According to this Boston Globe article, the Phillies are one of two teams that have made offers to Dodgers ace Derek Lowe.
Honestly, I think this is fantastic news (though it might mean that hometown boy Jamie Moyer pitches elsewhere next year). Lowe is durable, solid, and experienced. He is also a sinker-ball pitcher–exactly what you want in The Bank. Obviously, this will depend on the price, but I am excited about this possibility.
I also love the fact that the Boston Globe used the phrase “the World Champion Phillies.”
They’re reporting that the Yanks are going to sign CC for $160 million over 7. The Brewers offered $100 million over 5 with a bunch of the money deferred. The Giants indicated they might be willing to make an offer in line with the Brewers. The Angels, Red Sox, Mets, and Dodgers never got in the game. “Call me crazy” but haven’t we learned that it’s a terrible idea to out bid everyone else for a player by $60 million?!?!? Did CC really need an extra $60 million to play in NY? Does he hate it there that much? Isn’t this the kind of desperation move the Yankees swore they were done with after they got burned so many times with high priced free agents? Didn’t we hear constantly that they were going to return to the strategy that brought them all those world championships, i.e., cultivating from within? Who was the last 28 year old pitcher you would have looked back on and said, I’m glad I locked him up for 7 years? I know the guy’s great and the Yankees needed him, but still, seems excessive to me. Guess that’s why they’re the Yankees.
