CTC Day 7 Preview

This day is kind of like the middle-Sunday in Wimbledon (yes, only true sports fans get tennis references), as we wind down from week one and enter the extravaganza that is week two of the BSB Conference Tournament Challenge.  So, you can call this day the calm before and after the storm.  And this second storm is, well, about 5 times bigger than the first.  But, let us not ignore the four champions that will be crowned tonight and then the four more semifinal games in interesting conferences.

COLONIAL CHAMPIONSHIP (48 points):
The great CAA tournament is set to close down with a phenomenal championship matchup.  Nine of the twelve CTC entries have their champion still alive, so with 48 points on the line, this could be a pretty big swing game.  And, the CTC MVC title is still in doubt.  An ODU win tonight gives Bry his first CAA title (in the modern era–since ’08, when we started saving the records), while a win by William & Mary gives Alexi his second CAA title in three years.

#1 Old Dominion vs. #3 William & Mary.  Probably the two most impressive regular seasons of anyone in this conference were by these two, even though W&M was technically the third seed, so it is fitting that the auto-bid comes down to these two.  Five entries (Bry, Ina, J, Stri, and Lil Lohse) have Old Dominion for 48 tonight.  Four entries (Doogan, Alexi, Lynch, and KA) have William & Mary for 52 tonight.

WEST COAST CHAMPIONSHIP (32 points):
All bubble teams will be watching intently tonight rooting hard for Gonzaga to knock off St. Mary’s in the WCC final.  St. Mary’s could possibly get in as an at-large, but it’s far from certain, while there is no chance the Zags are left out of the field of 65.  Despite his 11th place standing in the WCC right now, Lynch is the only one with St. Mary’s winning this game, so if he’s right, he will vault over everyone else and win this conference.  If not, Lohse and Teddy will share the 2010 WCC honors.

#1 Gonzaga vs. #2 St. Mary’s.  The big game for fans of St. Mary’s is an even bigger game for fans of Lynch.  He is the only one with St. Mary’s.  Everyone else has Gonzaga in this one.

SoCON CHAMPIONSHIP (16 points):
The most unlikely top-two seeds to meet in the title game are probably the two meeting in tonight’s SoCon championship.  But, it’s the case, as App St. justified their division title and will play for the auto bid tonight in Charlotte.  With no one having App St. to win this game, Stri has locked up the 2010 SoCon title.  The only question is how many points will he have.

#1S Wofford vs. #1N Appalachian St.  Wofford has dominated the SoCon all year long and now they get to make it all worthwhile.  App St. has looked very impressive throughout this tournament and is only one win away from dancing.  Bry, Ina, Doogan, Stri, both Lohses, and Teddy all have Wofford winning tonight.  No one has App St, though J, Alexi, Waters, Lynch, and KA will all be rooting for them to zero out this final.

MAAC CHAMPIONSHIP (16 points):
The Siena Conference has one more chance to make that term a falsehood, as Fairfield (the best MAAC team not named “Siena”) goes to shock Upstate New York tonight in Albany.  Bry is going to win the 2010 MAAC title, but he is one win away from perfection, so the game still means something.

#1 Siena vs. #2 Fairfield.  Can FU do it?  We will see tonight in Albany.  Everyone in the CTC, except Alexi, has Siena winning this title.  Alexi had Niagara, but will be rooting for FU to pull an FU on the rest of the MAAC and CTC fields tonight.

SUN BELT SEMIFINALS (8 points each):
Four teams remain in the craziness that is taking place in Hot Springs this week.  Tonight, the semifinals.  Tomorrow, the finals.

#1 Troy vs. #4 W. Kentucky.  Top-seeded Troy ousted S. Alabama last night, but gets a bigger test today with W. Kentucky.  The Hilltoppers got a game-winner from A.J. Slaughter to beat Arkansas St. yesterday.  They routinely dominate this tournament and will try and do it again this year, though they will need four wins in four nights.  Bry, J, Lynch, and Teddy hope they can, as they all have WKU winning this tournament.  Ina, Doogan, both Lohses, and Stri are all hoping for three wins in three nights and then a loss, as they have WKU winning tonight and going to the finals.  Waters is the only one out of 12 contestants to have #1 Troy winning this game.  He has them winning the tournament.

#2 N. Texas vs. #6 Denver.  The surprise of the Sun Belt this year is Denver, who handily knocked off #3 Middle Tennessee last night.  Now, they get another big test as N. Texas is the foe.  The Mean Green struggled, but took care of business against a feist LA-Monroe squad last night.  No one has Denver winning this game.  J, Doogan, Stri, Waters, Lynch, and KA all have N. Texas winning this game.  Doogan and Stri have them winning it all.

SUMMIT LEAGUE SEMIFINALS (8 points each):
And, after a two-night quarterfinal round, the Summit League is ready for its semifinals.  The top three seeds all advanced (as expected–and predicted by every CTC’er) plus the Cinderella #5 IPFW.  With everyone having the top three in the final four, the rest of the games in this conference are going to produce big swings in points, as everyone diverges from here.

#1 Oakland vs. #5 IPFW.  The first big game is #1 Oakland–who handled UMKC on Saturday–facing IPFW, who upset SD State yesterday.  Lohse and Teddy both have IPFW winning this game.  Lohse has them winning it all.  Stri and KA have already lost this game (SD State).  The other 8 entries have Oakland in the finals.  Bry, Ina, J, Alexi, and Lil Lohse have Oakland winning it all.

#2 IUPUI vs. #3 Oral Roberts.  Oral Roberts barely escaped a big upset yesterday with a one-point, overtime win over North Dakota St.  IUPUI took care of W. Illinois on Saturday rather easily.  This game is huge in the Summit League and the CTC.  Five people (Doogan, Stri, Waters, Lohse, and Teddy) have IUPUI in this game.  The other seven have Oral Roberts.  Doogan, Stri, Waters, and Teddy have IUPUI winning the tournament.  Lynch and KA have Oral Roberts winning the whole thing.

CTC Day 6: Lil Lohse Wins the Day; Bry and Doogan Take Top Two Overall Spots

As Week One comes to a close, Lil Lohse steps up big time to get right back into the mix heading into the major tournaments.  After 196 points on Saturday, he takes it to another level on Sunday with a CTC-best 238 on Sunday.  Bry and Doogan were right behind with 232 and 228, respectively, as they take the top two spots in the overall race.  No one else topped 170 on the day.

DAY 6 SCORES (total days won):
238 – Lil Lohse (1)
232 – Bry (2)
228 – Doogan

610 – Alexi (1)
578 – Lil Lohse (1)
556 – Stri (1)
554 – Lohse

528 – Teddy
522 – Lynch
468 – KA (1)
462 – Waters

MISSOURI VALLEY FINALS (48 points):
Arch Madness comes to a close with yet another great game.  KA just missed on her perfect MVC bracket, as Stri snuck in to take his second straight Valley title.

#1 N. Iowa 67 – #2 Wichita St. 52.  In a game that was much closer than the final score indicated, it looked like WSU was going to pull away.  But, UNI picked up the defense (as they have all season) and took home their second straight Valley trophy.  Stri also took his second straight Valley trophy, as he, Bry, Doogan, and Lil Lohse nailed this champion pick.  Ina, J, Alexi, Waters, Lynch, and KA all missed out on a big 48 points with Wichita St.

FINAL MISSOURI VALLEY STANDINGS (prior MVC titles):
138 – Stri (’09)
120 – Bry
114 – KA
108 – Doogan
108 – Lil Lohse
102 – Ina
96 – J
96 – Waters
90 – Alexi
90 – Lynch
48 – Lohse
18 – Teddy

COLONIAL SEMIFINALS (24 points each):
The best tournament of the first week is now down to two after an absolutely thrilling semifinal double-header in Richmond.  The dulcit tones of Scott Graham described all the action–and it was great.

