BSB’s Question of the Day

Are the Phillies better if the Braves win the wild card (which means a first-round date with Arizona instead of St. Louis)?

If so, what should they do in this season-ending series with Atlanta?

Yes. I think the Cards are scarier than either the Braves or the D’Backs. However, I think they’re best off if they pound the Braves this weekend regardless of what that means for the playoffs. I’d much rather see them face off against St. Louis coming off a good regular season series against the Braves than them lay it up against Atlanta this week and then have to “flip the switch” to play good ball against Arizona. So best case scenario in my eyes is we dominate this Atlanta series and Houston sweeps St. Louis.

J, your response got me thinking. At first, I totally agreed with your “best-case scenario,” but wouldn’t the real best case-scenario be St. Louis winning a one-game playoff on Thursday?

While that would give the Phils the Cardinals matchup that we didn’t want, but wouldn’t you prefer to play a Cards team that couldn’t set their rotation over a D’backs team that will have a totally rested bullpen and Kennedy and Hudson lined up for Games 1 & 2?

Yeah, good thinking. That’s probably the best case. Though, I’m not scared of the D’Backs, even with a rested Kennedy and company.

Hey Bry, I was thinking the same thing about the Cards needing to play an extra game benefiting the Phils, but I don’t think it would have meant much. I do think it would have been important if Jaime Garcia was in line to start tonight, but he pitched Monday and wouldn’t have been available.

Lohse would have pitched tonight. It would have resulted in a need to rearrange the order of SPs, but the same guys would be going. If they played tonight, I think the order would definitely have been:
    1 – Garcia, 2 – Westbrook, 3 – Carpenter, 4 – Lohse, 5 – Garcia. Instead, it’ll be:
    1/2 – Garcia/Lohse either order, 3 – Carpenter, 4 – Westbrook, 5 – Garcia.

This all assumes no one is pitching on 3 days rest and the Cards see Garcia as the Phillies biggest challenge (which I do)
