CTC Day 9 Preview

And, now we’re really moving, as most conferences are getting set up for the second best weekend in sports (not coincidentally a week before the BEST weekend in sports).  There are quadruple-headers all over the country, many of which are with the nation’s best teams.  Let’s get right to it.

NEC CHAMPIONSHIP:
In a tournament that started with the quarterfinals last Thursday and then continued with the semifinals on Sunday, the finals are Wednesday night on the campus of Robert Morris College.  Stri and Bry are going for the perfect bracket tonight.

  • #2 Mount St. Mary’s at #1 Robert Morris.  In a conference that has seen the top two teams make it to the finals, all on their home courts, they have done so in much different ways.  Robert Morris has cruised to the finals, making it look easy, including a 27-point thrashing of Quinnipiac on Sunday in the semis.  While, on the other hand, MSM won a comeback win over Wagner in the quarters, and then a hard-fought back-and-forth win over Sacred Heart in the semis.  But, regardless, they are both here and both have a shot to go to the Dance.  Alexi and Waters both have MSM winning the title.  Bry, Ina, Doogan, J, and Stri all have RMC.  If the Colonials win, Bry and Stri have completed perfect brackets and will win this conference.  If MSM wins, then Alexi will have this crown by himself.

BIG SKY CHAMPIONSHIP:
After last night’s surprising semifinal double-header, the Big Sky is thrown for a loop.  The leader, right now, has TWELVE points, and there is a chance that that is the winning score here.

  • #2 Portland State vs. #6 Montana State.  Montana St., who is destined for the play-in game in Dayton if they win tonight, has pulled off back-to-back upsets after sneaking into the tournament.  If they win tonight, Bry and J will share the Big Sky crown with 12 points.  If Portland St. wins, J (the only one with PSU to win this tourney) will take the crown.

CTC Day 8 Recap: Doogan Wins the Day, Ina Takes the Lead

The calm before the storm has come and gone, and we’re about to be hit by the storm.  Doogan wins his first day of the 2009 CTC.  Ina was right behind, giving her the overall lead.

DAY 8 SCORES:
Doogan-83
Ina-80
Lynch-68
Bry-53
J-46
Stri-46
Alexi-40
Waters-29

OVERALL LEADERBOARD (points behind leading score of 744):
Ina-0
Bry-69
Alexi-72
J-146
Stri-164
Lynch-180
Waters-203
Doogan-235

BIG EAST OPENING ROUND:
The first ever opening round in a conference tournament saw a couple upsets and took a couple of our quarterfinalists with them.

  • #16 DePaul 67 – #9 Cincinnati 57.  In the biggest upset of the day, and one of the biggest of the CTC, the 0-18 DePaul Blue Demons popped the bubble of Cincinnati.  No one had DePaul winning this game, but it hurt J and Alexi more, as they had Cincy beating Providence in the next round.
  • #10 Notre Dame 61 – #15 Rutgers 50.  The Fightin’ Irish keep their slim at-large hopes alive, as they knocked off #15 Rutgers.  Only Waters had Rutgers in this one.  Lynch and Bry have ND winning again on Wednesday, so that stays alive for them.
  • #11 Seton Hall 68 – #14 South Florida 54.  The Pirates of Seton Hall kept their season alive with a 14-point win over USF last night.  Bry and Lynch missed on the upset pick.  Waters (with more Jersey pride) has Seton Hall winning again today against #6 Syracuse.
  • #13 St. John’s 64 – #12 Georgetown 59.  And thus ends the season of one of the most disappointing teams in the nation.  St. John’s, a feisty young team, will now move on to face a battered and reeling Marquette team in the second round–don’t count them out.  Doogan and Lynch both nailed this upset pick.  Bry and Alexi both lost G’town, which they had winning again today.

CTC Day 8 Preview

And, so it begins.  The great second week of the CTC begins today, with a couple holdovers from Week One.