#1 Old Dominion 73 – #5 VCU 69 (OT).  VCU is so good in Richmond and had this game in hand.  But, ODU battled back, tied it in regulation and won a thriller in OT.  The Monarchs are now one game from the CAA auto-bid.  Lil Lohse, Alexi, Stri, J, Ina, and Bry all had ODU in the finals.  With all of them except Alexi having them winning it.  Doogan, Lynch, Lohse, and Teddy just missed on a big upset pick of VCU.  Lohse and Teddy lost their CAA champions in the process.

#3 William & Mary 47 – #2 Northeastern 45.  Who says low-scoring, offensively-challenged games are not exciting?  This one was about as ugly as it gets on the offensive side, but it was incredibly exciting the whole way.  The Tribe held on to advance to Monday’s finals against ODU.  Stri was the only one with Northeastern winning this game, so he just missed what would have been 24 free points on the rest of the field.  J had already lost this game with Drexel.  Everyone else had W&M in the minor upset.  Doogan, Alexi, Lynch, and KA keep their CAA champion alive in this one.

COLONIAL STANDINGS (prior CAA titles):
144 – Bry
126 – Alexi (’08)
114 – Ina (’09)
96 – KA
96 – Teddy
90 – Lil Lohse
90 – Lohse
84 – Doogan
84 – Lynch
72 – Stri
66 – J
66 – Waters

WEST COAST SEMIFINALS (16 points each):
The top two teams in the WCC entered the tournament, did their jobs and are now heading to the finals.  Ina, Stri, and Alexi lost their dreams of a perfect WCC in 2010.  Bry, J, Doogan, Waters, Teddy, and the two Lohses all correctly nailed both semis.  Everyone had at least one finalist correct.

#1 Gonzaga 77 – #5 Loyola Marymount 62.  The ‘Zags started their postseason with a nice win over LMU (avenging an earlier loss this season), leading from wire-to-wire.  Not that the Zags need it, but they are now one win from the WCC auto-bid.  Everyone except Lynch (who had San Fran) got this one right.  Lynch is the only one that does not have Gonzaga winning this tournament.

#2 St. Mary’s 69 – #3 Portland 55.  In a must-win for St. Mary’s, they got it done against a tough Portland team.  Now, St. Mary’s can ease their bubble anxiety with a win over Gonzaga on Monday.  Otherwise, they will have a long Selection Sunday.  Ina, Stri, and Alexi missed on a nice upset pick of Portland.  Everyone else except KA (who had San Diego) got St. Mary’s.  Lynch keeps his champion alive with this win.

WEST COAST STANDINGS (prior WCC titles; *perfect bracket):
48 – Lohse
48 – Teddy
44 – Alexi
44 – Doogan
44 – Ina (’09*)
44 – J
44 – Lil Lohse
44 – Stri
44 – Waters (’08)
40 – Bry
28 – Lynch
20 – KA

NEC SEMIFINALS (8 points each):
The NEC continued on Saturday, after three days off, with the top 4 seeds in action in a pair of semifinal matchups.  Bry, Doogan, and two-time defending NEC champion Stri remain perfect in the NEC; neither Bry nor Stri have lost an NEC game since ’08.  Waters is the only one to miss both semifinal games.

#1 Quinnipiac 83 – #4 Long Island 78.  The LIU Blackbirds jumped out to a 10-0 lead here on the road, but QU battled back and battled back, finally taking the lead for good with just over 4 minutes to go.  The top-seeded Bobcats improve to 14-0 at home this season and will try and go 15-0 there, as they now host the NEC title game on Wednesday.  Only Waters missed this pick, as he had Monmouth in this spot.  KA, Stri, Doogan, Ina, and Bry all have QU winning this tournament.

#2 Robert Morris 80 – #3 Mount St. Mary’s 62.  The 11-game winning streak for The Mount comes to a screeching halt in Pittsburgh on Sunday, as the Robert Morris Colonials pounded MSM 80-62.  RMC now heads to Quinnipiac for the NEC title game on Wednesday.  Bry, Doogan, Stri, and Lil Lohse got this pick right.  Everyone else had The Mount.  This win was biggest for Lil Lohse, as he has RMC winning this tournament.  J, Alexi, Waters, Lynch, and Teddy all lost the NEC champion in this one.

NEC STANDINGS (prior NEC titles; *perfect bracket):
*32 – Bry (’09*)
*32 – Doogan
*32 – Stri (’08, ’09*)
28 – Lil Lohse
24 – Alexi
24 – Ina
24 – Lohse
24 – Teddy
20 – J
20 – KA
20 – Lynch
8 – Waters

PATRIOT LEAGUE SEMIFINALS (8 points each):
The PL picks up again after four days off, with a pair of semifinal games on PL campuses.  Ina, J, and Doogan were the only three to correctly predict the Patriot League final this year.  Doogan is leading the PL, looking for his second PL title in three years.

#1 Lehigh 79 – #4 American 57.  The top-seeded Mountain Hawks will now get to host the PL final on ESPN on Friday night, as they dispatched the defending tournament champs.  Alexi and KA missed on this nice upset pick.  Everyone else got this right.  Bry, Ina, Stri, Teddy, and the two Lohses all have Lehigh winning this tournament.  KA had American winning it all, so she lost her champion in this game.

#3 Lafayette 66 – #7 Holy Cross 63.  The Crusaders nearly did it again.  Four days after going into Bucknell and eliminating the Bison, they had the lead with less than a minute left, but Lafayette forward Jared Mintz scored 6 points in the final :35 seconds to send the Leopards to Lehigh for a shot at the Big Dance.  Ina, J, Doogan, and Waters all got this one right.  Teddy just missed another huge upset from HC.  J and Doogan keep their PL champs alive in this one.

PATRIOT LEAGUE STANDINGS (prior PL titles):
40 – Doogan (’08)
34 – Teddy
32 – Waters
30 – Ina
26 – J
22 – KA
20 – Lil Lohse
20 – Lohse
20 – Lynch
16 – Bry
16 – Stri
8 – Alexi (’09)

SoCON SEMIFINALS (8 points each):
A double-header in Charlotte gave us the matchup for the Southern Conference final on Monday night, as the two division winners justified their regular seasons by reaching the finals of the conference tourney.  Doogan and Lil Lohse were the only two who correctly predicted this final.  Waters, Lynch, and KA got neither.  Stri finally lost a SoCon game.

#1S Wofford 77 – #2N W. Carolina 58.  The best regular season SoCon team, Wofford, has been no less impressive here in the postseason, as they roll over WCU.  Waters, Lynch, and KA missed a big upset here as they had WCU.  Everyone else had Wofford.  Bry, Ina, Doogan, Stri, both Lohses, and Teddy all have Wofford winning this tournament.  Lynch lost his champion in WCU.

#1N Appalachian St. 77 – #2S College of Charleston 54.  In the game that most surprised me, personally, on Sunday, App St. justified their regular season division title by beating down a very good C of C team in the SoCon semis.  App St. will now play Wofford on Monday night for the auto bid.  Doogan and Lil Lohse were the only two to have App St. going this far, though neither of them have them winning the tournament.  Bry, Ina, J, Stri, Alexi, Waters, Lohse, and Teddy all their finalist in C of C in this game.  J, Alexi, and Waters lost their champions.  This game cost Stri a shot at a perfect SoCon bracket.

SoCON STANDINGS (prior SoCon titles):
46 – Stri
42 – Ina (’08)
38 – Bry
34 – Lil Lohse
32 – Lynch (’09)
28 – Doogan
26 – J
26 – Teddy
24 – KA
22 – Alexi
22 – Lohse
18 – Waters

MAAC SEMIFINALS (8 points each):
In another exciting tournament that has been broadcast live in the Baltimore area, we are all set for the final on Monday night.  Bry was the only one to correctly predict the final in the MAAC, as he keeps his MAAC bracket perfect, and clinches a second consecutive MAAC title.  Everyone had Siena correct, so everyone else has one of the two finalists.

#1 Siena 72 – #5 Rider 62.  In a game that was probably closer than the Saints would have preferred, Rider hung tough with the conference’s #1.  But, in the end, Siena’s talent and experience was just too much for the Broncs.  Everyone got this right.  Only Alexi does not have them winning the whole tournament.

