Cimorelli’s Question of the Day

Assuming they are all available to the Eagles this year (and not in jail), what would be the order of preference for the following:

a). TJ Houshmandzadeh
b). Anquan Boldin
c). Tony Gonzalez
d). Marvin Harrison
e). Plaxico Burress
f). Michael Crabtree
g). save the money for a running back, o-lineman, or defensive back

c Tony Gonzalez- Nice big Red-Zone target- top priority
g save money for a running back, o-lineman, or defensive back (mostly for O-lineman)
f Michael Crabtree- a young receiver with his talent could fit nicely with Curtis and Jackson… and the birds could be
potentially set for a number of years at WR
b Anquan Boldin- He slipped a number of spots due to his “antics” in the title game and demands to management. Hell of a
    player though
a TJ Houshmandzadeh- I think the eagles need a big WR- and TJ seems to be similar to Jackson
d Marvin Harrison- Would love to see him play for the Eagles in his hometown, but he is older, and might not be worth the money he demands
e Plaxico Burress- I hear TO might get cut, maybe we can sigh both these guys.

  2. Doogan says:

Hmmm, I’m not gonna put the “save the money” in my list, because we really need O-tackles and at least one receiver, no matter what.

1: Boldin: I think he’s a no-doubt #1 receiver with great size. Would absolutely love to see him in an Eagle uni.
2: Houshmandzadeh: Would love to get him as well, but Boldin is clearly better to me.
3: Crabtree: Haven’t seen enough of him to say for sure, so this is a guess and maybe he belongs at the top, but probably not, because we’re ready to win now.
4: Burress: Obviously worried about character, but the guy is awesome.
5: Gonzalez: He’s well past his prime at this point. He’d be a nice addition, but I’m not sure he puts us over the top as an offense.
6: Harrison: He’s not the answer we’re looking for at this point, but would LOVE to get him and one of these other guys to go along with Desean Jackson. I’m drooling over that possibility.

On another note, Lavernues Coles unexpectedly became a free agent today. I would probably throw him in there right along with Burress (not that he’s as good as Burress, but he doesn’t have the character issues and is very solid).

I think I would rank them this way:

1). HOUSH because he’s a free agent and wouldn’t cost us a draft pick or two. Plus, he’s one of those “make your QB feel comfortable” kind of receivers that we need. I honestly think Jackson is on his way to being a solid deep threat, but I’m not sold on him being a 70-80 catch kind of guy.

2). BOLDIN, though if the price were equal, i would probably prefer him to Housh. He certainly can be that 80-catch guy and he is awesome at getting yards after the catch. I’m not concerned at all about his character issues. From all I’ve heard, he’s a GREAT guy who’s just fed up with Arizona–and, honestly, can you blame him?

3). GONZALEZ would be great because I’m not sold at all on Celek. Plus, as Waters mentioned. His red-zone efficiency would really help. And, I disagree with Doogan saying he’s “way past his prime.” I think he’s got 5-6 good years left, he’s just in a miserable place right now, in KC.

4). CRABTREE, though now with the reports that his injury is not that serious, there is really no shot that we can get him. I think he’s going to be a phenomenal receiver, though I still would want those other 3 before him because McNabb is getting older, so giving him two top receivers with a combined 1 year of NFL experience is not exactly ideal.

5). BURRESS, if he’s out of jail. Maybe I just didn’t learn from the TO fiasco, but I think Plax, despite all of his warts, if one of the top 5 receivers in the league. What are the Eagles looking for in a receiver? A guy who can stretch the field? Check. A guy who is real good in the red-zone? Check. A guy who will make the QB more comfortable and can catch 70-80 balls? Check. A bona-fied #1 with a #1’s attitude? Check. Still, he’s a hell of a risk, for obvious reasons.

6). HARRISON is interesting because I don’t think he’s going to garner a ton of attention, so I think that Doogan might be right on in thinking that we could get one of the above AND Harrison. That would be absolutely sensational. Imagine how great Harrison would be–leading by example–for the development of Jackson.

Coles is interesting. I think he could be an option if the asking prices on Boldin and Gonzalez are too high and Housh goes elsewhere. But, I think he’s clearly a pretty big step down from anyone on this list other than Harrison, at this point.