BIG EAST OPENING ROUND:
In this new, awesome Big East tournament structure, there is a first round and a second round before the quarterfinals.  There are THREE STRAIGHT DAYS with quadruple-headers, then the semifinals and finals.  Awesome; madness; awesome!  Doogan is trying to defend his 2008 CTC Big East crown (170 points), while J will try for a better showing this year than his 40 points of a year ago.  There are a TON of points up for grabs with all of these high seeds and extra rounds, so this year’s Big East could go a long way in crowning the overall champion.  Not to mention all the great basketball.  There are three teams with a chance at a #1 seed in the Big Dance.  There are several bubble teams, including three playing in this first day.  Awesome.

  • #9 Cincinnati (8-10) vs. #16 DePaul (0-18).  The Blue Demons lost all 18 conference games this year and open against a bubblicious team in Cincinnati.  The winner moves on the second round against #8 Providence.  No one has Cincinnati losing this game, and a couple (J and Alexi) have the Bearcats winning tomorrow against Friars.
  • #10 Notre Dame (8-10) vs. #15 Rutgers (2-16).  Another bubble team, the Fightin’ Irish, take on Rutgers tonight in the late game at MSG.  Rutgers struggled all year, but are a dangerous team.  ND still has an outside shot at an at-large, but it will take at least two wins in this tournament–maybe more.  The winner gets #7 West Virginia in the second round.  Waters was the only one (Jersey pride, maybe?) to take the Scarlet Knights in this one.  Bry and Lynch both have Notre Dame winning again over the Mountaineers.
  • #11 Seton Hall (7-11) vs. #14 South Florida (4-14).  Not a bad rebuilding season for the Pirates in ridiculously tough conference, but they still finished 11th in the conference.  USF just has not been able to make a good transition, basketball-wise, to the Big East, and finished 14th this season.  The winner of this game moves on to face #6 Syracuse Wednesday night.  Bry and Lynch both have USF in the upset.  Everyone else has Seton Hall.  No one has either team beating the ‘Cuse in the second round.
  • #12 Georgetown (7-11) vs. #13 St. John’s (6-12).  Another team that is on the very outside of the bubble is the 12th-place team in the great Big East.  In the beginning of the season, it looked like the Hoyas might not even be playing on the second day of the tournament, let alone the first, but now they are in a lot of trouble, with one last chance.  The Johnnies, on the other hand, are happy to be here, after missing the Big East tournament completely the past couple of years.  But, they are here, and just as alive as anyone else.  Doogan and Lynch are the only two to take St. John’s.  Bry and Alexi believe in Georgetown, as they have the Hoyas knocking off #5 Marquette in the second round.

HORIZON LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP:
After an opening round on campus sites and the quarter- and semifinal rounds on Butler’s campus, the championship is tonight, again, at Butler.  Bubble teams all over the country are rooting hard for Butler tonight, so that they don’t fall into the at-large field.

  • #3 Cleveland State at #1 Butler.  The Bulldogs, the class of this conference year in and year out, are a lock for the NCAA tournament, but they can save a bubble team by making it official tonight at home against Cleveland St.  All 8 of us have Butler winning this tournament, so there are no points up for grabs here, and Bry is going to win his 3rd conference of the year.

SUMMIT LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP:
After two interesting and exciting rounds in the Summit League, the finals are tonight.

  • #1 North Dakota State vs. #3 Oakland.  N.D. State is the top seed and regular season champ, but they have looked a lot impressive than #3 Oakland through the first two rounds of this tournament.  No matter what happens tonight, there is going to be a tie for the SL title this year.  If Oakland wins, J and Alexi will share the title.  If N.D. State wins, Ina, Doogan and Stri will all share the crown.  The other three (Bry, Lynch, and Waters) have someone who is already been eliminated winning the title tonight.

MAC OPENING ROUND:
An interesting MAC season’s climax begins tonight with the opening round of the conference tournament.  The seedings are interesting because of the divisional breakdown in the MAC, but the tournament should be exciting.  Doogan is the defending CTC MAC champion, having a perfect bracket except one opening round game–collecting 116 points.  Bry only had 44 from the MAC last year, losing this conference.