#2 Fairfield 69 – #6 Niagara 63.  Niagara had this game won, but FU just wouldn’t die, led by their freshman point guard Derek Needham and their senior big man, Anthony “Peanut” Johnson.  The Purple Eagles made a nice run, but fell just short here in the semis.  Bry was the only one that had Fairfield winning this one.  Doogan, Alexi, Lohse, and KA all had Niagara in a very nice upset pick.  Alexi had Niagara going all the way, so this one hurt.

MAAC STANDINGS (prior MAAC titles):
*46 – Bry (’09)
34 – Alexi
34 – Lohse
30 – KA
28 – Doogan
24 – Ina
24 – J (’08)
24 – Lil Lohse
20 – Teddy
18 – Stri
14 – Lynch
12 – Waters

AMERICA EAST SEMIFINALS (8 points each):
A semifinal double-header in Hartford gives us the two teams and the location of next Saturday’s Am East championship.  This relatively surprising final was only correctly predicted by Lynch.  Alexi, Waters, and KA got neither finalist.  Only half the field still has their champion alive.

#4 Boston U 70 – #1 Stony Brook 63.  The dream of Stony Brook is shattered by a red-hot BU team in the opener of the semifinal double-header on Sunday.  BU led most of the way and comes away with a finals appearance, after an impressive two days in Hartford.  Bry, J, Doogan, and Lynch all got the BU pick correct.  Teddy, both Lohses, Waters, Alexi, Stri, and Ina missed on Stony Brook.  Teddy lost his champion.  Bry and Doogan kept their champions alive.

#2 Vermont 57 – #6 New Hampshire 38.  After watching #1 Stony Brook go down in the first game, UVM took the floor in the nightcap knowing that they only had to win to get the Am East championship game on their home floor.  And, they did just that, holding the Wildcats to just 27% shooting and 38 points.  Vermont now hosts the title game against #4 BU next Saturday.  Ina, Stri, Lynch, both Lohses, and Teddy all got this Vermont win.  Ina, Lynch, Stri, and the Lohses all have UVM taking the title.  Doogan had UNH in this game, so he missed what would have been 16 free points on the field here.

AMERICA EAST STANDINGS (prior Am East titles):
36 – Doogan
30 – Lynch
30 – Stri
26 – J
20 – Ina
20 – Lil Lohse
20 – Lohse
18 – Bry (’09)
12 – Alexi (’08)
12 – Teddy
8 – KA
8 – Waters

SUN BELT QUARTERFINALS (4 points each):
The great Sun Belt tournament continued on Sunday with four more games in Hot Springs, AR.  Three new teams joined the field after a thrilling quintuple-header on Saturday.  J and Waters were the only two to nail all four quarterfinals.  Everyone got at least two of the four correct.

#1 Troy 67 – #9 S. Alabama 55.  The Troy Trojans grabbed the top seed in the Sun Belt tourney after a 13-5 regular season, so they got to enjoy Saturday off and then got the #9 seeded Jaguars of S. Alabama in the quarters on Sunday.  Troy was slow to get started, but turned it on in the second half to advance to the semis on Monday.  Lil Lohse missed on a good upset pick of USA.  Lohse and Lynch had FAU here, so they missed it too.  Everyone else had Troy.  The win was most important to Waters, who was the only one in the whole field to pick the top-seeded Trojans to win this tournament.

#4 W. Kentucky 65 – #4 Arkansas St. 64.  Arkansas St., fresh off an OT victory on Saturday in the opening round, went down to the wire again in the quarters.  This time, however, they were beat by the more experienced Hilltoppers.  ASU was up 62-56 with less than 2 minutes left, before back-to-back threes by the ‘Toppers Anthony Sally and A.J. Slaughter tied the game.  Undeterred, the Red Wolves turned to their leading scorer, Martavius Adams, who scored with :26 second left to give ASU a 64-62 lead.  But, the veteran Slaughter hit another three, with less than :05 seconds left to win it for the ‘Toppers.  WKU now advances to the semis on Monday to play #1 Troy.  No one had Red Wolves in this one.  Everyone except KA had W. Kentucky.  Bry, J, Lynch, and Teddy can breathe a sigh of relief, as they all have WKU winning this tourney.

#2 N. Texas 69 – #10 LA-Monroe 66.  Another great game where the favorite survived by the skin of its teeth.  LA-Monroe had the lead with less than a minute to go, but the Mean Green rallied to win 69-66 and move on to Monday’s semis.  No one had LA-Monroe winning this game, but Bry, Alexi, and Teddy all had LA-Lafayette, so they were rooting for Monroe to pull off the upset and zero out this game.  It didn’t happen and N. Texas moves on.  Doogan and Stri both have N. Texas winning this tournament, so they are relieved to get the win here.

#6 Denver 73 – #3 Middle Tennessee 58.  After three lackluster performances by the top seeds in the first three games resulted in them barely hanging on, Middle Tennessee put in a poor performance of their own, but was not able to pull it out in the end, as Denver beats up on the #3 seed and co-regular season champs.  Denver advances to the semis, where they will take on N. Texas on Monday night for a spot in the Sun Belt title game.  J, Waters, and KA all nailed this nice upset pick.  Ina, Alexi, and both Lohses all lost their Sun Belt champion.  Teddy and Bry lost a finalist.  No one has Denver going any further.

SUN BELT STANDINGS (prior Sun Belt titles):
38 – J
28 – KA
28 – Waters
22 – Stri
20 – Lohse
18 – Doogan
16 – Ina (’09)
16 – Lil Lohse
14 – Alexi (’08)
14 – Bry
12 – Lynch
10 – Teddy

SUMMIT LEAGUE QUARTERFINALS (4 points each):
The 3- and 4-seeds took the court for their quarterfinals on Sunday, trying to join the top two seeds in the Summit League’s final four.  Since everyone all had the top 3 seeds in this conference advancing (and they all did), the only difference in entries was the 4-5 game.  Those who hit the 4-5 game are perfect; those who didn’t are 3-for-4.

#5 IPFW 71 – #4 South Dakota St. 66.  IPFW breaks the logjam in the Summit League, as they pull off a minor upset of SD State, 71-66.  A back-and-forth game throughout was won by the Mastadons down the stretch to advance them to the Summit League semis and a date with #1 Oakland on Monday night.  J, Stri, Waters, and KA missed this game.  Everyone else nailed it and went perfect in the Summit quarters.  Stri and KA both lost a finalist in this game.  Lohse and Teddy both kept their finalist alive.  Lohse has them winning the title, so this game was huge for him.

#3 Oral Roberts 65 – #6 North Dakota St. 64 (OT).  After opening up a 13-point lead midway through the second half, it looked like ORU was going to cruise the same way the top two seeds did the night before.  But, then, ND State saw their season’s mortality and rose from the dead.  They went on a 16-4 run from about the 9-minute mark to tie it with 1:15 to go.  After ORU went back up with :40 seconds left, the Bison’s Michael Tveidt forced OT with a game-tying jumper.  The OT session was back-and-forth, and ND State had the ball, down one, with :10 seconds left.  They ran a play, but couldn’t get the ball to go down, and the #3-seeded Golden Eagles survive by the narrowest of margins.  No one had this upset, but some have more invested than others.  Lynch and KA have ORU winning the tournament.  Bry, Ina, J, Alexi, and Lil Lohse all have them reaching the finals.

SUMMIT LEAGUE STANDINGS (prior Summit titles; *perfect bracket):
*18 – Alexi
*18 – Bry
*18 – Doogan
*18 – Ina (’08*, ’09)
*18 – Lil Lohse
*18 – Lohse
*18 – Lynch
*18 – Teddy
12 – J
12 – KA
12 – Stri
12 – Waters (’08*)

MAC OPENING ROUND (6 points each):
The MAC’s opening round was played on Sunday at the campus sites, after which eight teams will head to Cleveland for the rest of the tournament Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.  Ina, Lynch, Lil Lohse, and Teddy all nailed all four games on Sunday.

