Phillies Semi-Weekly Report Card #13

Record since last Report Card:  6-2

Overall Record:  80-60 (1st in division; 0.5 game ahead of Atlanta)

Yes, after a strong week, the Phils have finally run down the Braves and moved back atop the NL East for the first time in over three months.  Not to take anything away from what they did, but it didn’t hurt that the Braves seem to be doing their best Mets impression here in the season’s final month.  Atlanta was 2-5 on the week, including losing their last two games to the lowly Pirates.

Of course, it’s impossible to say that the Phils haven’t earned their current position.  Since July 21st, when they sat 7 games behind the Braves, they’ve been the best team in baseball, with a 32-14 record.  It’s just another example of something that we’ve been harping on for a few years now: this team is at its best when the pressure is highest.  Not only are they now leading the division, but they’re also only half a game behind Cincinnati for the best record in the NL.  We shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves, just getting into the playoffs is really the most important thing, but considering the NL finally won the All-Star Game, as well as how well the Phils have played at home, it would be pretty nice to secure home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

On to the grades:

Chase celebrates his Rocky Mountain Slam

Position Players:  It was clearly a huge improvement from the ‘F’ grade they earned in the previous Report Card, and the 6-2 record may suggest a good week from these guys, but there were still plenty of issues.  Let’s start with the good news:  they scored just over 5 runs a game, more than doubling their output from the previous week.  They were even able to pick up a win in Colorado when the pitching staff allowed 11 runs, thanks to a 12-run outburst led by a Chase Utley grand slam.

Individual highlights:  The big news is that Utley and Howard are looking good.  Utley hit .387 with 11 RBI, while Howard launched 3 homers.  Victorino had a huge week, hitting .367 with 2 homers and 6 steals.  Polanco hit .333, including the Hit of the Week with his RBI single in the 8th inning on Tuesday to put the Phils back ahead after the bullpen blew a 3-run lead.  On the negative side, Rollins continued to struggle.  A 2-for-19 stretch prompted Charlie to drop him to the 5-hole for the past two games, where he responded with 3 hits.  That 5-hole belongs to Werth though, so Rollins might just be stopping over there on his way to Victorino’s vacated 6th or 7th spot in the order.

Rollins is nice segue into the bad news:  They failed to score more than 2 runs in 3 of the games.  They were shut down by two mediocre Brewer pitchers at home.  Then, the real low-light, getting one-hit over 6 innings by a 28-year-old making his ML debut, en route to a 7-1 loss on Monday afternoon.

But the real problem was with the defense.  Having trouble hitting the ball is excusable, but handing out extra outs and extra runs with careless defense at this time of the year is not.  Tuesday night’s win would not have been as close were it not for a misplay by Howard and Blanton on a groundball in the 3rd inning, an unnecessary throw home by Utley in the 7th, and a wild throw home by Werth in the 8th.  All told, the Phils made 8 errors in these 8 games, and that doesn’t even tell the whole story about the sloppy defensive play.

Grade:  C

Starting Pitchers:  Certainly not a banner week for these guys, but they were solid for the most part.  The Start of the Week, for the second straight week, goes to Cole Hamels, who threw 7 shutout innings, allowing 3 hits, in a 1-0 win over the Brewers on Friday.  Cole has an 18-inning scoreless streak going.  Runner-up is Oswalt’s effort last Wednesday, when he allowed just 1 hit in 6.1 shutout innings, but did walk 6 Dodgers.

The other 6 starts of the week were fairly middling efforts.  Oswalt allowed 4 runs in 7 innings in his other start, and Halladay had the same line (on four solo homers) in his only start.  Joe Blanton was the victim of some poor defense, allowing 4 unearned runs in his two no-decisions, along with 6 earned ones.  He was really knocked around in Coors Field on Thursday, giving up 10 hits in 4.1 innings.

Kyle Kendrick took the loss on Sunday, allowing 4 runs or more for the 5th time in his last 6 starts.  Thanks to a double-header on Monday, Vance Worley made the first spot-start of the year for the Phils, and allowed 2 runs in 5 innings.  There’s been talk of Worley replacing Kendrick in the rotation.  The good news is that, thanks to off days, the Phils will only need a 5th starter three more times.  Worley was solid, but he wasn’t overly impressive.  He might have a future in the rotation (as early as next year), but I would just stick with Kendrick for those three starts, unless he gets even worse.  We’re in a pennant race now, and Kendrick has the experience.

Grade:  C+

Lights Out for Lidge?

Bullpen: Kind of a difficult week to sum up for the pen.  On the one hand, the Phils were 4-0 in 1-run games, but two of those games were only that close because the pen allowed multiple runs.  It was odd to see Madson stay on for the 9th inning of a 1-run game on Tuesday.  It seemed like Charlie was being overly cautious about working Lidge too much, but he revealed after the game that Lidge has been feeling elbow soreness, and is unavailable until at least Friday.  This is, obviously, not good news for the Phils or their pen.

Despite a wild pitch that allowed the tying run to score in the 8th on Tuesday, Madson did have another strong week, giving up no earned runs in 5 innings.  He’s now allowed no earned runs in 24 of his last 25 outings, which is really impressive.  Phillie fans long ago gave up hope of Madson being able to handle the closer role, but he’s certainly first in line for the job if Lidge is out for an extended period of time.  Despite a very shaky save in Colorado on Thursday, Lidge also had a good week, giving up no earned runs in 4 innings.

Chad Durbin had a rough week, allowing 5 runs in 4 innings, and Contreras had a rare poor outing on Tuesday, giving up those 3 runs that tied the game at 7 in the 8th.  The lefty situation continues to be a pretty huge concern.  Romero has come in and walked the only batter he faced in his last two games, Bastardo continues to be largely ineffective, and Mike Zagurski gave 3 runs in his first appearance since being re-called.  Veteran starter Nate Robertson may get a look as a situational lefty in the coming days.

Grade:  C

Up Next:  This is one of the first Report Cards where the team’s record really doesn’t correspond to the grades.  That probably tells us that the 6-2 record was a bit of a mirage this week.  The Phils actually only outscored their opponents by one run in those 8 games, which makes those C/C+ grades look more logical.  But it’s all about picking up W’s, so clearly it was a successful week.  Let’s give some credit to Charlie Manuel for finding a way to win 6 of these 8 games.

The home stand wraps up tonight with the Marlins again, followed by a road trip to New York and Miami.  Keep an eye out for whether Kendrick or Worley gets the nod to start in Citi Field on Saturday.

BSB NFL Two-a-Days: Week Eleven

Week Ten was the last week of byes, so every week from here on out is a full slate of games…awesome!  And, there are some pretty good ones here in Week Eleven.

Thursday, November 18:
8:20 – Chicago (6-3) at MIAMI (3-6)
Records aside, the Dolphins are a better team.  Plus, they are at home, with a better coach on a short week, and they need this game desperately.  The Bears are coming off a big win over Minnesota and have the Eagles coming up.  I like Miami here on the NFL Network.

Sunday, November 21:
1:00 – BALTIMORE (5-4) at Carolina (6-3)
The Ravens are the better team and will probably really need this game.  Plus, they have three extra days to rest and prepare for Carolina’s running attack.  I like the Ravens here.

1:00 – Houston (5-4) at N.Y. JETS (6-3)
I’m not as big of a Jets fan as many, so I looked for a reason to pick them to lose this game, but I just couldn’t.  The weather in Jersey in the middle of November is probably a much bigger help to the Jets style of play than Houston’s and the Texans are coming off a tough divisional matchup in Jacksonville.  The only thing that gave me pause was the short week coming up for the Jets (they play the Bengals on Thanksgiving night), but it wasn’t enough to sway me to the Texans on the road.

1:00 – Arizona (3-6) at KANSAS CITY (3-6)
Early game for a West Coast team.  Still a decent homefield advantage.  And, honestly, I think the Chiefs are almost as good (if not better) than the Cardinals on a neutral field.  Give me the Chiefs here, at home.

1:00 – Washington (3-6) at TENNESSEE (5-4)
I want to take the Redskins here, but it’s just not a good spot.  They are coming off of an emotional game against the Eagles on Monday night.  The short week, on the road, coming off an emotional game leads me to a pretty easy pick of Tennessee here.

1:00 – Buffalo (1-8) at CINCINNATI (5-4)
The Bengals are coming off a tough game in Indy, and have a short week to prepare for the Jets on Thanksgiving.  This would be a really good spot to pick against them in a “trap” game, but the schedule-makers gave them a huge break by giving them the Bills at home here.  If my analysis of either of these two teams is even close to correct, then this should be a walkover for Cincy.

1:00 – Oakland (7-2) at PITTSBURGH (4-5)
I almost had to do it again, as the schedule-makers continue to throw gift after gift at the Oakland Raiders.  Somehow, I was able to exert enough willpower to just pick the better team here.  The Steelers are going to really need this game, so at home, they should be able to get it.  But, it’s not a good spot.  The Raiders are coming off of a bye, so they’ve had two weeks to prepare for this one.  The Steelers, on the other hand, are coming off these three games: @NO, @Cincy, vs. NE.  It’s a brutal part of their schedule, and this is no easy game.  I had a lot of trouble with this one, but I’m going to go with the Steelers here to pull it out at 1:00 against a West Coast team.

1:00 – Cleveland (2-7) at JACKSONVILLE (3-6)
Just when you think the Jags are done, they get a nice cushy part of their schedule, and they’ve won three straight.