  • #5 Akron (10-6) vs. #12 Toledo (5-11).  The Zips take on the Rockets tonight in the MAC opening round.  The Rockets struggled, while the Zips probably earned a bye, but did not get it.  Only Lynch took the shot at a 14 point (times 3) upset pick today with Toledo.  Everyone else has Akron.  Bry, Ina, and Alexi have Akron winning again tomorrow against #4 Miami (OH).
  • #6 Kent State (10-6) vs. #11 Northern Illinois (5-11).  The Golden Flashes of Kent St. is another team that could have gotten a bye, but instead have to play on opening day.  N. Illinois (who has a whatifsports national championship banner hanging from the rafters) struggled in actual basketball this year.  Only Doogan took UNI in the big upset.  Interestingly, both Bry and Alexi have Kent St. going all the way to the finals–Alexi has them winning it.
  • #7 Central Michigan (7-9) vs. #10 Eastern Michigan (6-10).  The battle of directional Michigans tonight, where the winner will be rewarded with a quarterfinal date against #2 Ball St.  Half of us (J, Doogan, Alexi, and Waters) all have E. Michigan in the upset.  Alexi and Doogan both have them going all the way to the semis.  Ina and Bry both have C. Michigan going to the semis, so this is a pretty important 7-10 game.
  • #8 Western Michigan (7-9) vs. #9 Ohio (7-9).  In a battle of two very different 7-9 teams, having played different schedules.  Bry, J, Doogan, Waters, and Lynch all took Ohio in the mild upset.  J even has them knocking off #1 Bowling Green in a huge upset in the quarters.

BIG SKY SEMIFINALS:
The Big Sky played their two quarterfinal games on Saturday and now they have the semis tonight and the finals tomorrow on the campus of the top seed, Webert St.  The tournament finally welcomes the top two seeds to the fray.

  • #4 Idaho State at #1 Weber State (15-1).  The top seed in the Big Sky gets to host the semis and finals, so Weber St., who only lost one conference game all year, gets Idaho St., who is coming off a 7-point win over N. Colorado on Saturday.  Everyone has Weber St. winning this game, and everyone except J and Waters (who is out with Montana) have them winning this title.
  • #2 Portland State (11-5) vs. #6 Montana State.  Montana St. is coming off a thrilling two-point win over their arch rivals and now they get rewarded with a semifinal game against #2 Portland St.  Stri and Waters both had eliminated Montana winning this game.  Everyone else has Portland St.  J is the only one with the Seawolves winning this tournament.

WAC OPENING ROUND:
One game in the WAC tonight tips off this conference’s tournament.  Unfortunately, it is scheduled to start at 10:30 tonight, not midnight, for old time’s sake.  I miss the “Midnight Snack in the WAC.”

  • #8 Hawaii (5-11) vs. #9 Fresno State (3-13).  A game between the worst two teams in the conference tonight, to see who gets to play #1 Utah St. tomorrow.  Bry, Ina, and Alexi all picked Fresno St. in the mild upset.  No one has either of these teams beating Utah St. tomorrow.

MEAC OPENING ROUND:
The MEAC splits up both the opening round and the quarterfinals, as two of the three opening round games take place tonight in Winston-Salem.  Last year Alexi (38 points) edged Bry (34 points) for the MEAC title.  J and Doogan both struggled, scoring 16 each.

  • #7 Hampton (8-8) vs. #10 Delaware State (6-10).  The winner of this opener will get #2 S.C. State on Thursday night in the quarters.  Doogan, Waters, and Lynch all took Delaware St. in the upset.  Alexi and J both have Hampton beating S.C. State and going to the semis.  Alexi even has them in the finals.
  • #8 Florida A&M (6-10) vs. #9 Howard (6-10).  The 8-9 game will determine the quarterfinal opponent of top-seeded Morgan St.  Bry, Doogan, Alexi, Waters, and Lynch all have Howard in the mild upset.  No one has either of them beating Morgan on Thursday.