#9 Ohio 85 – #8 Ball St. 77 (OT).  Armond Bassett scored 25 for Ohio, including the OT-forcing basket, as Ohio pulled off the minor upset of Ball St. on Sunday.  The Bobcats move on to face the top-seed, Kent St.  Only Alexi and KA missed this upset pick.  Lohse and Teddy are glad to see it, as they both have Ohio upsetting Kent in the quarters on Thursday.

#5 Buffalo 72 – #12 Toledo 54.  The Rockets of Toledo went 1-15 in the regular season and were given a quick exit here in the conference tournament.  This was a nice tune-up for Buffalo before meeting #4 Miami (OH) on Thursday in Quicken Arena.  No one took the bait on Toledo in this one.  J, Lynch, and Lohse all have Buffalo going to the finals, so this was an important win for their brackets.

#6 E. Michigan 65 – #11 N. Illinois 59.  NIU (a far cry from their national championship days–just go with it, trust me) put up a good fight against EMU, but fell just short in the end, as E. Michigan moves on to Cleveland to face #3 Akron on Thursday in the quarters.  Bry, J, Doogan, and Stri all went for the NIU upset.  Everyone has Akron winning the quarterfinal matchup.

#7 W. Michigan 75 – #10 Bowling Green 73.  The Falcons of Bowling Green led for most of the game, but WMU’s leading scorer, David Kool turned it on, scoring 15 second-half points to get WMU to quarters, where they will meet arch-rival Central Michigan (for the record, I have no idea if they are really rivals, in the same conference, you have to think that Western, Eastern, and Central Michigan all hate each other, right?  I would hate the other two if I was a fan of one of those schools.)  This was a popular upset pick, as only Ina, Doogan, Alexi, Lynch, Lil Lohse, and Teddy went with the favorite.  Most of those who liked W. Michigan in this one also like them in the next round (Ina, Doogan, Alexi, Lil Lohse, and Teddy).  J had Bowling Green in the semis and is the only one to lose a semifinalist before they reach Cleveland.

MAC STANDINGS (prior MAC titles; *perfect bracket):
*30 – Ina
*30 – Lil Lohse
*30 – Lynch
*30 – Teddy
24 – Doogan (’08, ’09)
24 – Lohse
24 – Waters
18 – Alexi
18 – Bry
18 – J
18 – Stri
12 – KA

CTC Day Six Preview

The first Sunday gives out about the same amount of points as the big first Saturday, but they are spread out over fewer games.  So, there can be some really big swings from the results of today.  Let’s get right to it.

MISSOURI VALLEY FINALS (48 points):
One game left in the 2010 Arch Madness.  It was been a good tournament–as always–and we’re left with the best two teams to battle it out for Valley supremacy.  KA is one game away from a perfect bracket in the Valley.  But, if she doesn’t get that win (Wichita St. over N. Iowa), she will not win this year’s title.  If N. Iowa wins, Stri will win the MVC title for the second consecutive year.

#2 Wichita St. vs. #1 N. Iowa.  The best two teams in The Valley taking its grandest stage against one another.  Lohse and Teddy are the only two without a horse in this race, as four entries have N. Iowa (Lil Lohse, Stri, Bry, and Doogan) and six entries have Wichita St. (the rest).

COLONIAL SEMIFINALS (24 points each):
A fantastic quadruple-header in Richmond yesterday saw three great games, including a double-OT thriller.  That sets up another great day of CAA hoops with a semifinal double-header.

#5 VCU vs. #1 Old Dominion.  The first game pits the regular season champion against the defending tournament champs.  VCU knocked off their hated rival, George Mason, in a tough game, while ODU plastered Towson.  This is must-see hoops.  Doogan, Lynch, Lohse, and Teddy all have VCU winning this game, with Teddy and Lohse having them winning it.  Waters and KA have already lost this game, but everyone else has ODU.  Lil Lohse, Stri, J, Ina, and Bry all have the Monarchs winning the tournament.

#3 William & Mary vs. #2 Northeastern.  The nightcap should be another fantastic game.  W&M got a scare from JMU, but that was nothing compared to the double-OT heart attack that NU went through against Hofstra.  But, both teams survived and now they are two wins from Dancing.  Stri is the only entry in the whole field that has Northeastern winning this game.  J has lost this game already (he picked Drexel), but everyone else has W&M.  Doogan, Alexi, Lynch, and KA have W&M going all the way.

WEST COAST SEMIFINALS (16 points each):
After two rounds, the top two seeds finally join the Vegas party.  The WCC welcomes Gonzaga and St. Mary’s to the semifinals of the tournament to face the two survivors of the first two rounds.

#5 Loyola Marymount vs. #1 Gonzaga (12-2).  Gonzaga lost their first conference game in recent memory this year (and their second), but it hasn’t hurt their national profile, as they are still regarded as one of the best teams in America.  They open their WCC tournament tonight against Loyola Marymount.  Everyone has the ‘Zags winning this tournament, except Lynch, who doesn’t have them winning a game (he had San Fran over them this round).

#3 Portland vs. #2 St. Mary’s (11-3).  St. Mary’s, who definitely needs at least one win here in the WCC tournament for their at-large chances.  Two wins (and the auto-bid) would be nice.  Portland, who held on to beat San Diego last night, will be trying to knock them off and get to the finals.  Ina, Stri, and Alexi all have Portland.  KA has already lost with San Diego, but everyone else has St. Mary’s in this one.  Lynch has St. Mary’s winning this whole tournament (the only entry not to have Gonzaga winning it).

NEC SEMIFINALS (8 points each):
After three days off, you almost forget about the NEC.  But, it should be forgotten because it may play a big role as to who gets the upper hand in the first week of the CTC.  With all four top seeds advancing, we’ve got some nice matchups in the semis.

#4 Long Island at #1 Quinnipiac.  Quinnipiac struggled, but held off Monmouth, while Long Island needed a last-second game-winner to beat Farliegh Dickinson.  Now, the Blackbirds head to Quinnipiac to try and earn a shot to play on ESPN for a Dance ticket.  No one has LIU in this one.  Waters, however, has Monmouth, so he’s rooting for Long Island to zero this game out for everyone.

#3 Mount St. Mary’s at #2 Robert Morris.  The Colonials of RMC took care of C. Connecticut St. in the quarters, while MSM hammered St. Francis (PA).  Now, they meet head-on in the semis.  This is a pretty gigantic game, as far as the CTC goes.  Everyone has a dog in this fight, but only four (Bry, Doogan, Stri, and Lil Lohse) have the favored Robert Morris.  The rest have MSM.  Plus, J, Alexi, Waters, Lynch, Lohse, and Teddy all have The Mount winning this thing.  Lil Lohse is the only one with Robert Morris winning the tournament, so he could use a big win here.

PATRIOT LEAGUE SEMIFINALS (8 points each):
The PL has actually sat for four days before continuing what started as a thrilling tournament.  The one upset (Holy Cross) rattled the tournament enough so that only Teddy was able to hit all four quarters correctly.

#4 American at #1 Lehigh.  The Mountain Hawks struggled for 30+ minutes with the 8-seed Army, but eventually Lehigh came through and won by 19.  American struggled all game with a solid Navy team, but ended up pulling it out in the end.  This semifinal pits this year’s regular season champ against last year’s regular season and tournament champ.  Alexi and KA both have American.  Waters has already lost with Navy here.  Everyone else has Lehigh winning this one.  Bry, Ina, Stri, both Lohses, and Teddy all have the Mountain Hawks taking this tournament.

#7 Holy Cross at #3 Lafayette.  The PL’s Cinderellas are the Crusaders of Holy Cross.  After knocking out Bucknell, they now head to Lafayette to try and do the same to Franny O’Hanlon’s crew.  Lafayette knocked off Colgate in the quarters to earn another home game.  Teddy, one of the few to get the first HC upset correct, picked another one for the Crusaders.  Ina, J, Doogan, and Waters have Lafayette winning here.  Everyone else had either Bucknell or Colgate and are out of this spot.  J and Doogan both have Lafayette winning this tournament.

