It’s official, I’m bitter.\u00a0 I pride myself on not being a typical Philly fan.\u00a0 As the name of this site suggests, I’m optimistic about my teams.\u00a0 I try not to be unrealistic, but I generally expect good things.\u00a0 I like to like<\/em> my teams and root for<\/em> the players on those teams, not against them (a novel concept,\u00a0I know).\u00a0 I’ve always been this way\u00a0and I’m pretty sure I always will be.\u00a0<\/p>\n

I became old enough to actually follow sports around 1988, which means I’ve hit the unofficial 20-year mark as a Philly sports fan.\u00a0 As everyone knows, I’ve seen a lot of losing, and I’ve seen zero championships.\u00a0 There are silver linings to the situation.\u00a0\u00a0Die-hard Philly fans carry a badge of honor\u00a0at this point.\u00a0 You don’t come across any fake fans with a Phillies\u00a0hat on.\u00a0 There’s a lot to be said for enjoying\u00a0the journey and not just the destination.<\/p>\n

All that being said, I realized this afternoon one of the negative effects of 20 years without a champion: I’m now\u00a0a bitter \"harrison\"sports fan.\u00a0 I came across a poll on ESPN.com that asked “What Super Bowl matchup do you want to see?”.\u00a0 I picked the Chargers-Packers and was a little surprised to see the vast majority of fans want to see the Patriots win on Sunday.\u00a0 Is everyone else not as bitter as me?\u00a0 The average\u00a0fan is\u00a0rooting for a team to\u00a0win\u00a0its fourth Super Bowl in the last\u00a0seven years?\u00a0 Most people will be disappointed to\u00a0see the perfect, almighty, best-team-in-history Pats fall flat on their faces in the AFC title game?\u00a0 Not me!<\/p>\n

Honestly, I don’t want\u00a0to see anyone get too much of something that I haven’t gotten any\u00a0of.\u00a0 I know that’s a\u00a0bit selfish, but not totally.\u00a0 Even though the\u00a0 Brett\u00a0Favre coverage would get really annoying, I would\u00a0be really happy for the fans in Wisconsin\u00a0if they got another Super Bowl win.\u00a0 I had no problem at all with the Colts and Steelers winning championships the last two years, because those fans\u00a0deserved it.\u00a0 What does Boston deserve at this point?\u00a0 I think\u00a0something resembling the past\u00a020 years in Philadelphia\u00a0might be a good start.\u00a0 So, on Sunday, I’ll be hoping Phil\u00a0Rivers and Ladainian Tomlinson are healthy,\u00a0rooting for every call to go San Diego’s way, and praying that every tipped\u00a0Tom Brady pass drops softly into the arms of a Charger defender.\u00a0 This is life as a bitter sports fan.\u00a0 It’s not that bad.\u00a0 I just wish they weren’t\u00a0so damn good.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
