In what order would you rank each division in the NFL?

This, I think, is interesting because there have been so many surprises this year. Here is the order that I came up with:

    1. AFC South–Definitely a huge surprise, if you were to say that in the beginning of the year. It looked like there was Indy and then everyone else either stunk or was Jacksonville, I mean, mediocre. But, Jax has been really good, Tennessee has a good shot at the playoffs and Houston may be one of the largest positive surprises of the year.

    2. NFC North–Again, if you were to say that this division would be considered one of the top 2 in the NFL at the beginning of the season, you might get hit. And, if you said that the Bears would be 5-6 AND this will still be a top 2 division, you might get shot. But, it is. Green Bay is a legit Super Bowl contender, the Vikings are an even bigger positive surprise than Houston, and despite them falling apart lately, the Lions are much better than was expected.

    3. NFC East–Now, this might be a homer pick, but I think that all four of these teams can beat just about anyone on any given day. The Eagles and Redskins are 5-8 and 6-7, respectively, and they have each lost 5 games by less than a TD. The Cowboys are the 3rd best team in football and the Giants are on pace to win 11 games. Maybe I have this division too low.

    4. AFC North–Yes, this is how bad some of these divisions really are. The fact that this division is the 4th best. Ugh. The Steelers are good (a little overrated, thought), and they’re at the top. And, the Ravens, despite their 7-game losing streak and last place position, are probably better than 10 other teams in the NFL. The Bengals are bad, but not atrocious. And, the Browns…uh, they’re going to the playoffs. I can’t believe I wrote that.

    5. AFC East–If the Pats were in any other division, regardless of the other 3 teams, that division would be in the top half. But, unfortunately for AFC East fans, the best team ever only effectively cancels out the worst team ever. The Bills are actually pretty good, but the Jets are awful. The only reason this is 5th is because there are some REALLY bad divisions…….

    6. AFC West–How bad does a division have to be to have a Norv Turner-led team lead by 2 games? Pretty bad. The Broncos are really bad and the Raiders and Chiefs are simply awful. The Chargers are like the NFL’s version of the Miami Heat–they don’t really have to play all that hard in the regular season because they’re gonna make the playoffs, so save it for then. This division makes the Chargers a scary team come January…even with Norv.

    7. NFC West–Only because they have the Seahawks (who aren’t really even that good). Even though the Cardinals have a shot at the playoffs, does anyone think they’re any good? Kurt Warner? And, then there is the 49ers and the Rams. Just awful!

    8. NFC South–Other than Drew Brees, the starting QBs in this division last week were Luke McCown, Chris Redman and Vinny Testaverde. This division is absolutely, incredibly awful.

In summary, there are a lot of really, really, really, really, really, really bad teams. So, somehow they have to be formed into really, really, really, really bad divisions. What happened to this league? Was it always like this and we just never realized it?

    1. AFC South – This is a no-brainer, I think.

    2. AFC North – I can’t believe this, but I think it’s right.

    3. NFC East – Can’t believe this either. The Eagles and Redskins are really not good, but not horrible, and that counts for a lot in this year’s NFL. The Giants may win 11 games but that doesn’t make them a good team. They’re mediocre at best. The Cowboys are far and away the best team in the NFC and I, for one, couldn’t be more unhappy about it.

    4. NFC North – The Packers aren’t great, but still the second-best team in the conference, the Vikings have Tarvaris Jackson playing qb, and the Lions and Bears stink. Sounds like a top-half of the NFL division!

    5. AFC East – I’m not buying that the Bills are any good, but the best team in the history of the league gets you something.

    6. AFC West – I’m pretty surprised by how bad the Broncos are.

    7. NFC South – I think the Bucs are pretty good when Jeff Garcia is healthy. Maybe the third best team in the NFC. And the Saints don’t completely suck.

    8. NFC West – I like the Bucs slightly over Seattle, and the Saints slightly over Arizona.