1:00 – Detroit (3-6) at DALLAS (6-3)
I like the Lions this year, but the schedule just won’t give them any breaks.  Though the the Cowboys are coming off a tough one with the Giants, they should be able to take care of Detroit here at home, as both teams prepare for their annual Thanksgiving home games.

1:00 – GREEN BAY (6-3) at Minnesota (4-5)
The schedule just keeps throwing haymakers at the Vikings, as they get their chance at hosting the Pack here thwarted by coming off a tough game at Chicago, while Green Bay is coming off of the bye.  Two weeks to prepare and all this emotion leads me to thinking that Green Bay should go into the dome and get a big win here.

4:05 – Seattle (1-8) at NEW ORLEANS (7-2)
Saints off of a bye at home against Seattle?  No-brainer.

4:05 – ATLANTA (7-2) at St. Louis (1-8)
Atlanta off of their bye at a bad St. Louis team who is coming off of a trip out west.  Another easy one.

4:05 – Tampa Bay (1-8) at SAN FRANCISCO (5-4)
A bad Bucs team out west to face a decent Niners team?  Man, these late games are not exactly must-see events, huh?

4:15 – Indianapolis (8-1) at NEW ENGLAND (7-2)
I guess who cares about those other games when you’ve got the game of the week to pay attention to.  This one is really tough, obviously.  Both teams are coming off tough games (Indy against Cincy, NE at Pitt).  Both teams have tough games coming up (Indy hosts SD, NE is at Det on T-giving).  In the end, I had to just go with the home team, but I don’t feel confident about it at all, that’s for sure.

8:20 – N.Y. Giants (5-4) at PHILADELPHIA (6-3)
This is a really tough one.  The Eagles have a short week of preparation, coming off a Monday night game against Washington.  The Giants are coming into this after a brutal game at home against Dallas.  Just like the game right above, I have no idea here, so I’m going to reluctantly go with the home team, but it’s 51-49.

Monday, November 22:
8:30 – Denver (3-6) at SAN DIEGO (7-2)
I’m not sure why ESPN picked this game as the Monday night game, but I guess we’ll get some early rest, as this one should be a blowout.  The Chargers off the bye, hosting a bad Denver team?  Easy win for SD.

STANDINGS AFTER WEEK 11
NFC EAST
7-3 Dallas
7-3 Philadelphia
5-5 N.Y. Giants
3-7 Washington

The Cowboys and Eagles stay atop the division, as the Birds get a huge win over Big Blue.  The ‘Skins are pretty much done, at this point, while the Giants need a big finish.

NFC NORTH
7-3 Green Bay
6-4 Chicago
4-6 Minnesota
3-7 Detroit

On the back of a big win at Minnesota, the Packers regain the top spot in the North.  The Vikings may have dug themselves too big of a hole now, at 4-6.

NFC SOUTH
8-2 New Orleans
8-2 Atlanta
6-4 Carolina
1-9 Tampa Bay

A slip-up from Carolina gives the two big boys some breathing room here.

NFC WEST
6-4 San Francisco
3-7 Arizona
1-9 Seattle
1-9 St. Louis

At 6-4, the Niners aren’t far away from clinching this division…ugh.

AFC EAST
8-2 New England
7-3 N.Y. Jets
4-6 Miami
1-9 Buffalo

Pats and Jets continue to roll, while the Dolphins get a big win over Chicago to keep their slim chances alive.  The Bills have clinched another losing season.

AFC NORTH
6-4 Baltimore
6-4 Cincinnati
5-5 Pittsburgh
2-8 Cleveland

The big three all win this week and this division continues to be hotly contested.  The Browns have now lost 8 in a row after a 2-0 start.

AFC SOUTH
8-2 Indianapolis
6-4 Tennessee
5-5 Houston
4-6 Jacksonville

Another big win for the Titans puts them into second-place, as the Texans fall back to their familiar .500 record.  The Jags have won three straight to make themselves somewhat relevant again.

AFC WEST
8-2 San Diego
7-3 Oakland
4-6 Kansas City
3-7 Denver

The Chargers take the lead back by themselves, as the Raiders fall just short in Pittsburgh.  The Chiefs are putting together a nice season, while the Broncos fall to last in the West.

PLAYOFF PICTURE AFTER WEEK 11
NFC
#6 Philadelphia (7-3) at #3 Dallas (7-3)
#5 Atlanta (8-2) at #4 San Francisco (6-4)

t.b.d. vs. #2 Green Bay (7-3)
t.b.d. vs. #1 New Orleans (8-2)

In the mix:  Carolina (6-4), Chicago (6-4)

The NFC is starting to take some shape here after 10 games.  The Saints are still in the top-spot because of their tiebreaker against Atlanta.  The Packers are now #2, having passed the Bears for the North lead, and winning their game against Dallas in Week Nine.  The Eagles are by themselves in the 6-spot and are set up for another epic playoff matchup with the hated Cowboys (who have the division because of a better divisional record).  And, you can probably pencil in the second-place team from the South (currently, Atlanta) as traveling to San Francisco for the wild card round.

AFC
#6 Oakland (7-3) at #3 Indianapolis (8-2)
#5 N.Y. Jets (7-3) at #4 Cincinnati (6-4)

t.b.d. at #2 New England (8-2)
t.b.d. at #1 San Diego (8-2)

In the mix:  Baltimore (6-4), Tennessee (6-4), Pittsburgh (5-5)

The Chargers have now taken the #1 spot, thanks to their win over New England.  The Pats are now #2, thanks to their win over Indy this week.  The Colts, at 8-2, fall to the 3-spot and will have to play the opening round of the playoffs if things hold as they are now.  But, they get a shot to get back into the top two, as they have a showdown with the Chargers in Week Twelve.  The Bengals, having beaten Baltimore already this year, win the North and get the #4-spot.  The Jets and Raiders are the only two 7-3 wild card contenders, so they get the two spots.  The Jets have a better record vs. the AFC, so they are currently #5 with the Raiders #6.

BSB NFL Two-a-Days: Week Ten

While Week Nine was the de facto halfway point in the season, Week Ten marks another waypoint in the NFL season–the last week with byes.  After this, we’ll have every team in action every week with seasons on the line.  This week, however, isn’t as good of a slate as it can be, as the four teams with byes are a combined 27-9, so there aren’t that many good teams that do play this week.  But, hey, it’s still football, and it’s still fantastic.

BYES: Green Bay (6-3), New Orleans (7-2), Oakland (7-2), San Diego (7-2)

Thursday, November 11:
8:20 – Baltimore (5-3) at ATLANTA (6-2)
The first NFL Network game of the year is an awfully big one.  This is one of those games where, if you’re a fan of either team, you look to this one as one that could be the defining game of the entire season.  And, to boot, it is, BY FAR, the most difficult game for me to pick this week.  In the end, I thought that a short week of preparation for two teams with excellent head coaches is probably more advantageous to the home team than would be a full week of preparation, so I am going with the Falcons here…by a hair.

Sunday, November 14:
1:00 – TENNESSEE (4-4) at Miami (3-5)
This is yet another brutal scheduling spot for the Dolphins, as they have to host the Titans coming off of their bye.  The Dolphins are coming off an intensely physical game in Baltimore and have to get right back up and play next Thursday.  This is a desperate time for the ‘Phins, but it’s probably equally desperate for Tennessee.  I believe that the Dolphins are really good this year, but also I believe in Jeff Fisher and think that the Titans can pull it together with two weeks to prepare for this one.  Another tough loss for Miami.

1:00 – N.Y. JETS (5-3) at Cleveland (2-6)
The Jets should continue to roll here against a team that they are clearly more talented than.

1:00 – Cincinnati (5-3) at INDIANAPOLIS (7-1)
The hits just keep coming to the Bengals, as they have a short week after a brutal game with Pittsburgh to prepare for the best team in football on the road.  The Colts, coming off the loss in Philly should hold on here for a win.  The only thing that gives me pause is that we all know the Indy-NE rivalry is huge, well, next week is Indy at New England, but I think they’re professional enough to be able to finish this one off before thinking about Brady and company.

1:00 – Houston (5-3) at JACKSONVILLE (2-6)
The Jags off the bye; the Texans off an emotional win over San Diego.  The Jags trying to save their season; the Texans possibly looking ahead to the Jets next week.  In Jacksonville, this is a game that the Texans franchise historically loses, and I think they do it again this year.

1:00 – Minnesota (4-4) at CHICAGO (5-3)
If 40-year old Brett Favre playing in Soldier Field in mid-November wasn’t enough to sell you on the Bears winning this game, what if I told you that the Vikings hosted the Packers next week?  This is a good spot for the Bears to pick up a pretty big win.

1:00 – CAROLINA (5-3) at Tampa Bay (1-7)
The Panthers may in for a letdown after beating New Orleans last week, but I think that they’re running game, alone, is good enough to beat a bad Tampa team, even in Tampa.

1:00 – DETROIT (2-6) at Buffalo (1-7)
Ugh.  Is anyone watching this game?  The Lions are clearly more talented than the Bills and probably care more at this point in the season, so I like them to go into Buffalo and take one.

4:05 – Kansas City (3-5) at DENVER (2-6)
The Broncos didn’t have the typical bye week, as they are returning from London, but I still think that they’ve had enough to time to warrant picking them, at home, against the Chefs.  (Ya, that’s great, but who are the Chefs?  Great googily-moogily.)