SoCON SEMIFINALS (8 points each):
After two straight days of quadruple-headers in Charlotte, we have the SoCon final four, and it is the top two seeds from each division.  It’s a north vs. south battle in Charlotte on Sunday, where we’ll see if Stri can continue his perfect SoCon bracket.

#2N W. Carolina vs. #1S Wofford.  Top-seeded Wofford took care of UNC-Greensboro yesterday and now get W. Carolina, who struggled to beat Elon on Saturday.  Waters, Lynch, and KA all have W. Carolina winning this game.  Everyone else has Wofford.

#2S College of Charleston vs. #1N Appalachian St.  App St. won the nightcap last night over The Citadel, 71-60, while College of Charleston absolutely crushed Chattanooga 96-69.  Now, they meet head on with a spot in the SoCon finals on the line.  Lil Lohse and Doogan are the only two with App St. winning this game, though neither of them have them winning the tournament.  KA (Chattanooga) and Lynch (The Citadel) have already lost this game.  Everyone else has College of Charleston.  Waters, Alexi, and J all have Charleston winning the tournament.

MAAC SEMIFINALS (8 points each):
Three games left to determine the 2010 MAAC champion.  Yesterday’s quarterfinal quadruple-header had some exciting moment, one minor upset, and one pretty major upset.  Through both rounds, Bry is still perfect, so he will try and continue that in this semifinal double-header.

#5 Rider at #1 Siena.  The Siena Saints actually trailed much of the way against #9 Manhattan, but turned it on at the end and actually won by 17.  Rider led St. Peter’s pretty much the whole way, but now they have a much different animal.  The Saints are the class of the MAAC, and they play the tournament on their home floor.  Everyone in the CTC has Siena winning this game.  Only Alexi does not have Siena winning it all.

#6 Niagara vs. #2 Fairfield.  The Purple Eagles of Niagara pulled off a nice upset yesterday, knocking off #3-seeded Iona, 68-64.  This upset hit many MAAC entries pretty hard.  Fairfield, the #2-seed, took care of business against a feisty Canisius squad.  This game can be pretty important in the grand scheme of the CTC.  Seven entries picked Iona in this spot and, therefore, have already lost.  Four more (Doogan, Alexi, Lohse, and KA) have the big upset pick of Niagara to win this game also and go to the finals.  Bry is the only contestant to pick #2 Fairfield to make the finals.  Alexi actually has Niagara winning the whole thing, so this could potentially be a big game for him.

AMERICA EAST SEMIFINALS (8 points each):
A Sunday double-header in Hartford in the America East will determine the two teams that wait a week for the biggest games of their lives.

#4 Boston U vs. #1 Stony Brook.  Stony Brook, who held on to knock off Albany on Saturday, takes on BU, who absolutely plastered Hartford on their won home floor.  Bry, J, Doogan, and Lynch all have BU in the upset in this one.

#6 New Hampshire vs. #2 Vermont.  The America East slipper resides in New Hampshire.  Today, they get the Catamounts in another tough one.  But, hey, they took out Maine yesterday, so anything’s possible.  Doogan, who nailed the New Hampshire upset yesterday en route to a perfect Am East quarterfinals, has UNH pulling off another one today.  Teddy, both Lohses, Lynch, Stri, and Ina all have UVM in this one.

SUN BELT QUARTERFINALS (4 points each):
After the CTC’s only quintuple-header, the Sun Belt is down to 8 teams left–the 5 winners from yesterday and the top 3 seeds who are coming off of their byes.  Of the five games yesterday, only Stri and J were even able to get four correct, so expect more wildness today in the most interesting low-major tournament of the year.

#9 S. Alabama vs. #1 Troy (13-5).  The Trojans of Troy earned the top-seed in the tournament through a couple tiebreakers, so they get to play #9 USA in their opening game.  The Jags edged Florida-Atlantic by a point yesterday to get themselves to this matchup.  Lynch and Lohse have already lost this game (FAU).  Lil Lohse has USA winning this game in what will be a phenomenal upset pick if he hits it.  Everyone else has Troy.  Waters is the only one to have Troy winning the tournament, so this game means more to him than others.

#5 Arkansas St. vs. #4 W. Kentucky.  Two teams that got here in quite different fashions yesterday.  They both played bad Sun Belt teams, but Arkansas St. needed OT to knock of UALR, while WKU absolutely rolled over New Orleans.  Now they meet in the quarters in the only matchup of teams that both played yesterday.  KA has already lost this game (New Orleans), but everyone else has WKU winning it, so if Arkansas St. wins, KA will have lost nothing with that pick.

#10 LA-Monroe vs. #2 N. Texas (13-5).  The Mean Green of N. Texas catch a bit of a break as they get to play #10 LA-Monroe instead of the very dangerous #7 LA-Lafayette because Monroe took out the Ragin’ Cajuns last night.  N. Texas, clearly one of the favorites to win this tournament, starts their pursuit of the Dance today.  Bry, Alexi, and Teddy have already lost this game with the LA-Lafayette pick, but everyone else has N. Texas, so it’ll be zeroed out with a Monroe win.

#6 Denver vs. #3 Middle Tennessee (13-5).  Denver ended the first season of the Isiah Era at FIU with a 71-64 opening round win late last night, and now they get to take on the #3-seed Middle Tennessee.  The Blue Raiders of MTSU finished in a tie for first in the conference and earned the first-round bye.  They will try and make their second ever NCAA tournament by winning this tournament.  Lynch has already lost this game (FIU) and KA have Denver.  The other 10 entries have Middle Tennessee winning this game.  Ina, Alexi, and the two Lohses all have Middle Tennessee winning the whole tournament.

SUMMIT LEAGUE QUARTERFINALS (4 points each):
After two wins by the top two seeds last night, the Summit continues with the 3-6 and 4-5 matchups here tonight.  (NOTE: sorry about the mixup in yesterday’s preview.  I mixed up the days.).  Everyone got both games yesterday, so everyone has a perfect bracket going into today’s matchups.

#6 UMKC (8-10) vs. #3 Oakland (13-5).  Oral Roberts, a perennial contender in the Summit takes on UMKC in the first quarter of the day.  No one has the Roadrunners in this one.  Lynch, and KA have Oral Roberts winning this whole tournament.

#5 IPFW (9-9) vs. #4 South Dakota St. (10-8).  In the nightcap, two teams with very little program success will battle for the right to play in the semis.  Only J, Stri, Waters, and KA have S.D. State in this one.  KA and Stri both have SD State going to the finals.  Teddy has IPFW in the finals; Lohse has them winning it all.

MAC OPENING ROUND (6 points each):
While the first week tournaments are winding down and the second week tournaments aren’t quite ready to begin, we have an odd start time to the Mid-American conference tournament, with four opening round games on Sunday.  Historically, Doogan has dominated the MAC, missing a perfect bracket in ’08 by one opening round game and winning again in ’09, though last year he shared the title with an equally impressive Ina.  Bry has finished in last place in the MAC in each of the past two years.

(NOTE:  there are still a decent amount of outstanding MAC brackets, so I will wait to preview that until we get most of them in.  I’ll let you guys know when I have updated this part of the ‘preview.’  For the record, I have Ohio, Buffalo, N. Illinois, and Bowling Green.)

CTC Day 5 Recap: Incredible Day for Alexi Gives Us a Brand-New Leader

In the biggest day of the CTC thus far, Alexi had the biggest day of all.  Nearly doubling his score from the first four days combined, Alexi has gone from the middle of the pack to a clear leader.  Ina, J, and Doogan were also over 200 for the day.

BIG SOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP (16 points):
The first conference tournament champion was crowned Saturday afternoon and it was…a three-way tie.  Alexi, Lil Lohse, and KA all had perfect Big South brackets to share the title three ways, taking it from defending champ, Bry, on the last day of the tournament.  Oh, right, and Winthrop won the Big South, but nobody really cares about that.