CTC Day 7 Recap: Huge Day for Ina Puts Her Back in the Lead By Her Lonesome

On a relatively quiet day, Ina still gained at least 30 point of everyone else.  Alexi beat Bry by 10, putting him into second by himself.  Stri loses a day for the first time this year.  Seven days through and J has neither won a day or lost one.  And, as Stri said the other day, this is the closest CTC–from top to bottom–that we have had in a long time.  And, now that the big tourneys start, things should juggle, considering getting the champ of a major conference is 90 points plus 5x upset points.

DAY 7 SCORES:
Ina-120
Alexi-90
J-90
Lynch-84
Bry-80
Waters-80
Doogan-74
Stri-66

OVERALL (points behind leader, with 662):
Ina-0
Alexi-30
Bry-40
J-110
Stri-128
Waters-138
Lynch-166

COLONIAL CHAMPIONSHIP:
One of the better tournaments ended Monday night with the re-emergence of a great player.  Ina takes her first 2009 CTC conference title with a win.  Lynch loses his 3rd, though I have respect for sticking with his alma mater.

  • #1 VCU 71 – #2 George Mason 50.  In a disappiontingly lopsided final, VCU’s star Eric Maynor is back on the big scene.  Bry and Ina both correctly got the champ here.  Waters, Alexi, and J missed out on their champ here.

FINAL COLONIAL SCORES:
Ina-150
Bry-126
Alexi-114 (defending champ)
J-84
Waters-84
Stri-72
Doogan-48
Lynch-18

CTC Day 7 Preview

The calm after AND before the storm, as there are only a couple of games tonight.  So, take a breath, think about the first week and get ready for a big second week, starting tomorrow with the unprecedented Tuesday quadruple-header in the Big East, among others.  But, there are a couple important games tonight.

COLONIAL CHAMPIONSHIP:
A great tournament with upsets and surprises, but it ends with the top two seeds in the title game.

  • #1 VCU vs. #2 George Mason.  A game to which I am very much looking forward, pitting two of the better mid-major teams with all on the line.  This is basically a well-warranted round of 128 NCAA tournament game.  Bry and Ina have VCU.  Waters, Alexi, and J have George Mason.  Doogan, Stri, and Lynch have either ODU or UDel, who didn’t make it.  If Mason wins tonight, Alexi defends his Colonial title.  If VCU wins, Ina will take the crown away.

WEST COAST CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP:
In the much-anticipated championship of the WCC tonight, we got what we all wanted (and predicted), as #1 Gonzaga takes on #2 St. Mary’s.

  • #1 Gonzaga vs. #2 St. Mary’s.  All 8 of us picked Gonzaga to face St. Mary’s, while 7 of us picked the ‘Zags to win it.  The only dissenting opinion comes from Bry, who believes in Patty Mills and the Gaels need for the auto bid, in taking SMC to win.  If Gonzaga wins tonight, Ina takes the WCC title.  If St. Mary’s wins, obviously, Bry would win, as the only one to have taken them.

Day 6 Recap: A Three-Way Tie for the Lead as Week One Ends

And thus ends Week One of the 2009 CTC and three of us have jumped out ahead of the pack, but not from each other.  Bry wins his second straight day and 3rd of the 6.  Doogan loses his 3rd fay of the 6.  BUt, all in all, it was very close today.

DAY 6:
Bry-166
J-162
Ina-160
Waters-156
Stri-152
Alexi-136
Lynch-120
Doogan-92

OVERALL (points behind leader with 542):
Ina-0
Alexi-0
Bry-0
Stri-74
J-80
Waters-94
Lynch-130
Doogan-190

MISSOURI VALLEY CHAMPIONSHIP:
In an absolutely thrilling Valley championship (that was cut off in overtime by CBS…awful), the Illinois St. Redbirds have a second straight long offseason to deal with.  Stri finishes off his first 2009 conference title, with a win in The Valley.