4:15 – DALLAS (5-3) at N.Y. Giants (5-3)
I big NFC Beast showdown in the New Meadowlands.  The Cowboys are probably smarting from a loss in Green Bay, while the Giants are recovering from a long trip to Seattle.  Dallas can focus all on this game, as they host Detroit next week, while the Giants go to the Linc against the hated Eagles.  Plus, Eli isn’t very good at home.  I like the Cowboys to win this one, on the road.

4:15 – Seattle (1-7) at ARIZONA (2-6)
It just goes from bad to worse for the Seahawks, as they will probably lose to a bad Arizona team here.  The Cardinals, at home, do still have a couple talented players with some professional pride and should be able to get this one.

4:15 – St. Louis (1-7) at SAN FRANCISCO (4-4)
Like the Broncos, the Niners are returning from a long trip to England, but are rewarded with one week off because of a bye and then another week off because they have the Rams at home.

8:20 – NEW ENGLAND (6-2) at Pittsburgh (4-4)
How often can the Steelers really get up for brutal matchups like this?  Two weeks ago, they were in New Orleans on Sunday Night Football; last week, they were home against Cincinnati on Monday Night Football; and, now, they have the Patriots back on Sunday night again.  That is just too much for even the Steelers to get through.  I like the Pats, despite their eyeing of the showdown with Indy next week.

Monday, November 15:
8:30 – Philadelphia (6-2) at WASHINGTON (2-6)
An absolute brutal spot for the Birds here.  They are coming off a home game against Peyton Manning and the Colts, and they have the Giants coming to town next week, and in the middle they have to travel to DC to take on their ex-QB and the Redskins who are, oh by the way, coming off their bye week.  Everything points to D-Mac playing some air guitar and throwing some touchdowns.

STANDINGS AFTER WEEK 10
NFC EAST
6-3 Dallas
6-3 Philadelphia
5-4 N.Y. Giants
3-6 Washington

In a week of all Beast vs. Beast here in the NFC, the Redskins and Cowboys come out victorious.  The Cowboys are back into a first-place tie, while the Giants remain a game out.

NFC NORTH
6-3 Chicago
6-3 Green Bay
4-5 Minnesota
3-6 Detroit

If I told you before the season that the Packers would be tied for first in the NFC North after ten weeks, you probably wouldn’t be surprised at all.  But, if I told you that it wasn’t the Vikings, but the Bears who shared that lead, you’d probably tell me that I’m crazy.  Hey, maybe I am…

NFC SOUTH
7-2 New Orleans
7-2 Atlanta
6-3 Carolina
1-8 Tampa Bay

This division continues to impress, with 3 teams at 6-3 or better.  The surprising Panthers are only a game back of the two non-surprising division leaders.

NFC WEST
5-4 San Francisco
3-6 Arizona
1-8 Seattle
1-8 St. Louis

The Niners win again to maintain a two-game lead in this abysmal division.

AFC EAST
7-2 New England
6-3 N.Y. Jets
3-6 Miami
1-8 Buffalo

For the third straight week, the Pats and Jets win, while the Dolphins and Bills lose.  This is big-time trouble for Miami right now.

AFC NORTH
5-4 Baltimore
5-4 Cincinnati
4-5 Pittsburgh
2-7 Cleveland

An 0-4 week has left this division bruised and battered and possibly staring at only one playoff team.  The rough schedules are killing them right now.

AFC SOUTH
8-1 Indianapolis
5-4 Houston
5-4 Tennessee
3-6 Jacksonville

Tennessee has a pulse with a big win at Miami.  Houston loses a bad one in Jacksonville, while Indy continues to roll.

AFC WEST
7-2 Oakland
7-2 San Diego
3-6 Denver
3-6 Kansas City

The Broncos beat the Chiefs to move into a third-place tie…4 games back.  The leaders had the week off.

PLAYOFF PICTURE AFTER WEEK 10
NFC
#6 Green Bay (6-3) at #3 Chicago (6-3)
#5 Atlanta (7-2) at #4 San Francisco (5-4)

t.b.d. vs. #2 Dallas (6-3)
t.b.d. vs. #1 New Orleans (7-2)

In the mix:  Philadelphia (6-3), Carolina (6-3), N.Y. Giants (5-4)

Wow, the NFC got shaken up big-time in Week Ten.  The Saints remain at #1 and the Niners are in their guaranteed #4 spot, but the other four positions all changed hands.  The Eagles and Cowboys still haven’t played yet, but the ‘Boys have a better divisional record, so they get the division.  The Bears beat the Packers in Week Two, so they have the North.  The Cowboys beat the Bears in Week Three, so they get the bye.  Atlanta is solid at #5, while Green Bay, thanks to their win over the Eagles in Week One are #6.  The Eagles and Panthers are tied for that last spot and the Giants are only a game back.

AFC
#6 N.Y. Jets (6-3) at #3 New England (7-2)
#5 Oakland (7-2) at #4 Cincinnati (5-4)

t.b.d. at #2 San Diego (7-2)
t.b.d. at #1 Indianapolis (8-1)

In the mix:  Baltimore (5-4), Houston (5-4), Tennessee (5-4)

Unlike the craziness in the NFC, the AFC doesn’t really change at all.  The only difference is that the Jets are now the outright holders of the #6 seed.  The Chargers and Pats are tied for #2, but the Bolts beat NE head-to-head in Week Seven, so they hold the tiebreaker.

BSB NFL Two-a-Days: Week Nine

Week Eight is in the books and Week Nine (another light schedule) will take every team to the halfway point in their season.  For the first time in this preview, we will start taking a look at the playoff picture, as it’s starting to take a little shape here.

BYES: Denver (2-6), Jacksonville (2-6), San Francisco (4-4), St. Louis (1-7), Tennessee (4-4), Washington (2-6)

Sunday, November 7:
1:00 – N.Y. JETS (4-3) at Detroit (2-5)
I really wanted to pick Detroit here–I even had the paragraph written and had moved on to the next game, but I came back.  I can’t really justify the Lions knocking off the Jets.  I think it’s a real toss up game, but the Jets are just the better team and their defense should harrass young QB Matthew Stafford.  I think that there are better days on the horizon for Detroit, but just not yet.  I almost had them here, but we’ve got to keep some credibility, right?

1:00 – Miami (3-4) at BALTIMORE (4-3)
Yet another brutal scheduling spot for Miami, as they have to play in Baltimore against a rested Ravens team coming off of a bye and desperate for a win.  Yes, Baltimore has a short week coming up to prepare for Miami on Thursday night, but they’ve had two week to gameplan the Dolphins and should be able to get this one done.

1:00 – NEW ENGLAND (5-2) at Cleveland (2-5)
This one might be a closer call than many realize, as the Browns are at home and coming off of the bye, but, short of blizzard conditions in Cleveland, I don’t see the Browns defense stopping New England from putting up at least 30.

1:00 – San Diego (7-1) at HOUSTON (4-3)
This is a tough spot for both teams, actually.  The Texans have a short week, coming off a Monday night affair with arch-rival Indianapolis, but they have the luxury of playing at home at 1:00 against a West Coast team.  The Chargers, who I nearly picked in this game, are coming off a physical game against Tennessee and are looking ahead to a bye week.  This is definitely the kind of team that might just mail it in on the road if they are 7-1 and staring at a bye week.  Just sayin’…

1:00 – CHICAGO (4-3) at Buffalo (1-6)
The Bears are coming off of the bye and get the break of playing their “road” game in Toronto and not Buffalo.  Ya, as if the Bills needed anything more to work against them, now they have to travel 2 hours for one of their home games every year.

1:00 – Arizona (2-5) at MINNESOTA (3-4)
A bad Arizona team on the road in an early game against an elite, but desperate Vikings team.  Next…

1:00 – Tampa Bay (1-6) at ATLANTA (5-2)
A bad Tampa team on the road against a hungry Falcons team with two weeks to prepare.  This one’s easy, too.

1:00 – New Orleans (7-1) at CAROLINA (4-3)
A chink in the armor here for the defending champs, as they head into their bye week?  They got beat up at home by Pittsburgh last week, and now I can see them struggling to get anything going against the ball control offense of the Panthers.  The NFC South just got a lot more interesting.

4:05 – N.Y. GIANTS (4-3) at Seattle (1-6)
You all know how much I want to pick against the Giants every time their name comes up, but I can’t do it again here.  The Giants have two weeks to prepare for a bad Seattle team.  Yes, these road trips are tough, and yes, they have their eyes set on Dallas next week, but if I picked the Giants to lose to Seattle, my homerism might be too much for me to be able to pick the next one.

4:15 – Indianapolis (7-0) at PHILADELPHIA (5-2)
I know I just made a joke about being a homer, but at least give me the chance to explain.  The reason I do this week-by-week analysis is to find out things that might not otherwise be apparent, but play huge roles in the ebb and flow of an NFL season.  And, this game sums it up completely.  If you looked at the Eagles schedule and just tried to find wins and losses, you would look at a game against Indy and just say “L.”  And, you probably wouldn’t be too far off.  However, these games are not played in a vacuum.  Humor me here.  The Eagles are coming off of a bye.  Andy Reid is something like 10-1 in his career after the bye, and I’m pretty sure he’s never lost at home after the bye.  Plus, the Colts just played a heated divisional game on Monday night against Houston, and have a really tough game against Cincinnati next week.  It’s never good to see Indy on your schedule, but everything is in place for the Eagles to win this game.  And, honestly, that is as unbiased as I could be, as I think I would take about 20 or so teams in this spot to beat Indy, it just happened to fall to my team.

