Are the Eagles better off with McNabb and Buckhalter OR Kolb and Westbrook?
Cimorelli’s Question of the Day

Personally, I don’t even think this is a debate. And, I say this as someone who is eerily in love with Brian Westbrook. But, McNabb is absolutely and completely essential for this offense to function. Missing Westbrook is big–check that, huge–but missing McNabb is fatal.
Well, as one of the bigger McNabb fans out there, I’d have to agree. But, I will point out that Kolb is really an unknown,
so that makes it hard question to be completely sure of. I have no doubt that McNabb is better than Kolb right now, but we
don’t know how big the gap is. That being said, I think in any hypotheticl like this, you’re better off taking the better
quarterback rather than the better running back.
The answer is 5 and Buck. But not by much. Brian Westbrook is possibly the most valuable player on any team in the NFL. But Westbrook with an ok QB is not dominating. But if you remember how good he was with Garcia, that kinda hurts my case. Ok, I just convinced myself that I’d take Westbrook on the field by himself versus 35 defenders.
This question is even easier to answer when you throw in the fact that the Eagles are playing the Bears in Chicago. McNabb loves playing for his hometown crowd, and the Bears defense loves giving up over 300 yards to opposing offenses. I say McNabb is more important; nevertheless, the “Westbrook flip” is gold when the Birds need to punch the ball in on the goal line for the TD. I doubt McNabb and all his pregame chunky soup could jump from the 5 yard line and land in the end zone without puking.
Westbrook makes the offense work- no questions asked. Did you see them once he left the game on Sunday- not impressive at all. Westbook presents match up problems for just about every defense they play. Run him on a sweep, up the middle, put him in the slot, throw a screen pass- he can do so much that is tough to plan for. McNabb- lacking the ability to run like he used to- does not present these same problems for defensive coordinaters. He is a great QB, but with average WR- this offense is going to flow thru everything Westbrook can do.
I would take Westbrook and any QB. Oneil stole a little of my tunder- stating with McNabb out- Jeff Garcia (and a running game with Westbrook as the center piece) lead the eagles into the playoffs. I love McNabb and Buck- but it’s silly to even debate this.
I’m glad a posted this. I was thinking of not posting it because I thought that it was silly to debate it–because I think it’s clear that McNabb and Buckhalter is the stronger Eagles team than Kolb and Westbrook. I didn’t make much of an argument before because I thought it was obvious, but now that there are dissenters, let me give it a shot
–Garcia: let us not forget that in the West Coast offense, Jeff Garcia is a FIVE-TIME pro bowler. Kevin Kolb has thrown one NFL pass and it was intercepted. Westbrook was healthy last year when A.J. Feeley had to take over for Donovan–how did they look then?
–Let us also not forget that the game’s only touchdown on Sunday was scored on a pass from McNabb to Buckhalter.
–This offense is designed around Donovan’s ability to throw the ball, on a line, to the entire field. Though Brian Westbrook is quite possibly the best back in the league, the gap between him and Buck/Lorenzo Booker (whom I love, by the way) is not NEARLY as great as the gap between McNabb and Kolb
I think the real debate would be who would you want on the offensive line, Philly or Cincy. Call me whatever you will for changing the whole disagreement, but coaching really helps you focus on what’s the most important part of the team.
Going back to the argument, it seems like we’re debating two things – 1) who’s the MVP on offense (Westbrook), and 2) who is more qualified to be in the NFL (right now, Buck). I’ll take Westbrook and Kolb with the rest of our team (offense and defense) over McNabb and Buck. Don’t get me wrong; I’m not like the rest of Philly – there’s nothing that would want me to get rid of Donovan anytime soon, but Westbrook is amazing and I’m glad that he signed a deal.
I kind of said this before, but I just think that quarterback is such a more important position than running back for the success of an offense, that you have go with McNabb. The Vikings have Adrian Peterson and a great offensive line, but they’re not really scaring anybody with Tarvaris Jackson or Gus Frerotte taking the snaps.