  • #1 Northern Iowa 60 – #3 Illinois State 57 (OT).  Leading for much of the first half, N. Iowa needed a big defensive stop to send the game to OT and then another big stop to win it in the overtime session, ad they clinch their first NCAA bid since 2004.  Despite being the top seed, no one took UNI to win this tournament.

MISSOURI VALLEY FINAL SCORE:
Stri-84
Ina-78
Alexi-78
Lynch-66
Bry-54
Waters-42
J-30
Doogan-30

COLONIAL SEMIFINALS:
The hard-fought Colonial tournament ends with the top two teams still standing.  Ina, J, and Waters picked the two finalists correctly.

  • #1 VCU 61 – #4 Old Dominion 53.  This game was back-and-forth throughout, but in the end only one team had Eric Maynor, and that team is still standing after the war.  ODU did look like they could have won this game, if not for an injury to their best player, Gerald Lee, and foul trouble for the second-best player, Ben Finney.  But, the Rams came through.  Alexi, Doogan, and Stri all just missed what would have been a big upset pick, with ODU.  Stri and Doogan had them winning this tournament.  Bry and Ina kept their champ alive.
  • #2 George Mason 56 – #11 Towson 48.  It looked, for a while, that Towson was going to pull off another HUGE upset, but Mason was just too tough down the stretch.  Doogan, Lynch, and Bry failed to correctly predict Mason reaching the finals.  J, Alexi, and Waters kept their champ alive.

WEST COAST CONFERENCE SEMIFINALS:
Well, it looks like we got what we wanted in the WCC, as the top two seeds are going to the finals. Everyone correctly predicted this finals matchup. Ina remains perfect in the WCC.

  • #1 Gonzaga 94 – #4 Santa Clara 59.  The top-seed flexed their muscles and hammered Santa Clara to advance to the finals on Monday night.  Everyone had Gonzaga.  Only Bry does not have them winning the tournament.
  • #2 St. Mary’s 71 – #3 Portland 61.  Patty Mills is back, playing 35 minutes off the bench.  He only shot 3-12 from the floor for 12 points, but his presence is clearly important to the Gaels.  Everyone had this correct.  Bry kept his title team alive.

AMERICA EAST SEMIFINALS:
The top-seed was in action and then there was the other semifinal, where either the #6 or #7 team was going to advance to the finals.  Bry and Lynch both correctly predicted the finals matchup, even though it is an unexpected result.

  • #1 Binghamton 72 – #4 New Hampshire 67.  In a game that was closer than it was expected to be, the top seeded Binghamton team moved on to host the title game, with a big win in Albany.  Doogan missed–barely–on this big upset pick.  J got this wrong, having picked Stony Brook to be here.  The other 6 got this right.  Bry and Ina kept their champs alive.
  • #6 UMBC 64 – #7 Albany 58.  What a weekend for Bry’s alma maters.  Franklin & Marshall won two NCAA D-III tournament games to advance to the Sweet 16, and UMBC won two A-East tournament games, to advance to the conference tournament championship.  Lynch and Bry both had the Retrievers in the finals.  Lynch has them winning it all.

SoCON SEMIFINALS:
The biggest shock of the CTC so far definitely happened in the SoCon yesterday.  In fact, this whole tournament has been shocking–if you judge by the success of the CTC contestants.  We, as a group, were only 3-for-16 in semifinal predictions in the SoCon.  No one got both right.

  • #3S College of Charleston 59 – #1S Davidson 52.  And, thus ends the junior season for Stephen Curry (except for the NIT), as CofC knocks off the kings of the SoCon.  Stri actually CALLED this, with the best pick of the CTC so far.  Everyone else had Davidson.
  • #1N Chattanooga 81 – #3N Samford 70.  Chattanooga, playing in their hometown, advances to the finals to take on CofC on Monday night.  Lynch and Waters both correctly predicted this result, and Lynch (because of the losses by Davidson and The Citadel) is the only one with a champion pick remaining in this tournament.