4:15 – Kansas City (3-4) at OAKLAND (6-2)
For like the 97th week in a row, I’ve wanted to pick against the Raiders, but just couldn’t.  I can’t find a reason to pick the Chiefs to win on the road in this one; I really can’t.

8:20 – Dallas (5-2) at GREEN BAY (5-3)
What a game this is going to be.  Both teams are coming off of tough losses (Green Bay to the Jets and Dallas to the Jags).  What it comes down to for me are two things:  (1) the Packers are at home on a cold November night in Wisconsin, and (2) the Packers have a bye week coming up and have probably had this game circled on their calendar for a couple weeks now, while the Cowboys have the hated Giants next week.  For these two reasons, I am going with the Pack to take this game on the Frozen Tundra.

Monday, November 8:
8:30 – PITTSBURGH (3-4) at Cincinnati (5-2)
Wow, this one is really tough.  Both teams are coming off of tough wins (Cincy over Miami, Pitt at NO).  Both teams have tough games next week (Cincy is at Indy, Pitt hosts NE).  I think both teams are immensely talented.  How do we separate this?  The Bengals are at home on Monday night, but the Steelers are going to be pretty desperate at this point in the season.  This is such a tough game to figure out and should go a very long way in deciding a lot in the AFC playoffs.  This is officially the hardest game that I have predicted all season in any week, but I am going to go with the Steelers.  As I have said before, one of the most important adages in the NFL these days is “when in doubt, go with the team that needs it more.”  And, that is what I’m doing here.  I believe that, at this point in the season, the Steelers will need this game more than the Bengals will.  But, it’s a true toss of a coin.

STANDINGS AFTER WEEK 9
NFC EAST
6-2 Philadelphia
5-3 Dallas
5-3 N.Y. Giants
2-6 Washington

A big win over Indy for the Eagles put them in first place in the NFC Beast.  The Cowboys take a tough loss and fall into a second-place tie with Big Blue.  The ‘Skins have the week off to think about what they’ve done.

NFC NORTH
6-3 Green Bay
5-3 Chicago
4-4 Minnesota
2-6 Detroit

The Lions were very close to making this a 4-0 week for the NFC North, but I just couldn’t pull the trigger on them beating the Jets.  The Pack got a big win over Dallas, as they head into their bye.

NFC SOUTH
7-2 New Orleans
6-2 Atlanta
5-3 Carolina
1-7 Tampa Bay

Carolina’s win over the Saints made this division very interesting all of a sudden.  The Saints will take their bye week to regroup after back-to-back losses, while the Falcons will try and make up the half-game by which they trail the champs.

NFC WEST
4-4 San Francisco
2-6 Arizona
1-7 Seattle
1-7 St. Louis

An off day in the NFC West is basically a victory, as the Niners sit this one out and gain half-games on their two closest competitors.

AFC EAST
6-2 New England
5-3 N.Y. Jets
3-5 Miami
1-7 Buffalo

The Pats and Jets win, while the Dolphins and Bills lose…again.

AFC NORTH
5-3 Baltimore
5-3 Cincinnati
4-4 Pittsburgh
2-6 Cleveland

The absolutely enormous Monday night game went to the Steelers, we now have a first-place tie in the North.  And, the Steelers have officially entered what is going to be a thrilling three-team race.

AFC SOUTH
7-1 Indianapolis
5-3 Houston
4-4 Tennessee
2-6 Jacksonville

The last of the unbeatens falls in Week Nine, as the ’72 Dolphins celebrate.  The Texans picked up a game with a big win over San Diego.  The two also-rans had the week off.

AFC WEST
7-2 Oakland
7-2 San Diego
3-5 Kansas City
2-6 Denver

Uh…wow.  We are going to enter Week Eleven (both team have byes in Week Ten) with a flat-footed tie atop the AFC West.  Who would have thunk it?

PLAYOFF PICTURE AFTER WEEK 9
NFC
#6 Car/Chi/Dal/NYG (5-3) at #3 Green Bay (6-3)
#5 Atlanta (6-2) at #4 San Francisco (4-4)

t.b.d. vs. #2 Philadelphia (6-2)
t.b.d. vs. #1 New Orleans (7-2)

In the mix:  Minnesota (4-4)

Despite back-to-back losses, the Saints still have the best record in the NFC.  The surprising Eagles would earn the bye if the season ended now.  Green Bay is atop the Central, and San Fran (who you can all but guarantee will be the #4-seed) is atop the West.  The Falcons have a firm grip on the first wild card, but there is a four-way tie for the last spot between the Giants, Cowboys, Bears, and Panthers, and honestly, I don’t feel like figuring out a four-way tiebreaker.

AFC
#6 NYJ/Bal/Hou (5-3) at #3 New England (6-2)
#5 Oakland (7-2) at #4 Cincinnati (5-3)

t.b.d. at #2 San Diego (7-2)
t.b.d. at #1 Indianapolis (7-1)

In the mix:  Pittsburgh (4-4), Tennessee (4-4)

The Colts, who like the Saints in the NFC, lost this week, but are still looking to repeat as top-seed.  The Chargers win the head-to-head tiebreaker against the Raiders for the West and the bye.  The Pats are atop the East, and the Bengals beat Baltimore in Week Two to give them the head-to-head tiebreaker in the North.  The Raiders, at 7-2, are the top wild card, while there is a three-way tie between the Jets, Ravens, and Texans for the final spot.

BSB NFL Two-a-Days: Week Eight

A great Week Seven leads us into a lightly scheduled Week Eight.  This week is the first of back-to-back weeks of just 13 games, as 6 teams enjoy their bye weeks.  There are still some pretty tasty matchups here on Halloween, though, including one across the pond.

BYES: Atlanta (5-2), Baltimore (4-3), Chicago (4-3), Cleveland (2-5), N.Y. Giants (4-3), Philadelphia (5-2)

Sunday, October 31:
1:00 (London, England) – Denver (2-5) vs. SAN FRANCISCO (3-4)
I like Mike Singletary to win the coaching battle here and have his guys more prepared to play overseas than Josh McDaniels’ Broncos.  Give me the Niners in Wembley Stadium.

1:00 – JACKSONVILLE (1-6) at Dallas (5-1)
In the shocker of the week, I am going with the Jags to pull off a massive upset here in Big D.  The Cowboys are coming off a short week, after their tough Monday night game against hated rivals, the Giants.  Plus, they might be looking ahead to a prime time matchup next Sunday night against Green Bay.  This is the quintessential “trap game” for the ‘Boys, and I don’t really trust Wade Phillips enough to avoid it.

1:00 – Miami (3-3) at CINCINNATI (4-2)
The tough schedule just keeps throwing bombs at the Dolphins, as here they get a really solid Bengals team in Cincy.  Any chance that the Bengals could be looking ahead to their matchup with Pittsburgh next week was probably eliminated when they lost to Atlanta last week because now they need the win.  This is a tough one, but I’m going with the Bengals.

1:00 – Buffalo (1-5) at KANSAS CITY (2-4)
The Chiefs are starting to play better, and the Bills stink.  Easy win here for KC at home.

1:00 – Washington (2-5) at DETROIT (1-5)
It’s just about now when the wheels fall off of the Shanahan-McNabb train.  Eight games in eight weeks with an aged QB and ancient RBs could take its toll.  Plus, the Lions are coming off of a bye here.  Just not a good spot for the ‘Skins, who limp into their bye week that probably could have come a couple weeks earlier for this beat up unit.

1:00 – CAROLINA (3-3) at St. Louis (1-6)
Don’t look now, but the Panthers are over .500.  I like them to be able to go into St. Louis and run all over the Rams defense.  Are they contenders?  I guess we’ll see…

1:00 – Green Bay (5-2) at N.Y. JETS (3-3)
I’m not all that high on the Jets, and I am very high on Green Bay, but this is just a really bad spot for the Pack.  The Jets went into the bye week last week smarting from back-to-back losses, while the Packers had an emotional, prime time game with Minnesota and that old QB of theirs.  Plus, the Pack had Dallas next week, so this is quite the trap game for them.

4:05 – Tennessee (4-3) at SAN DIEGO (6-1)
The Chargers keep rolling because this schedule just isn’t that tough.  They get to host the Titans, who are coming off a home loss to the Eagles, and are starting straight at a much-needed bye week.  I like the Bolts at home here.

4:15  – Minnesota (3-3) at NEW ENGLAND (4-2)
It goes from bad to worse for the Vikings, whose early part of the schedule does them no favors.  They have to travel to Foxborough one week after playing the Packers on Sunday Night Football.  Plus, the Pats are probably smarting from a loss in San Diego last week.  Real tough spot for the Vikes, who fall under .500.

4:15 – Tampa Bay (1-5) at ARIZONA (1-5)
Tampa is coming off their first win of the year, they will not get two in a row on the other side of the country.

4:15 – Seattle (1-5) at OAKLAND (5-2)
This is another game where I really wanted to pick against the Raiders, but I just didn’t have enough reasons to do it.  The Seahawks are not very good, so why would they come into the Black Hole and win?  Well, they probably won’t.

8:20 – PITTSBURGH (2-4) at New Orleans (7-0)
An in-tact Steelers team that is up against the ropes here.  A 7-0 Saints team that goes to Carolina next week and then gets their bye.  I’m going out on a limb here and giving this game to the team that needs it more.

Monday, November 1:
8:30 – Houston (4-2) at INDIANAPOLIS (6-0)
Both teams are coming off of their bye, which means this should be a fantastic game.  But, spurred by watching the Saints leave the ranks of the unbeaten the night before, I like the Colts to come out inspired and beat the Texans to continue their dominance of this division.

