2)<br \/>\n-Big East (2)<br \/>\n-SEC<br \/>\n-Big XII<br \/>\n-Atlantic 10<\/p>\n<p><strong>FACT:\u00a0 <\/strong>Since 1995-96, only\u00a0two conferences in the nation has produced at least THREE national players of the year:\u00a0 The ACC and the Atlantic 10.\u00a0 In fact, the Big East, Big Ten, Pac 10, and SEC have all combined for ZERO over that stretch&#8211;a period of time when the A-10 has had three!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" align=\"middle\" width=\"250\" src=\"http:\/\/www.noramsports.com\/news\/College\/Basketball\/Reports\/Photo\/JNelson1.jpg\" height=\"266\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" width=\"250\" src=\"http:\/\/umasshoops.com\/games\/1994-95\/1210maryland\/camby_blocks_booth.jpg\" height=\"320\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Yes, all that is history, but what about today?<br \/>\n<strong>FACTS:<br \/>\n<\/strong>-Dayton is ranked #20 in the current AP poll.\u00a0 The Flyers\u00a0are 12-1, including a 5-point road win at then-ranked #11 Louisville and a 80-55 shellacking of #6 Pittsburgh.<br \/>\n-Rhode Island is ranked #24 in the current AP poll.\u00a0 The Rams are 14-1, including a 17-point home win over Providence and road wins over UAB and Syracuse.<br \/>\n-Xavier is unranked, but many believe is the best team in the conference.\u00a0 They are 10-3, with their only losses coming at Miami (OH), at Arizona State and a neutral site loss against #12 Tennessee.\u00a0 They also can boast a 15-point win over #8 Indiana.<br \/>\n-UMass is 11-2.\u00a0 Duquesne is 10-3.\u00a0 And, Charlotte, St. Louis, St. Joe&#8217;s and\u00a0Richmond are all teams with good programs and solid 2007-08 teams.\u00a0 Temple and George Washington may be down, but still very dangerous.\u00a0 Fordham is improving.\u00a0 LaSalle and St. Bonaventure are no longer complete doormats.\u00a0 This league is solid from top to bottom.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" align=\"left\" width=\"195\" src=\"http:\/\/sports.espn.go.com\/media\/ncb\/2003\/0208\/photo\/a_west_i.jpg\" height=\"262\" \/>Look, I will not dare make the claim that the A-10 is any better than the 7th best conference in the country.\u00a0 My only big issue is where you draw the line between &#8220;major&#8221; and &#8220;mid-major.&#8221;\u00a0 Maybe it belongs in its own category because it does not really hold up to any of the Big 6, but with multiple bids nearly every year, 3 national POYs in the last\u00a011 seasons (more than any other conference)\u00a0and solid programs top to bottom, this conference is not the MAC, it is not the Horizon and it is not even the heralded Missouri Valley or Colonial Conferences.\u00a0 Though, I am a huge proponent of the &#8220;little guys&#8221; in college hoops, the A-10 is, in my opinion, clearly MUCH closer to the #6 conference than the #8 conference, and should, therefore, not be considered &#8220;mid-major.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tell me I&#8217;m crazy&#8230;<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It should not be the &#8220;Big 6&#8221; in college basketball because the Atlantic 10 is clearly a major conference.