MAAC SEMIFINALS:
The top two seeds advance to the MAAC final–which should be really, really good, actually.  We, as a group, went 15-for-16 in picking semifinal games in the MAAC.  Only Alexi got one wrong, in picking against #2 Niagara.

  • #1 Siena 80 – #5 Fairfield 65.  Another impressive preformance by #1 Siena, as they took out FU.  Everyone had Siena winning this game.  4 of us (Bry, Waters, Alexi, and J) kept their champion alive.
  • #2 Niagara 93 – #3 Rider 89 (2 OTs).  Absolute, complete MADNESS!  Rider had this game apparently won in regulation, but Niagara came back, got within three, when Tyrone Lewis banked in a 30-footer with :01.7 seconds left to tie the game.  MADNESS!  Then, Niagara took this momentum into the first OT and opened up a 6-point lead with 1:10 to go, Rider came storming back, including a Ryan Thompson lay-up to tie the game and send it to a second OT. MADNESS!!  Finally, Bilal Benn, of Niagara, hit a shot to put them up two in the waning seconds of the 2nd OT, then stole the ball with :02 seconds left, in Rider’s possession, attempting to send it to a third OT.  MADNESS!!!  Everyone had Niagara, except Alex, who just missed a valuable upset.  Ina, Lynch, Stri, and Doogan all kept their champ alive…barely.

PATRIOT LEAGUE SEMIFINALS:
Another conference tournament that took a circuitous path to get to the expected result in the finals.  Bry, Ina, and Alexi correctly predicted the PL final.

  • #1 American 61 – #4 Army 60.  Army almost pulled off a HUGE upset.  But Brian Gilmore hit one of two free throws to break a 60-60 tie with :03.6 seconds left…madness!  An Army half-court shot fell just short, and the Eagles move on to host the finals next week.  Waters just missed a big upset pick.  Everyone else got AU correct, and kept their title pick alive.
  • #2 Holy Cross 61 – #6 Colgate.  The biggest upset of the quarterfinals was Colgate over #3 Navy in OT, but they could not do anything against #2 Holy Cross.  No one had Colgate in the finals, but only Bry, Ina, Alexi, and Waters had Holy Cross there.  Waters has Holy Cross winning it all–the only non-American pick in this conference.

NEC SEMIFINALS:
Another tournament where the top two seeds won semifinal games, setting up a nice championship game.  Bry, J, Stri, and Alexi correctly predicted the title game in the NEC.

  • #1 Robert Morris 75 – #5 Quinnipiac 48.  RMC smashed 5th-seeded Quinnipiac on Sunday and advanced to host the NEC finals on Wednesday.  Waters and Lynch both had Q; everyone else had RMC–and all of whom, but Alexi, had RMC winning this tournament.
  • #2 Mount St. Mary’s 68 – #3 Sacred Heart 63In a back-and-forth tilt, MSM moves on to face RMC in the finals of the NEC.  Ina and Doogan missed the SH upset pick; everyone else had MSM in the finals.

SUN BELT QUARTERFINALS:
A quadruple-header in the Sun Belt sets up a nice Final Four in Hot Springs, AR.  J nailed all four of the semifinalists.  Lynch only got one.

  • #1 Western Kentucky 66 – #9 Florida-International 48.  An easy opening win for the Hilltoppers over FIU.  Everyone had WKU winning this game.  Ina, Doogan, and Lynch kept their champion alive.
  • #2 Arkansas-Little Rock 58 – #7 Denver 55.  Denver was up as many as 14 points in the second half and up 55-52 with two minutes left in the game.  But, John Fowler hit back-to-back threes to win it for UALR, saving Bry and J’s Sun Belt champ.  Lynch lost the most here, as he predicted the Denver upset, which would have given him 10 upset points.
  • #6 South Alabama 78 – #3 Troy 75.  In one of the more important upsets to the CTC, the USA Jaguars knocked off #3 Troy and advance to the semis to take on UALR.  Everyone had Troy in this game except Bry and J, who both hit this upset.  Stri, Alexi, and Waters all lost their Sun Belt champion.  Lynch, Ina, and Doogan lost a finalist.
  • #4 North Texas 88 – #5 Middle Tennessee State 79.  The Mean Green gets a nice quarterfinal victory to advance to the semis on Tuesday against W. Kentucky.  Bry missed the MTSU pick, while Lynch, Doogan, and Waters all failed to score points here with picks that have already been eliminated.  This win for the Mean Green keeps a pretty big upset pick of Stri’s to come through.