STANDINGS AFTER WEEK 8
NFC EAST
5-2 Dallas
5-2 Philadelphia
4-3 N.Y. Giants
2-6 Washington

Not a very beastly week for the NFC Beast, as both the Cowboys and Redskins lost, and the Eagles and Giants were on byes.  The race got a lot tighter thanks to the Jacksonville upset of Dallas.

NFC NORTH
5-3 Green Bay
4-3 Chicago
3-4 Minnesota
2-5 Detroit

The AFC East takes down the Packers and the Vikings here this week.  The Bears, idle, are right there for this divisions.  The Lions got a nice win over Washington.

NFC SOUTH
7-1 New Orleans
5-2 Atlanta
4-3 Carolina
1-6 Tampa Bay

A big win for the Falcons, despite being on their bye week, as the Saints lost at home to Pittsburgh (a team that Atlanta has already beaten).  Carolina is quietly staying relevant, as they win their third in a row.

NFC WEST
4-4 San Francisco
2-5 Arizona
1-6 Seattle
1-7 St. Louis

The Niners get the job done in England, while the Cardinals keep pace.  This division is truly terrible.

AFC EAST
5-2 New England
4-3 N.Y. Jets
3-4 Miami
1-6 Buffalo

The Pats and Jets win, while the Dolphins and Bills lose.  This division is shaping up to possibly be a pretty good three-team race if the Jets and Dolphins can stay in it.

AFC NORTH
5-2 Cincinnati
4-3 Baltimore
3-4 Pittsburgh
2-5 Cleveland

Cincinnati and Pittsburgh both get gigantic wins on Sunday.  Just another year in the Black & Blue division.

AFC SOUTH
7-0 Indianapolis
4-3 Houston
4-4 Tennessee
2-6 Jacksonville

The Jags pulled off the biggest upset of the week, beating Dallas in Dallas, while the Colts reemphasized their dominance of this division on national TV Monday night with a win over Houston.  Tennessee lost for the fourth time in their last five games and are quickly fading.

AFC WEST
7-1 San Diego
6-2 Oakland
3-4 Kansas City
2-6 Denver

The story of the season right now is the Raiders and their 6-2 record.  If it’s possible to be an unimpressive 6-2, the Raiders are it, but a win is a win.  The Chargers continue to roll, while the Chiefs are starting to play better football.

BSB NFL Two-a-Days: Week Seven

Week Six is in the books and there is a very small semblance of shape taking form here to this NFL season.  Hopefully, Week Seven here will give us more answers than questions, but you never know in the dog days of October.

BYES: Detroit (1-5), Houston (4-2), Indianapolis (6-0), N.Y. Jets (3-3)

Sunday, October 24:
1:00 – Cincinnati (4-1) at ATLANTA (4-2)
This is, by far, the hardest game of the week to try and predict.  In fact, this may have been the hardest game I’ve had to pick all year thus far.  I like the Falcons and think that they’re a very good team, especially at home, which is why I picked them.  But, what gave me pause is that the Bengals are coming off of a bye, and the Falcons are coming off a really tough game in Philly.  But, in the end, I went with the Falcons here because I believe in Mike Smith’s ability to get the most out of his team, coming off a loss and heading into their bye week.

1:00 – Pittsburgh (2-3) at MIAMI (2-3)
This is a gigantic game for both teams that really need a win at this point in the season.  The Steelers were 1-3 without their QB, so they dug themselves a hole here.  The Dolphins have had some tough sledding, but might be able to right the ship here and get a BIG win.  The Steelers might be looking ahead to next week’s game in New Orleans.  Either way, this game is huge for both teams.

1:00 – Buffalo (1-4) at BALTIMORE (3-3)
Coming off of a really tough game in New England and heading into their bye week, this is pretty much exactly what the Ravens need at this point in their schedule–a home game against a really bad team.  Easy win for the Birdies here.

1:00 – Jacksonville (1-5) at KANSAS CITY (1-4)
And, the vultures are officially circling the Jags, as I think they will go into KC and get yet another loss.  Stick a fork in Del Rio and company–give me the Chiefs here.

1:00 – Cleveland (2-4) at NEW ORLEANS (6-0)
Remember when the Browns were 2-0 and all alone atop the AFC North?  That seems like ages ago, as they have another brutal game–on the road–against the defending champs.  New Orleans, who started 13-0 last year, is off to another great start.

1:00 – Washington (2-4) at CHICAGO (3-3)
Donovan McNabb returns home coming off three straight games against the Eagles, Packers, and Colts.  The Bears, who had an easy win over Seattle at home last week, will pick up another win here, heading into their bye week.

1:00 – San Francisco (3-3) at CAROLINA (2-3)
The dream of the NFC West having a team with a winning record will have to wait a couple more weeks, at least, as the Panthers should get an easy win here against a West Coast team at 1:00.

1:00 – St. Louis (1-5) at TAMPA BAY (0-5)
Not sure who I’d pick on a neutral field, but I’m pretty sure I won’t pick either of these teams to win a road game all year, no matter who they’re facing.

1:00 – PHILADELPHIA (4-2) at Tennessee (4-2)
The Eagles catch a break here, as they get a Titans team that is coming off a tough divisional game on Monday night last week.  And, this is just about the point in the season where the Eagles hit their stride under Coach Reid.

4:05 – Arizona (1-4) at SEATTLE (0-5)
Another team gets off the season schneid here, as the Seahawks should be able to take care of a Cardinals team that might be in shambles by Week Seven.  Yes, the Cards are coming off of a bye, and the Seahawks are coming off of a tough game in Chicago, but I like Pete Carroll to get his first win here against a pretty bad Cardinals team.

4:15 – New England (4-1) at SAN DIEGO (5-1)
In what could turn out to be a very important game for playoff positioning down the road, I like the Chargers to knock off the Patriots in a big game here in late October.  The Chargers are coming off of an easy game in St. Louis, while the Pats just had a war with Baltimore seven days ago.  All the way in the opposite corner of the country, I like the Bolts here.

4:15 – OAKLAND (4-2) at Denver (2-4)
I didn’t want to pick the Raiders here.  In fact, I even wrote up a whole paragraph on why the Broncos would win this game.  But, I changed my mind.  All signs point to Oakland here.  I think the Raiders are the better team, but not enough to overcome the Denver homefield advantage.  But, in looking deeper, we find that the Broncos are coming off of a really physical game with the Jets, and that their next game–next week–is in London.  All that being said, I think that the Raiders can go into Denver and steal one.

8:20 – Minnesota (3-2) at GREEN BAY (4-2)
At home, in prime time, and I honestly think that the Packers have the better football team.  Plus, the Vikings are coming off of a tough game with Dallas.  Both teams have really tough road games next week (Green Bay is at the Jets, while Minnesota goes to New England), but I can just about guarantee that no one is “looking ahead” past this game.  Give me the better team, at home–though I’m not that confident.

Monday, October 25:
8:30 – N.Y. Giants (4-2) at DALLAS (4-1)
Just like the Sunday night game, two rivals are facing off, and you have to go with the better team at home.  Dallas is coming off of a nice win at Minnesota, but I don’t think they’ll have much trouble getting up for a Monday night showdown with the hated G-Men.

STANDINGS AFTER WEEK 7
NFC EAST
5-1 Dallas
5-2 Philadelphia
4-3 N.Y. Giants
2-5 Washington

A big win for the Cowboys on Monday night, and they continue to rule the NFC Beast.  The Eagles have back-to-back nice wins heading into their bye and are nipping at Dallas’s toes.

NFC NORTH
5-2 Green Bay
4-3 Chicago
3-3 Minnesota
1-5 Detroit

The Packers flex their muscles with a nice home win over Minnesota.  The Vikings fall to a tough 3-3, behind Chicago in this division.

NFC SOUTH
7-0 New Orleans
5-2 Atlanta
3-3 Carolina
1-5 Tampa Bay

4-0 for the NFC South this week.  The Falcons pick up the most impressive win, knocking of Cincy, who was coming off of their bye.

NFC WEST
3-4 San Francisco
1-5 Arizona
1-5 Seattle
1-6 St. Louis

Back to a whole division of losing teams, but the Niners, at 3-4, somehow continue to hold more than a full game lead here.

AFC EAST
4-2 New England
3-3 Miami
3-3 N.Y. Jets
1-5 Buffalo

This division just got a lot tighter, as the Pats lose in San Diego, while the Dolphins beat Pittsburgh.

AFC NORTH
4-2 Cincinnati
4-3 Baltimore
2-4 Pittsburgh
2-5 Cleveland

A Cincy loss and a Baltimore win draws the Ravens to within a half-game of the top of the North.  A tough loss for Pittsburgh at Miami, and Cleveland is just about done.

AFC SOUTH
6-0 Indianapolis
4-2 Houston
4-3 Tennessee
1-6 Jacksonville

The Colts and Texans were on byes, while Tennessee and Jacksonville lost.  This is still the Indy division.

AFC WEST
6-1 San Diego
5-2 Oakland
2-4 Kansas City
2-5 Denver

The Raiders keep pace with the Chargers, while Denver drops to last with another loss at home.

BSB NFL Two-a-Days: Week Six

With Week Five in the books, it’s starting to get real interesting around the league.  Week Six is sure to add intrigue to the fire, and with some of the league’s bottom-feeders on their byes, we’ve got some nice matchups, as well.