#3 Winthrop 64 – #1 Coastal Carolina 53.  The Golden Eagles played a perfect game, defensively, and knocked off Cliff Ellis’s Chanticleers on the road to advance to their second tournament in three years.  They did this despite losing their starting point guard to foul trouble and their backup to an injury, so for the majority of the second half, they played an 18-year old freshman point guard who had only played 41 minutes all year, on the road with a shot at the NCAA tournament on the line.  He came in with the game tied and about 10 minutes left.  When he left the game in favor of the foul-troubled starter with just under 4 minutes left, the Eagles had a 14-point lead and were headed to the tournament.  Only in March.  Alexi, Lil Lohse, and KA were the only three that had Wintrhop.  Teddy, Lohse, Lynch, Stri, Doogan, J, and Bry all lost out on the 16 points, as they had CCU.

FINAL BIG SOUTH STANDINGS (prior Big South titles; *perfect bracket):
*54 – Alexi
*54 – KA
*54 – Lil Lohse
34 – Bry (’09)
34 – Doogan
34 – Lohse
30 – Stri (’08)
24 – Ina
24 – Teddy
16 – J
16 – Lynch
12 – Waters

OHIO VALLEY CHAMPIONSHIP (16 points):
The OVC crowned its champion on Saturday and it was a new one, as J took home the 2010 OVC title, stripping it from Lohse’s grasp on the final day.  Lohse had a perfect bracket coming in, but missed the final game.  J, who had only missed one game all tournament, nailed the champion pick and stole the crown.  Both the ’09 champ, Alexi, and the ’08 champ, Bry, had a strong showings, but finished 10 points back.

#1 Murray St. 62 – #2 Morehead St. 51.  The Murray St. Racers let the Selection Committee off the hook by securing the OVC automatic bid.  Otherwise, the Selection Committee would have obviously left them out of an at-large bid, even though they may have been deserving.  But, that is all moot now, as the Racers are dancing.  Lohse and Stri missed out on a big opportunity, as they were the only ones with Morehead winning this tournament (Lohse missed a perfect bracket because of it).  Everyone else, except KA (who had Austin Peay), had Murray St. in this one.

FINAL OHIO VALLEY STANDINGS (prior OVC titles):
50 – J
44 – Teddy
42 – Lynch
40 – Alexi (’09)
40 – Bry (’08)
40 – Doogan
40 – Ina
40 – Waters
38 – Lohse
28 – Lil Lohse
24 – Stri
0 – KA

ATLANTIC SUN CHAMPIONSHIP (16 points):
There was no drama in the A-Sun for the CTC, as no one had either finalist winning this tournament.  No points were awarded, and Bry took home the 2010 A-Sun title.  Two-time defending champion, J, finished 32 points back.

#5 E. Tennessee St. 72 – #6 Mercer 66.  The Cinderella story ends here, as Mercer, a .500 team in the regular season, rode their home crowd to two big wins over co-regular season champs in the first two rounds, but ran out of gas with about 5 minutes to go.  The ETSU Bucanneers are going back to The Dance.  No one had either team, so no points could have been awarded here.

FINAL ATLANTIC SUN STANDINGS (prior A-Sun titles):
54 – Bry
44 – Lynch
32 – Lohse
26 – Alexi
26 – Ina
26 – Stri
26 – Teddy
26 – Waters
22 – J (’08, ’09)
10 – Doogan
10 – Lil Lohse
4 – KA

MISSOURI VALLEY SEMIFINALS (24 points each):
In Arch Madness’s semifinal double-header in St. Louis, we have set up Sunday’s final on CBS.  KA continues to roll in the MVC, nailing both semifinal games, and putting herself one win away from perfection in the MVC.

#1 N. Iowa 57 – #5 Bradley 40.  Defense continues to rule for the Panthers of N. Iowa, as the conference #1 seed moves to the finals on Sunday.  NIU held Bradley (who scored 81 against Creighton the night before) to just 40 points on 33% from the floor.  This is now two nights in a row that the Panthers have held their opponents to a mere 40 points.  In fact, their two opponents are combined 0-11 from the field, with 8 turnovers, in the final 7:00 minutes of the first half.  Alexi and Lynch missed a great opportunity, as they had Bradley winning this game.  Teddy missed on this with Creighton.  Everyone else had NIU winning this game.  The Panthers win was most important for Lil Lohse, Stri, Doogan, and Bry, who all have NIU winning this tournament.

#2 Wichita St. 65 – #3 Illinois St. 61.  In a back and forth game, the Shockers of Wichita St. took control midway through the second half and held on to beat the Redbirds to advance to the finals on Sunday against N. Iowa.  Bry, Doogan, and both Lohses all had Illinois St., so this could have been big for them.  Teddy had already missed this with Missouri St.  Everyone else had WSU.  And, everyone except Stri that has Wichita St. winning this one also has them winning the whole tournament.

MISSOURI VALLEY STANDINGS (prior MVC titles; *perfect bracket):
*114 – KA
102 – Ina (’08)
96 – J
96 – Waters
90 – Alexi
90 – Lynch
90 – Stri (’09)
72 – Bry
60 – Doogan
60 – Lil Lohse
48 – Lohse
18 – Teddy

HORIZON LEAGUE SEMIFINALS (16 points each):
The top two seeds entered the tournament on Saturday and showed why they are, in fact, the top two seeds.  Seven CTC’ers (Teddy, Lil Lohse, Alexi, Doogan, J, and Bry) correctly predicted that the Horizon League finals would be between these two.  Amazingly, Teddy and Doogan are still perfect in this tournament, and they have no clinched a two-way tie for the 2010 Horizon League title.  The only question now is will they finish perfect.

#2 Wright St. 69 – #7 Detroit 50.  The layoff was no problem for the Raiders of Wright St., as they led from almost the opening tip, leading by 21 at the half and winning by 19.  Detroit made a nice run through this tournament, with a pair of upset wins, but the ride ends here.  Lohse missed what would have been a great upset pick in Detroit here.  Teddy, Lil Lohse, Alexi, Doogan, J, and Bry all had the Wright St. pick correct.  No one has either of these two teams winning this tournament.

#1 Butler 68 – #4 Milwaukee 59.  The Butler Bulldogs, on their home floor, do just enough to advance to the Horizon League finals against Wright St. on Tuesday.  They looked sluggish from the beginning, as Milwaukee led for much of the first half, but Butler’s talent was just too much down the stretch.  KA missed on a nice upset pick here of Milwaukee.  Lynch had already missed on Cleveland St.  Everyone else has Butler winning this game and the title game.

HORIZON LEAGUE STANDINGS (prior Horizon champs; *perfect bracket):
*84 – Doogan
*84 – Teddy
76 – Alexi
68 – Lohse
52 – J
48 – Bry (’09)
48 – Ina (’08)
40 – Lil Lohse
32 – Waters
28 – Lynch
24 – KA
24 – Stri

COLONIAL QUARTERFINALS (12 points each):
The great CAA tournament’s best day is the quarterfinal quadruple-header, and this year was no different.  Now that I’ve moved to the Deep South (Baltimore), I get a lot of Colonial games throughout the year, and I get the whole tournament on TV (with the Philly flavor of the great duo of Scott Graham and John Gurovitch calling the action, nonetheless).  Along with Camden Yards, that is one of the best parts about living below the Mason-Dixon line.  Alexi and Teddy (B’more natives) obviously have grown up with this conference, as they both went 4-for-4 in the CAA quarters on Saturday.  And, Alexi went 3-for-4 on the first day, so he is the driver’s seat for the 2010 CAA title.

#1 Old Dominion 86 – #8 Towson 56.  If you can believe it, this was actually a close game for about, well, 6 or 7 minutes.  Then, the Monarchs showed everyone why they won the CAA regular season, as they blew the doors off of Towson the rest of the way.  This was the only blowout of the day.  KA had Towson in the upset pick (she had them going to the finals), but everyone else had ODU.

#5 VCU 75 – #4 George Mason 60.  The defending tournament champs in the CAA, VCU, won a really good game against arch-rivals George Mason.  The score didn’t show nearly as close of a game as it was.  The Rams, who are just so tough in Richmond, move on to face #1 Old Dominion in the semis.  KA, Lil Lohse, Waters, and Stri all had George Mason in this one.  Waters actually had them winning the whole thing.  The VCU win was biggest for Lohse and Teddy, as they both have the Rams repeating in the CAA.

