Is Joe Blanton worth $24 million over the next 3 years?
Gut reaction for most people is probably not. But I think he’s worth it when you consider the amount of money that starting pitchers make. Blanton will give you 200 quality innings every year, and guys like that just don’t come cheap. It’s not a contract that gets you excited, but three years from now we’ll probably look back and say it was worth it. Plus, it’s difficult for me to be unhappy about a contract extension for any player that was a key member of the 2008 Phillies.
I agree, Doogan. I think people really undervalue innings pitched as a statistic. Well, I guess by “people,” I mean fans because GMs sometimes tend to overvalue it. But, all in all, I agree with what you said in that Blanton’s durability alone is probably worth the $24 million
Is he worth 8 million a year? I’d say probably not. But do I mind the signing? No because as you guys said, he’s a workhorse and a solid third starter, so I don’t mind overpaying him a little to sure up the rotation for the next few years.