BYES: Arizona (1-4), Buffalo (1-4), Carolina (2-3), and Cincinnati (4-1)

Sunday, October 17:
1:00 – Miami (2-2) at GREEN BAY (3-2)
The Dolphins are coming off of a bye, so they should be very prepared for the Pack here, but after a loss to Washington last week, it’s hard to imagine that Green Bay doesn’t get it together and find a way to beat Miami here, even if they do have their eyes squarely set on next week’s throw-down with Minnesota.  Plus, mid-October is not quite the same in Green Bay, Wisconsin, as it is on South Beach.  A tough one for the Fish, but I like (but don’t love) GB here.

1:00 – SAN DIEGO (4-1) at St. Louis (1-4)
After a jolt of reality last week delivered by the Oakland Raiders, the Chargers have a nice soft landing in St. Louis to get back to their winning ways, even at 1:00.

1:00 – Baltimore (3-2) at NEW ENGLAND (3-1)
I actually thought about this one longer than you might expect because the Ravens always seem to play the Patriots really tough.  But, in the end, I couldn’t imagine not taking New England, at home, coming off of a bye.  Belichick is too good of a coach to not scheme a victory at home given two weeks to prepare.

1:00 – Cleveland (2-3) at PITTSBURGH (1-3)
Ben is back.  The Steelers are desperate and coming off of their bye.  And, it’s the Browns at Heinz Field.  Must I say more?

1:00 – Kansas City (1-3) at HOUSTON (3-2)
The Texans get a nice draw here heading into their bye week, as KC shouldn’t put up much of a test here at Reliant Field.

1:00 – Detroit (1-4) at N.Y. GIANTS (3-2)
Just what the doctor ordered for the G-Men here coming off of a loss in Houston.  The Giants shouldn’t have any trouble with Detroit here in Week Six, as they get ready for a Monday night showdown with Dallas next week.

1:00 – Atlanta (4-1) at PHILADELPHIA (3-2)
Both teams are coming off of road trips, but the Birds went out west and got beat by San Fran.  The Falcons were able to knock off Cleveland.  I like the Eagles here to get the job done at home because I think that they’re on par with Atlanta’s talent level and play really well at the Linc.

1:00 – Seattle (0-4) at CHICAGO (2-3)
Just when it seemed it couldn’t get worse for Seattle, they lose in Chicago, coming off of their bye week.  I expect the Bears to circle the wagons after a tough loss in Carolina last week.  Playing a West Coast team at 1:00 doesn’t hurt either.

1:00 – NEW ORLEANS (5-0) at Tampa Bay (0-4)
Tampa comes into this game looking for their first win.  They’re still looking.

4:05 – N.Y. Jets (3-2) at DENVER (1-4)
And, the pressure to succeed might be hitting the J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets, right about now, as they only have a short week to prepare for a game in the Mile High City–a tough place to play on regular rest.  This is one that might enrage the New York tabloids.

4:05 – Oakland (4-1) at SAN FRANCISCO (2-3)
Letdown.  The Raiders got a gigantic win last week against San Diego and now they have to go across the Bay to take on a ferocious defense with something to prove.  I like the Niners to take city bragging rights.

4:15 – DALLAS (3-1) at Minnesota (3-1)
A huge NFC showdown that is a rematch of last year’s division playoff round.  The problem for Minnesota here is that they played a brutally physical Jets team just six days prior, so the after-effects of that game might be enough to enable the Cowboys to walk into the Metrodome and leave with a rare opposition victory.

8:20 – INDIANAPOLIS (5-0) at Washington (2-3)
This is a tough one to forecast, but the Redskins got a big home win last week against Green Bay, and I don’t think that they can do it twice in a row here against Indy.  The Colts remain undefeated heading into their bye week.

Monday, October 18:
8:30 – TENNESSEE (3-2) at Jacksonville (1-4)
This is another tough one to predict, but I just kind of think that the loss at Buffalo last week took all the wind from the Jacksonville sails.  Tennessee is coming off a loss to Dallas, but I think can recover to get this one when they need it.  Realistically, I think that the team that is still “in it” when this game rolls around will be the team that comes out on top.

STANDINGS AFTER WEEK 6
NFC EAST
4-1 Dallas
4-2 N.Y. Giants
4-2 Philadelphia
2-4 Washington

The NFC Beast continues to roll on, even though the Redskins slipped up against Indy.  This division is brutal!

NFC NORTH
4-2 Green Bay
3-2 Minnesota
3-3 Chicago
1-5 Detroit

The top two teams flip-flop again, as the Packers take back the top spot.  The Bears get a much-needed win to stay in this thing.

NFC SOUTH
6-0 New Orleans
4-2 Atlanta
2-3 Carolina
0-5 Tampa Bay

A tough loss for Atlanta in Philly opens up a two-game lead for the Saints.

NFC WEST
3-3 San Francisco
1-4 Arizona
1-5 St. Louis
0-5 Seattle

The Niners win again, outside the division, and appear to be, well, running away with this division at 3-3.

AFC EAST
4-1 New England
3-3 N.Y. Jets
2-3 Miami
1-4 Buffalo

Another win for the Pats, but another loss for both Miami and the Jets, as the start to the season couldn’t be any better for New England, considering the expectations out of New York and Miami this year.

AFC NORTH
4-1 Cincinnati
3-3 Baltimore
2-3 Pittsburgh
2-4 Cleveland

Cincy is on a bye, and the Ravens lose to the Patriots.  This enables the Steelers, thanks to their win over Cleveland, to gain ground on the whole division.

AFC SOUTH
6-0 Indianapolis
4-2 Houston
4-2 Tennessee
1-5 Jacksonville

It looks like it’s another banner year for the AFC South–year in and year out, the most underrated division in football.  The Colts are still the class of the group, but Tennessee and Houston are hanging around.

AFC WEST
5-1 San Diego
4-2 Oakland
2-4 Denver
1-4 Kansas City

And, poof, just like that, the Raiders top spot is gone.  The Chargers regroup and win in St. Louis, while the Raiders lose a cross-town battle to San Fran.

BSB NFL Two-a-Days: Week Five

After a lackluster Week Four, Week Five is a little better with some decent matchups.  It’s still a little too early for any “playoff picture,” but it’s definitely desperation time for some teams.

BYES: Miami (2-2), New England (3-1), Pittsburgh (1-3), and Seattle (0-4)

Sunday, October 10:
1:00 – Jacksonville (1-3) at BUFFALO (0-4)
And, the Bills are off the schneid.  This is a real trap game for the Jags, as they are coming off of a home loss to Indy and are looking ahead to a big matchup with Tennessee.  Yes, they are probably desperate, at this point, but I don’t think they are quite good enough to take care of business on the road in such a point of their schedule.  This could effectively end the Jacksonville tenure for one Jack Del Rio.

1:00 – Denver (1-3) at BALTIMORE (2-2)
Despite this being a real trap game for the Ravens, coming off an emotional win at Pittsburgh and looking ahead next week to a trip to Foxborough to face the Patriots, I think that the Ravens are just far too good to lose to the Broncos at home, no matter what situation they’re faced with.

1:00 – Kansas City (1-2) at INDIANAPOLIS (4-0)
The Colts, coming off a nice road win at Jacksonville catch a bit of a break here as they get to host the Chiefs, who shouldn’t provide much of a threat.  The Colts are off and running again, at 5-0.

1:00 – Green Bay (3-1) at WASHINGTON (1-3)
This one was really tough, but I am going with the ‘Skins here for one reason–I think that with Shanahan they have enough pride to see this as a do-or-die situation in their season.  They cannot start 1-4 in a division as good as the NFC Beast, so I think that, somehow, they will get the job done at home against the Pack here.  Again, this is really a tough one, but I’m taking the ‘Skins.

1:00 – St. Louis (1-3) at DETROIT (0-4)
There isn’t a team in the league that I wouldn’t pick to win at home against the Rams coming off their first win of the year.

1:00 – Chicago (2-2) at CAROLINA (1-3)
The Bears, coming off of a Sunday night game in the Meadowlands have to come back to the East Coast here and take on a team that may be down, but still has a decent amount of talent.  I like the Panthers to take care of business at home here against a Bears team that I like, but don’t love.

1:00 – Tampa Bay (0-3) at CINCINNATI (3-1)
I do give a lot of deference to teams coming off of byes, but Tampa on the road at Cincinnati?  Not a chance.

1:00 – ATLANTA (3-1) at Cleveland (2-2)
And, the wheels are falling off of the Cleveland start to the season.  The Falcons are just a better team, and I couldn’t find a reason not to pick them here.

1:00 – N.Y. Giants (3-1) at HOUSTON (2-2)
The Texans were shocked back to reality last week with a loss in Oakland.  The Giants are 3-1, but it hasn’t been an overly impressive 3-1.  I think the Texans have too many weapons to lose a game they need at home to the Giants.

4:05 – NEW ORLEANS (4-0) at Arizona (1-3)
A battle of first-place teams…  What?  It’s true.  Ya, the Saints are a lot better than the Cardinals and should have no problem scoring a ton of points in the desert on this day.

4:15 – Tennessee (3-1) at DALLAS (2-1)
The Cowboys, coming off of a bye (and a loss before that), are hungry and ready to go.  This is a real tough spot for the Titans, as I think Dallas wins easily.

4:15 – San Diego (4-0) at OAKLAND (3-1)
Am I crazy here?  Do I always get sucked into the Raiders?  Maybe and maybe.  But, I think that this just looks like a typical Chargers loss where it’s early in the season, they get all enamored with their own ability and piss one away.  This time it’s on the road against a decent team.  Give me the Raiders–hesitantly.