#2 Northeastern 74 – #7 Hofstra 71 (2 OTs).  In the best game of the day–anywhere–#2-seeded Northeastern survived, barely, against #7 Hofstra.  The Flyin’ Dutchmen had chances to win in regulation and the first OT, but missed a tying three at the end of the second OT.  A great win for Northeastern and their star, Matt Janning, as they move on the CAA semis.  Teddy, Alexi, and Stri were the only three that had the favored Huskies in this one.  Stri is the only one that has them winning again on Sunday.  Everyone else had Hofstra in what would have a been a really nice upset.  No one had Hofstra in the finals.

#2 William & Mary 70 – #11 James Madison 65.  JMU almost did it again.  One night after shocking Drexel in the opening round, the Dukes gave #3 William & Mary all they could handle for 40 minutes on Saturday night.  The Tribe, however, made just enough plays down the stretch to advance to a semifinal date with Northeastern.  J (who had Drexel winning here) was the only one of the 12 entries not to have W&M winning here.  In fact, four entries (Doogan, Alexi, Lynch, and KA) have the Tribe winning this whole thing.  Stri (Northeastern) and J (Drexel) are the only two that do not have W&M reaching the finals.

COLONIAL STANDINGS (prior CAA titles):
90 – Bry
72 – Alexi (’08)
66 – KA
66 – Teddy
60 – Ina (’09)
60 – Lohse
54 – Doogan
54 – Lynch
48 – Stri
42 – J
36 – Lil Lohse
36 – Waters

WEST COAST QUARTERFINALS (8 points each):
The WCC added two more teams to the fray to take on Friday’s winners, LMU and San Diego.  Ina, Stri, and Alexi remain perfect through Saturday (interestingly, though, all three that are perfect, have the same picks the rest of the way as well, so they will either win or lose together).  Ina hasn’t missed a WCC game since 2008 (when she finished second place).

#5 Loyola Marymount 84 – #4 San Francisco 76.  The Lions of LMU continue to honor the 20-year memorial of the late, great Philadelphian Hank Gathers with a second straight win in the WCC tournament.  The USF Dons had a nice season, but could not come through at the end and will go home.  LMU now moves on the semis on Sunday night to play the vaunted Gonzaga Bulldogs.  Ina, Stri, and Alexi all had this upset pick correct.  Everyone else, except Waters, had USF here.  Lynch took the biggest hit here, as he had USF going to the finals.

#3 Portland 72 – #6 San Diego 57.  San Diego, trying to make something of their very disappointing season, beat Santa Clara on Friday, but fell short against a very solid Portland team on Saturday.  The Pilots now move on to face #2 St. Mary’s in the semifinals on Sunday.  KA was the only one with San Diego here, so she missed an opportunity to gain ground on the whole field.  She also lost future points, as she had USD winning this tournament.  Everyone else had Portland.  Ina, Stri, and Alexi were the happiest to see the Pilots win, as they all have them in the finals.

WEST COAST STANDINGS (prior WCC titles; *perfect bracket):
*28 – Alexi
*28 – Ina (’09*)
*28 – Stri
16 – Lohse
16 – Teddy
12 – Doogan
12 – J
12 – Lil Lohse
12 – Lynch
12 – Waters (’08)
8 – Bry
4 – KA

SoCON QUARTERFINALS (4 points each):
The SoCon had their quarterfinal quadruple-header in Charlotte on Saturday, and, somewhat surprisingly, all four of the top seeds advanced–all by double-figures.  Stri and Lil Lohse went 4-for-4 in the SoCon on Saturday.  Stri’s bracket remains perfect.

#1S Wofford 59 – #4N UNC-Greensboro 47.  The top seed in the SoCon opened their postseason with a business-like win over UNC-Greensboro.  Waters missed what would have been a great upset pick in UNC-G.  KA had already lost this with Furman.  Everyone else got the Wofford pick correct.  Seven entries have Wofford going all the way.

#2N W. Carolina 68 – #6N Elon 57.  Down early, the Catamounts of W. Carolina took control with about 12 minutes to go in the first half and never looked back.  They will move on to face top-seeded Wofford in the semis on Sunday.  Teddy, Lohse, Alexi, and Doogan all had Davidson here, but everyone else had WCU.

#1N Appalachian St. 71 – #4S The Citadel 61.  The league’s leading scorer, Donald Sims, dropped 30 on the The Citadel, as App St. (who was the surprise winner of the northern division) moves on the conference semis.  Five entries (Bry, Ina, J, Lynch, and KA) all had The Citadel in this upset pick.  Everyone else had App St.  Doogan and Lil Lohse have App St. going further than anyone else, as they each have them in the finals.  Lynch had The Citadel in the finals.

#2S College of Charleston 96 – #3N Chattanooga 69.  The Cougars opened their postseason by plastering the Mocs of Chattanooga.  Charleston now moves on to face App St. in the semis.  KA missed on this nice upset pick; everyone else had C of C.  Waters, Alexi, and J all have the Cougars winning this tournament.

SoCON STANDINGS (prior SoCon titles; *perfect bracket):
*38 – Stri
34 – Ina (’08)
32 – Lynch (’09)
30 – Bry
24 – KA
18 – J
18 – Lil Lohse
18 – Teddy
18 – Waters
14 – Alexi
14 – Lohse
12 – Doogan

MAAC QUARTERFINALS (4 points each):
The MAAC had their quarterfinals in Albany on Saturday, and Alexi, Lohse, and Bry were all tuned in, as they nailed all four picks.  Defending MAAC champion, Bry, actually still has a perfect MAAC bracket here in ’10.  Waters and Lynch struggled, only getting one right on Saturday.

#1 Siena 78 – #9 Manhattan 61.  The top-seeded Saints flexed their muscles in the second half and beat Manhattan by 17.  The Jaspers did give them a run for it in the first half, but ran out of gas.  Everyone had Siena in this game.  Alexi is the only one that doesn’t have them winning this tournament, so he’s looking for an upset at some point along the way.

#5 Rider 69 – #4 St. Peter’s 57.  The Broncs of Rider were pretty impressive in knocking off a pretty decent Peacocks squad from St. Peter’s.  Rider now moves on the semis to face the top-seeded and host school, Siena.  This was a popular upset pick, as only Doogan, Waters, and Lynch had the favored Peacocks.  No one had either of these teams going any further than this game.

#2 Fairfield 67 – #7 Canisius 57.  The Golden Griffins of Canisius put in a solid effort, but fell just short against FU.  Fairfield, the #2-seed, got a career-high 29 points from Derek Needham to lead them to the semifinals on Sunday.  This was another somewhat popular upset pick, considering it would have been a big one, as Lynch, Teddy, and KA all had Canisius in this one.  Throw in the fact that Waters and Stri both had Marist winning this game, and you’ve only got 7 entries that had this pick correct.  Bry is actually the only one to have FU going to the finals.

#6 Niagara 68 – #3 Iona 64.  In one of the biggest (and most meaningful as far as the CTC goes) upsets of the day, the Purple Eagles of Niagara edged Iona by 4 in the MAAC nightcap.  Niagara now advances to the conference semis to take on #2 Fairfield.  This was a nice upset pick by KA, Lohse, Alexi, Doogan, and Bry.  Losing Iona was a big loss to several brackets.  No one had Iona winning this tournament, but Ina, J, Stri, Waters, Lynch, Lil Lohse, and Teddy all had them going to the finals.  Keeping Niagara alive was big for Lohse (who has them in the finals) and huge for Alexi, who has them winning it all.