SUMMIT LEAGUE QUARTERFINALS:
The second half of the quarters concluded Sunday night in the Summit League.  Coming off the upset of #2 Oral Roberts, the bottom of the Summit League is wide open.  There were 32 quarterfinal predictions in the CTC and not one of them was an upset pick.  Everyone had the top 4 seeds in the semis, so everyone went 2-for-2 in the quarters.  There are plenty of differences in the later rounds, though.

  • #3 Oakland 75 – #6 IPFW 62.  A popular pick in the Summit League, Oakland moves on to the semis, and with ORU out, it’s wide open for Oakland to score big points for a couple CTC contestants.  Everyone had this pick correct, and everyone except Bry and Waters have Oakland in the finals.  Alexi and J have them winning this tournamet.
  • #5 Southern Utah 53 – #4 IUPUI.  The great Ron Hunter is one-and-done in this year’s postseason, as SUU takes out the most famous Samaritan’s Feet advocate in the quarters on Sunday.  Everyone missed this pick, but Lynch lost the most, as he had IUPUI winning this whole tournament.

CTC: Day 6 Preview

Saturday (Day 5) was jam-packed with games all over the country; Sunday is a little less “packed,” but has better (more CTC value) games.  This day will go a long way to see who has the advantage heading into the high-value, major tournaments.

MISSOURI VALLEY CHAMPIONSHIP:
Even though the final in The Valley pits #1 vs. #3, it is a rather unexpected final, mainly because of who is missing–Creighton.

  • #1 Northern Iowa vs. #3 Illinois State.  Top-seeded Northern Iowa will try and complete a great Valley season, but they will be tested by a red-hot Illinois St. team that remembers getting destroyed last year in The Valley final against Drake.  Everyone has Creighton winning the tournament, so there are no points on the line here.  Stri is going to take Ina’s CTC Valley title away.

Day 5 Recap: Bry Wins a Big Saturday, but Gains Little on the Leader

One of the better college basketball days of the year has come to a close, and the CTC is starting to take a little more shape, heading into the ends of the little tournaments and the beginning of the big ones.  The leader, Alexi, turns in yet another solid day, with 154 points.  This lengthens his lead of everyone but Bry, who won the day with 162.  Another good day for Ina keeps her in 2nd overall.  A very nice day for Lynch, as well, finishing 3rd on the day with 146.

DAY 5:
Bry-162
Alexi-154
Lynch-146
Ina-138
Stri-138
J-124
Doogan-118
Waters-96

OVERALL (point behind the leader):
Alexi-0 (406 total points)
Ina-24
Bry-30
Stri-90
J-106
Waters-114
Lynch-114
Doogan-146

MISSOURI VALLEY SEMIFINALS
The Final Four in The Valley were the top four seeds, and they faced off in the semifinal double-header on Saturday in St. Louis.  It would be hard to match the madness to occurred Friday night, but it should still be some really good basketball.

  • #1 Northern Iowa 76 – #4 Bradley 62.  For the first 32 minutes, this game went back and forth, with the two teams exchanging leads, but a 10-0 run midway through the second half turned a 1-point UNI lead to an 11-point lead that proved insurmountable.  The Panthers will advance to Sunday’s championship.  Ina, Stri, Alexi, and Lynch all got this game correct, but none of them have UNI winning the title game.
  • #3 Illinois State 73 – #2 Creighton 49.  Often, when a good team comes very close to being upset in the early-going of a postseason, they have “dodged the bullet” and they go on to great success.  This was certainly NOT the case for the 2009 Creighton Blue Jays.  They needed a miraculous shot to win Friday’s quarterfinal against Wichita St., but then they just did not show up in their semifinal game on Saturday against #3 Illinois St.  13-19 from three-point range propelled the Redbirds into Sunday’s final against #1 N. Iowa.  Everyone in the CTC had Creighton winning not only this game, but the finals as well, so this conference is all but over and the 2009 trophy will have Stri engraved on it.

