First of all, I do not understand why the NBA and the NFL only give one MVP, instead of MVPs for each league, but that’s not the issue here.
In my mind, I think it’s a good race, but not really that close. I think LeBron James is the MVP, period. You take James off of the Cavs and they are one of the worst teams in the NBA. If you took Kobe off of the Lakers, they still have an outside shot at the playoffs. Same with Nash in Phoenix or even Chris Paul (who I think is #2) in New Orleans. But, in the end, the quality of the Cleveland Cavaliers has more to do with one man than the quality of any other team in the league–and that’s what I think of when I think of “valuable.”
Agreed. I also want to say, as much as I really like Steve Nash and love watching him play, I’m glad we’re past the “Nash MVP” era. When you watch LeBron or Kobe, they’re both on a level that is just really amazing. As far as on-the-court play goes (not counting leadership, intangibles, etc.) Kobe is right on par with Michael Jordan right now, and LeBron will be there VERY soon. Pretty fun to watch. Also, I watched some the Hornets game last night and just as I was talking about how good Chris Paul is, he made a ridiculous jaw-dropping play: it was like a 3 on 2 break, right at the free-throw line he went by a guy with a behind the back dribble from his right hand to his left, than in one motion lobbed the ball up with his left hand for an alley-oop to Tyson Chandler. It was amazing.
I’m going to go the other way and say Kobe even though I like LeBron better. I agree with much of what you guys said, especially that the quality of the Cleveland Cavaliers has more to do with one man than the quality of any other team in the league, but Kobe has better stats in the Western Conference. And that’s really what it comes down to for me. Kobe is doing it against real NBA teams while LeBron gets to drop 50 on the Knicks.
I’ve changed my mind. Chris Paul is the MVP hands down.