8:20 – Philadelphia (3-1) at SAN FRANCISCO (1-3)
This is a tough spot for the Birds.  They travel out west for a Sunday night tilt with the Niners, just one week after they hosted the ex-quarterback and the Washington Redskins.  The Niners are just coming off a long road trip to Atlanta, but they should be able to recover and get the job done at home.

Monday, October 11:
8:30 – MINNESOTA (2-1) at N.Y. Jets (3-1)
A fantastic Monday night game caps off a decent Week Five.  I like the Vikes for a couple of reasons.  One, they are coming off of a bye, so they’re had two full weeks to prepare for this prime time matchup.  Two, the Jets are coming off three straight divisional opponents, including back-to-back road wins against the Dolphins and Bills.  And, finally, as much as I hate him (and I really do hate him), Brett Favre usually comes up big when he has something to prove–and he probably really wants to stick it to the Jets.  Give me the Vikes in a big road win on Monday night.

STANDINGS AFTER WEEK 5
NFC EAST
3-1 Dallas
3-2 N.Y. Giants
3-2 Philadelphia
2-3 Washington

The Cowboys go right back on top with a win and a couple of road out-of-conference losses to the Eagles and Giants.  The Redskins are right back in it with a big win over Green Bay.

NFC NORTH
3-1 Minnesota
3-2 Green Bay
2-3 Chicago
1-4 Detroit

The Vikings come off of their bye and take the division lead right back from Green Bay, who slips up in Washington.  A tough loss for the Bears, and they’re in trouble.  The Lions get their first win of the year at home against St. Louis.

NFC SOUTH
5-0 New Orleans
4-1 Atlanta
2-3 Carolina
0-4 Tampa Bay

A nice week for this division, as only the Bucs suffered defeat.  The Saints and Falcons may be dancing this dance all year.

NFC WEST
2-3 San Francisco
1-4 Arizona
1-4 St. Louis
0-4 Seattle

The 49ers pick up the NFC West’s first win of the year against someone outside the division.  And, that win, by itself, might be enough to carry them to a division crown.

AFC EAST
3-1 New England
3-2 N.Y. Jets
2-2 Miami
1-4 Buffalo

The Pats and ‘Phins both had bye weeks.  The Jets suffered a tough Monday night loss, and the Bills actually cracked the win column.

AFC NORTH
4-1 Cincinnati
3-2 Baltimore
2-3 Cleveland
1-3 Pittsburgh

The Steelers get one more week to think about starting their new season, with their QB now, at 1-3.  The Ravens have won three straight, while the Browns have lost three straight.  The Bengals continue to lead this division, though.

AFC SOUTH
5-0 Indianapolis
3-2 Houston
3-2 Tennessee
1-4 Jacksonville

A tough loss for the Jags puts them way behind the eight-ball here.  The Colts continue to roll, while the Titans and Texans meet up again at 3-2, following a Houston win and a Tennessee loss.

AFC WEST
4-1 Oakland
4-1 San Diego
1-3 Kansas City
1-4 Denver

Can it really be true?  The Raiders with their biggest win since the AFC Championship Game all those long years ago have taken over the AFC West lead.

BSB NFL Two-a-Days: Week Four

Somewhere Pete Rozelle is smiling, as we’ve got parity all over the league.  An interesting Week Three left only four undefeated teams heading into the month of October.  However, Week Four isn’t exactly the most interesting slate of games, and for the first time all year, the byes come into play, as four teams will sit this week out.

BYES:  Dallas (2-1), Kansas City (1-2), Minnesota (2-1), and Tampa Bay (0-3)

Sunday, October 3:
1:00 – N.Y. JETS (2-1) at Buffalo (0-3)
The Bills remain winless, as the Jets, coming off a big win at Miami last week, should follow it up with a nice win in Buffalo here in Week Four.

1:00 – CINCINNATI (2-1) at Cleveland (2-1)
The surprising battle for AFC North supremacy amplifies the Battle of Ohio, but I really can’t see the Browns doing anything against the Cincy defense.  I like the Bengals on the road here.

1:00 – BALTIMORE (1-2) at Pittsburgh (1-2)
Maybe the most fortuitous scheduling circumstance of the whole season is the Ravens getting to play their hated arch-rivals, on the road, on the (most likely)last game of Big Ben’s suspension.  Give me the Ravens to take advantage of either the young QB (Dixon) or the old QB (Leftwich) and get a really big victory here in the Steel City.

1:00 – Denver (1-2) at TENNESSEE (2-1)
The Titans continue to beat who is in front of them, as they should improve to 3-1 here.  The Broncos are not very good, so I like the Titans at home here.  I also expect a big day from Chris Johnson here, which is not good considering my Jack-O’s are scheduled to play The Dix in the All in the Family fantasy football league.

1:00 – Detroit (0-3) at GREEN BAY (2-1)
Another tough game for the boys from the Motor City, as going to Green Bay is no picnic, even if the Pack is coming off a tough Monday night loss in Chicago.  I think that, despite the short week, they should be able to rally and win this game at home.  If they were to beat the Bears, maybe they look at this game a little more lightly and be set up for a trap, but since we had the Bears winning last week, the Lions won’t be so lucky.

1:00 – San Francisco (1-2) at ATLANTA (2-1)
The Falcons are probably still smarting from the tough loss at New Orleans last week, but they get another schedule break this week, as they get a West Coast team at 1:00.  The Falcons should be able to get back on track even against a tough 49ers team.

1:00 – Carolina (1-2) at NEW ORLEANS (3-0)
Let down for the Saints after a big win over Atlanta?  Maybe.  A fired up Panther team coming off a home loss to the Bengals?  Maybe.  That is why I hesitated with this pick, but again, the Saints at home are just too tough, and the Panthers on the road just aren’t good enough.  Plus, the main weakness of the Saints is in their secondary, and the Panthers don’t have the weapons to fully take advantage of that.  A tough season continues in Carolina, as the defending champs roll on.

1:00 – Seattle (0-3) at ST. LOUIS (0-3)
Are the Seahawks really in jeopardy of starting 0-4?  I certainly think so.  This is not a great matchup for Seattle, as this is just about the time when Sam Bradford probably will finally feel comfortable with the speed of the game and might be really itching for his first win.  Plus, it’s a 1:00 game for a West Coast team.  I am a bit surprised myself that the ‘Hawks are 0-4, but the schedule plays no favorites.

4:05 – INDIANAPOLIS (3-0) at Jacksonville (1-2)
The Jaguars always play the Colts tough, especially in their place, which is why I went back and forth on this pick several times.  However, I really don’t see much talent on this Jacksonville team, and the Indy offense is a total machine.  They should get enough points to go into Jacksonville and win.  A tough one, but still an Indy victory.

4:05 – Houston (2-1) at OAKLAND (2-1)
This is exactly the game that Houston loses because it is right when their fans start to really believe in this team and then they pull the rug out.  Yes, the Raiders might be looking ahead to San Diego next week, but I still think that, at home, they can win this game.  Either way, I think it will be a good measuring stick for these two possible contenders, but give me the Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaiders, at home.

4:15 – Washington (1-2) at PHILADELPHIA (2-1)
Okay, I’m going to get my one gratuitous slap in here:  Donovan’s return to Philly is easily one of the most important games he’ll ever play in, so he’ll probably throw three picks right before vomiting.  Now, I don’t really believe that, and I would sigh and roll my eyes if I read someone else write that, but whatever, he doesn’t wear my colors any more.  Either way, I think that the Birds are just clearly the better team and won’t lose at home, regardless of the motivation on the other side.

4:15 – Arizona (1-2) at SAN DIEGO (3-0)
The Chargers are just clearly a better team and they’re at home.  I’m not worried about them “looking ahead” to the Raiders next week.  The one thing I am worried about is that this team never starts fast, so 4-0 might be unrealistic, but I can’t really find any losses for them, so we’re gonna go with it.

8:20 – Chicago (2-1) at N.Y. GIANTS (2-1)
The Giants catch a big scheduling break here, as they host the Bears just six day after their emotional Monday night game against the Packers.  On a short week, with that big game behind them, Chicago will probably not be 100%.  That should be all the Giants needs to grab another home win here in Week Four.

Monday, October 4:
8:30 – New England (3-0) at MIAMI (1-2)
The Dolphins always give the Patriots fits, and with their backs against the wall here, I think they’ll pull this one out on a Monday night in Miami.  A lot of NFL games simply come down to which team needs it more, and the Dolphins would certainly need this one more with the respective starts.  So, the Pats will fall from the unbeatens and Miami will crawl back into the AFC East race.

STANDINGS AFTER WEEK 4
NFC EAST
3-1 N.Y. Giants
3-1 Philadelphia
2-1 Dallas
1-3 Washington

The idle Cowboys fall to third place in the NFC Beast, as the Giants and Eagles both jump them.  The ‘Skins fall another game back.

NFC NORTH
3-1 Green Bay
2-1 Minnesota
2-2 Chicago
0-4 Detroit

The Packers take back the North.  The Bears couldn’t consolidate the big win over the Pack last week, as they give one back in the Meadowlands this week.

NFC SOUTH
4-0 New Orleans
3-1 Atlanta
1-3 Carolina
0-3 Tampa Bay

The defending champs are still undefeated.  The Falcons remain undefeated against everyone but the defending champs.  This division was a two-horse race before it started, now it’s just looking more and more official.