CTC Day 5 Preview

The absolute biggest day in Week One is today.  There are quadruple-headers all over the country.  The 2009 CTC is off and running, with 12 conference tournaments having games today.  We’ll try and focus on the CTC implications with these games because there are so many

MISSOURI VALLEY SEMIFINALS:
“Arch Madness” continues tonight in St. Louis, with a semifinal double-header.  There are 48 game points up for grabs here in the CTC, as the top four seeds are in action.  We will see if any of the “madness” tonight can match that of last night with that CRAZY Creighton-Wichita St. game.

  • #1 Northern Iowa vs. #4 Bradley.  Half of us (Ina, Stri, Alexi, and Lynch) have #1 UNI going to the finals tonight.  Waters and J have Bradley in the upset.  Bry (SIU) and Doogan (Drake) have already lost this game.
  • #2 Creighton vs. #3 Illinois State.  Everyone has Creighton winning the whole tournament, so this game has basically no CTC implications.

Day 4 Recap: A Huge Day for Alexi Puts Him on Top

An absolutely huge day for Alexi–with 42 points more than anyone else.  Ina had a nice day, with 124, but Alexi’s 148 blew even her out of the water.  Doogan really struggled with only 64.  On the court, it was a very exciting day, where there was plenty of “madness” and, more importantly, set the stage for a crazy Saturday.  We will try to start shortening the recaps because there are so many, but it might be hard considering how great this month is…

DAY 4:
Alexi -148
Ina-124
Waters-100
Bry-96
Stri-96
J-80
Lynch-80
Doogan-64

OVERALL:
Alexi-252
Ina-244
Bry-214
Waters-196
Stri-178
J-176
Lynch-146
Doogan-142

MISSOURI VALLEY QUARTERFINALS:
“Arch Madness” clearly went mad on Friday night.  A quadruple-header showed the best that the Valley had to give.

  • #1 Northern Iowa 73 – #9 Indiana State 69.  The final score was a lot closer than it should have been, as UNI struggled mightily from the line at the end, but they did hold on to move to the semis.  J, Doogan, and Waters all lost points on this one, as they all had Drake winning this game.  Ina, Stri, Alexi, and Lynch gain the most with this win because they have UNI in the finals.
  • #2 Creighton 63 – #7 Wichita State 62.  Absolute MADNESS!  Creighton had a 20-point lead in the second half.  The Shockers then whittled it down, but could not get closer than 8 points until less than 1:30 to go.  But, they hit a couple threes and forced turnovers, when all of a sudden Toure Murry hit a three with :09 seconds left to give WSU a 62-61 lead.  Creighton drew up a play for the MVC player of the year, Booker Woodfox, and he drained an off-balance, one-footer from about 20 feet, at the buzzer.  Creighton wins and moves on.  Everyone got this right, but I’m sure no one thought it would be this close.
  • #3 Illinois State 78 – #6 Evansville 68.  With the game tied midway through the second half, the Redbirds went on a 15-3 run and never looked back.  A game Evansville team just did not have the fire power.  Illinois St. will move on the semis to face Creighton on Saturday.  J and Doogan got this wrong, but neither lost a finalist.
  • #4 Bradley 67 – #5 Southern Illinois 55.  S. Illinois was up 8 after the first 12 minutes, but the Braves scored 13 straight and then went on a 25-8 run, making this game a pretty convincing showing for the #4-seed.  Bradley will move on to face #1 N. Iowa in the semis on Saturday.  Bry and Lynch both got this wrong.  Bry even lost a finalist in SIU.  J and Waters keep their finalist pick of Bradley still alive.