NFC WEST
1-3 Arizona
1-3 San Francisco
1-3 St. Louis
0-4 Seattle

I asked last week if it could get any worse in the NFC West, and it did.  The division goes 1-3 this week, with the only win an intra-division win.  The division is now 0-10 in games against other divisions.  Can 6-10 win this division?

AFC EAST
3-1 New England
3-1 N.Y. Jets
2-2 Miami
0-4 Buffalo

A huge win on Monday night for the Dolphins allows the Jets to crawl back into a tie with New England.  Miami is also back into the thick of this race.

AFC NORTH
3-1 Cincinnati
2-2 Baltimore
2-2 Cleveland
1-3 Pittsburgh

A pair of divisional games this week, as Cincy wins the Battle of Ohio and the Ravens win in Pittsburgh.  The Bengals now have a one-game lead over Baltimore and Cleveland, while the Steelers are two back, in last place.

AFC SOUTH
4-0 Indianapolis
3-1 Tennessee
2-2 Houston
1-3 Jacksonville

Tennessee keeps pace with the Colts, as they both win.  Houston has a bad loss to Oakland, falling back to .500 at 2-2.

AFC WEST
4-0 San Diego
3-1 Oakland
1-2 Kansas City
1-3 Denver

The Chargers and Raiders both win, setting up a pretty important Week Five matchup between the two AFC West division leaders.

BSB NFL Two-a-Days: Week Three

With Week Two in the books, we now enter into the third week of the year–and the last week of a full slate of 16 games until Week Eleven, when all the byes have been enjoyed.

Sunday, September 26:
1:00 – Tennessee (2-0) at N.Y. GIANTS (1-1)
The G-Men should get another home win at their new place, knocking the Titans from the ranks of the unbeaten.  The Titans have had a couple good victories so far, but Vince Young in the Meadowlands is not a good recipe for success.  Give this one to the guys in blue.

1:00 – CINCINNATI (1-1) at Carolina (1-1)
I like the Bengals a lot more than most people do this year and, for the first time in recent memory, I’m not that big on Carolina.  I think the Bengals are clearly the better team in this matchup.  However, it wasn’t as easy pick here because the Panthers are pretty solid at home and are coming off a pretty easy home game against Tampa.  Plus, the Bengals had a hard-fought brutal matchup with Baltimore in Week Two.  But, though it’s a pretty tricky spot for the Bengals, I just don’t trust Matt Moore.  Plus, the Panthers may be slightly looking ahead to a date in New Orleans next week.  Give me the Bengals–by a nose.

1:00 – Dallas (2-0) at HOUSTON (1-1)
The Texans always seem to get up for games against the Cowboys.  I think they take this in-state thing personally.  Plus, the Texans have a pretty solid team this year.  Dallas is coming off two tough wins (at Wash in Week One and home against Chi last week).  I think this might be a letdown game for the ‘Boys, heading into their bye week in Week Four.  Wade isn’t exactly the best hard-ass motivator, so they might be taking an early bye week.  Give me the Texans at home in an interesting spot in the schedule.

1:00 – San Francisco (1-1) at KANSAS CITY (0-2)
The Chiefs are on the board here with their first win.  This is also a tough pick because I like the Niners and do not like the Chiefs.  But, it is in KC, at 1:00 for a West Coast team.  Plus, San Fran played on Monday night, so it’s a short week for them to go on the road.  The Chiefs are going into their bye week, which for a coach like Todd Haley might be an advantage, unlike a team coached by Wade Phillips.

1:00 – PITTSBURGH (0-2) at Tampa Bay (0-2)
Fortunately, for the Steelers, one of the game they’ll play without Ben is against the Bucs.  I can’t see the Bucs managing even double-figures in scoring in this game, so Dennis Dixon should be able to get enough to win this game on the road.

1:00 – Buffalo (0-2) at NEW ENGLAND (2-0)
Yawn!

1:00 – Cleveland (2-0) at BALTIMORE (0-2)
I wonder what odds you can get on this matchup being between an undefeated Browns team against a winless Ravens team.  Well, I think that how it’s going to be.  I also think that the Ravens are going to absolutely pummel Cleveland on this afternoon.

1:00 – Detroit (0-2) at MINNESOTA (1-1)
Again, I like the Lions, but am having trouble finding wins for them.  I can’t imagine that they can go into the Metrodome and come away with one.  They should fall to 0-3 here.

1:00 – Atlanta (2-0) at NEW ORLEANS (2-0)
I struggled with this one for a very long time.  In the end, the homefield advantage that the Saints showed last year was just too much to ignore, and I went with them.  I do think that this team is flawed and that the Falcons have a decent shot to win this division.  I also think that this is a good spot for them to steal one, considering it’s a short week for New Orleans, having played on Monday night, and the Falcons just played against a team that isn’t incredibly physical, in Arizona.  But, I still have to go with the defending champs at home…barely.

4:05 – WASHINGTON (0-2) at St. Louis (0-2)
And Donovan McNabb and Mike Shanahan’s first win as Washington Redskins is here in St. Louis.  They aren’t that good, but they are certainly not bad enough to lose to the lowly Rams, right?

4:05 – PHILADELPHIA (1-1) at Jacksonville (1-1)
After a home loss in Week One, I like the Eagles to reel off back-to-back road wins here, capping it with a Week Three win here at Jacksonville.  The Jags are not a good team, and the Eagles should be able to take advantage, even on the road.  Plus, the Jags are coming off a long road trip to San Diego, while the Eagles only had to go play a soft Detroit team.  It should be an interesting coaching week, as both coaches will have to focus their teams on this week and not next week, as the Jags host arch-rival Indy, while the Eagles welcome back Donovan McNabb to the Linc.  It’s a trap game for both teams, and I trust Andy Reid much more than I trust Jack Del Rio in this situation.

4:15 – INDIANAPOLIS (2-0) at Denver (1-1)
Denver’s a tough place to play, generally, but Indy should have no trouble.  The Broncos are not very good.  Gimme the Colts and I’ll lay the points–whatever they are.

4:15 – OAKLAND (1-1) at Arizona (1-1)
This is actually a pretty interesting game between two somewhat bad teams in very bad divisions.  I actually like the Raiders here because I think they might have…gasp…more talent.  Yes, I said it.  I think the Raiders are more talented than the Cardinals this year, and I think that they will go into the desert and steal this one.

4:15 – SAN DIEGO (2-0) at Seattle (0-2)
Another battle between teams from the two worst divisions in the game.  Seattle’s a tough place to play, but the Seahawks are coming off a trip to altitude in Denver and just aren’t very good.

8:20 – N.Y. JETS (1-1) at Miami (1-1)
This is another tough game to try and predict.  I went back a forth a couple times on this one, as well, but in end am going to go with the Jets.  I think that they are a confident–some might say cocky–bunch, but I also think that they can probably back it up when the going gets tough.  They are coming off a tough loss to New England, and I think they can circle the wagons here.  The Dolphins, on the other hand, have the Patriots next week.  This is a really tough one–and one of those games that, even in Week Three could make or break the seasons of both of these teams–but I’m going to go with Rex and the crew.

Monday, September 27:
8:30 – Green Bay (2-0) at CHICAGO (1-1)
I think the Bears might play with a chip on their shoulder this year.  They are getting absolutely no love from the national media, while the Packers and Vikings are everyone’s darlings.  I think that, at home, on Monday night, against their arch-rivals, the Bears get up for this one and come away with a really nice and encouraging victory.  This could be a real momentum swing for the Bears here in Week Three and could bring them to relevance for a while this season.

STANDINGS AFTER WEEK 3
NFC EAST
2-1 Dallas
2-1 N.Y. Giants
2-1 Philadelphia
1-2 Washington

The Cowboys lose and everyone else wins.  This division is, expectedly, going to be fascinating all year.

NFC NORTH
2-1 Green Bay
2-1 Chicago
2-1 Minnesota
0-3 Detroit

And, there is now a three-way tie atop the NFC North, as the Bears knock off the Pack and the Vikings win again.  The Bears win could be big down the stretch if there is ever a tie-breaker situation.

NFC SOUTH
3-0 New Orleans
2-1 Atlanta
1-2 Carolina
0-3 Tampa Bay

The Saints draw first blood in this South war, as they beat the Falcons at home to take control of this division for the time being.

NFC WEST
1-2 Arizona
1-2 San Francisco
0-3 Seattle
0-3 St. Louis

This division is a combined 2-10 through three weeks, with the only two wins coming in the only two intra-divisional games.  I wonder if it can get any worse…

AFC EAST
3-0 New England
2-1 N.Y. Jets
1-2 Miami
0-3 Buffalo

A big win for the Jets over the Dolphins puts them securely in second behind the Pats, who will go for an early division sweep next week against Miami.

AFC NORTH
2-1 Cincinnati
2-1 Cleveland
1-2 Baltimore
1-2 Pittsburgh

Cleveland comes back to earth a little by getting crushed in Baltimore.  The Ravens and Steelers are on the board with their first victories.

AFC SOUTH
3-0 Indianapolis
2-1 Tennessee
2-1 Houston
1-2 Jacksonville

Houston has played Indy, Washington, and Dallas so far, so 2-1 is a pretty great result right now.  The Colts continue to roll, while the Titans slipped up in New York.

AFC WEST
3-0 San Diego
2-1 Oakland
1-2 Denver
1-2 Kansas City

The Raiders get a nice road win, keeping them within a game of the first-place Lightning Bolts.