MAAC STANDINGS (prior MAAC titles; *perfect bracket)
*30 – Bry (’09)
26 – Alexi
26 – Lohse
22 – KA
20 – Doogan
16 – Ina
16 – J (’08)

AMERICA EAST QUARTERFINALS (4 points each):
The America East kicked off on Saturday.  Usually, the Am East has a play-in game to whet the appetite before the quarterfinal quadruple-header, but Binghamton’s indiscretions cost us all that luxury, so we just dove right into the Am East on Saturday with every eligible team in action.  Doogan and Stri nailed the conference, going a perfect 4-for-4.  Defending champion Bry really struggled, going just 1-for-4.  Also interesting is the immense variety of America East champions among the 12 contestants.  Each of the top 4 seeds had at least two entries with them as champs, and no team was picked by more than 4 people (2 for Stony Brook, 4 for Vermont, 4 for Maine, 2 for BU).

#1 Stony Brook 68 – #8 Albany 59.  Top-seeded Stony Brook struggled for a while, but pulled away late against the Great Danes of Albany, who was swept by everyone in the conference except UMBC.  Bry and Lynch took a shot at this upset and came up short.  This was an important survival for Teddy, who is the only two with SB winning this tournament.

#4 Boston U 87 – #5 Hartford 46.  In maybe the most surprising result of the day–not the winner, but the amount by which they won–the BU Terriers absolutely destroyed the host school, Hartford, in the second quarter of the day.  BU will try and carry this momentum into Sunday’s semifinal against top-seeded Stony Brook.  Even though this was a 4-5 game in Hartford, the upset point only swared KA to pick the underdog Hartford in this one.  Bry and Doogan were especially happy to see the BU victory, as they have them winning this tournament.

#2 Vermont 76 – #7 UMBC 59.  Two years after dominating the Am East and then surprising the whole conference with a finals appearance last year, the Retrievers bowed out early in this year’s tournament, as Vermont beat them pretty bad.  The Catamounts are now two wins away from another NCAA appearance.  Bry and Waters both took UMBC to win this game.  The win of UVM is important to Ina, Lynch, Stri, and both Lohses, who have the Catamounts winning the Am East.

#6 New Hampshire 68 – #3 Maine 57.  In the game that rocked the CTC America East, UNH capped off the quarters with a big upset of the Maine Black Bears.  Doogan and Stri both nailed this upset.  And, it was most important for Doogan, who has UNH winning again and going to the finals.  Maine going out crushed many Am East brackets.  J, Alexi, Waters, and KA all have the Black Bears winning this tournament.  Bry has them in the finals.

AMERICA EAST STANDINGS (prior Am East titles; *perfect bracket):
*22 – Doogan
*22 – Stri
12 – Alexi (’08)
12 – Ina
12 – J
12 – Lil Lohse
12 – Lohse
12 – Teddy
8 – KA
8 – Lynch
8 – Waters
4 – Bry (’09)

SUMMIT LEAGUE QUARTERFINALS (4 points each):
The Summit League started on Saturday with the top two seeds playing their quarterfinal games.  They both won, and everyone had them both, so, well, nothing to report.  Back to you…

#1 Oakland 85 – #8 UMKC 70.  Oakland, the top-seed, showed how they won the regular season title with an all-business 15-point win over the Roadrunners of UMKC.  Everyone had Oakland in this one.  Bry, Ina, J, Alexi, and Lil Lohse all have Oakland winning this tournament.  Stri, KA, Teddy, and Lohse wouldn’t have minded an upset here, as they all have Oakland losing in the semis.

#2 IUPUI 77 – #7 W. Illinois.  In the nightcap, IUPUI had a little more trouble, but ended up winning by 9 over W. Illinois.  Again, everyone had this pick.  Teddy, Waters, Stri, and Doogan all have IUPUI winning this tournament.  Lynch, Alexi, J, Ina, Bry, Lil Lohse, and KA wouldn’t have minded an upset here, as they all have IUPUI losing in the semis.

SUMMIT LEAGUE STANDINGS:
everyone has 8 points

BIG SKY QUARTERFINALS (4 points each):
The Big Sky opened their conference tournament Saturday with two games in two different corners of Montana.  Despite one big upset, Bry, Ina, Doogan, Lynch, both Lohses, and Teddy all nailed both games on Saturday.

#4 Montana 81 – #5 N. Arizona 60.  First, in Missoula, the Grizzlies hammered the NAU Lumberjacks.  This game wasn’t close from the start, and the Grizzlies move on to face top-seeded (and host school) Weber St. in the semifinals.  Only KA had NAU in this game, and it was a big loss, as she had the Lumberjacks winning this tournament.  Lohse was happy to see this result, as he has Montana winning this tournament.  Lil Lohse is the only other entry that has Montana beating Weber in the semis.

#6 Portland St. 68 – #3 Montana St. 65.  The big upset came on the other side of the state, in Bozeman, as the MSU Bobcats were stunned by a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Melvin Jones to give Portland St. the road win and get them to Weber for the semis, where they will play the #2-seed N. Colorado.  Bry, Ina, Doogan, Lynch, both Lohses, and Teddy all got this upset correct.  The biggest winner, though, was Lohse, who has Portland St. winning again in the semis.

BIG SKY STANDINGS (prior Big Sky titles; *perfect bracket):
*14 – Bry
*14 – Doogan
*14 – Ina (’08)
*14 – Lil Lohse
*14 – Lohse
*14 – Lynch
*14 – Teddy
4 – Alexi
4 – J (’09)
4 – Stri
4 – Waters
0 – KA

SUN BELT OPENING ROUND (2 points each):
The only quintuple-header of the CTC took place in two different arenas in Hot Springs, AR, on Saturday.  No one hit all five games, but J and Stri went 4-for-5 on the day.  Bry, Ina, Lynch, and KA all got three wrong.

#9 S. Alabama 52 – #8 Florida-Atlantic 51.  Brian Sherrer’s game-winning shot with :04 seconds left ended FAU’s season and allowed USA to move on the quarterfinals with a shot at #1 Troy.  Bry, J, Stri, and Lil Lohse had this minor upset pick.  Lil Lohse got the important win because he has USA beating Troy in the quarters.  Lohse and Lynch lost the most in this game, as they had FAU beating Troy in the quarters.

#5 Arkansas St. 89 – #12 AR-Little Rock 82 (OT).  In what would have been a big upset for several CTC brackets turned into just a nice OT victory for a team that no one has going anywhere.  KA, Lohse, J, Ina, and Bry all missed on this upset.  Everyone else had Ark St.  No one has either team going past the quarters.

#4 W. Kentucky 83 – #13 New Orleans 56.  The Hilltoppers, a popular pick for the CTC’ers, stomped UNO on Saturday.  WKU now will get Arkansas St. in the quarters on Sunday.  Only KA lost this game, but she lost more than just a game, as she had the Privateers winning the Sun Belt.  Bry, J, Lynch, and Teddy all have the Hilltoppers winning the Sun Belt.

#6 Denver 71 – #11 Florida-International 64.  The end of Isiah: Year 1 at FIU  came a lot earlier than FIU fans would have liked.  After a terrible regular season, they give #6 Denver a good game, but fall short, ending a miserable season.  Denver will now get #3 Middle Tennessee in the quarters on Sunday.  Bry and Lynch missed this upset pick, but Lynch lost more, as he had FIU winning two games this tournament.  KA and Waters are especially happy to see Denver survive, as they have the Pioneers beating Middle Tennessee in the quarters.

#10 LA-Monroe 76 – #7 LA-Lafayette 75.  The nightcap of this thrilling quintuple-header lived up to the whole day’s action.  LA-Lafayette’s Lamar Roberson hit a jumper with just :02 seconds left in the game to give the Ragin’ Cajuns a 75-73 lead, but Tony Hooper (who had 30 points on the night) buried a game-winning three at the buzzer to eliminate Lafayette and propel Monroe into the quarters to face #2 N. Texas.  KA, Lohse, and J nailed this upset pick, though none of them have Monroe going any further.  Teddy, Bry, and Alexi were hit hardest by Hooper buzzer-beater, as they all have the Ragin’ Cajuns going to the semis.

SUN BELT STANDINGS (prior Sun Belt titles):
16 – J
12 – Lohse
10 – KA
10 – Stri
8 – Lil Lohse
6 – Alexi (’08)
6 – Bry
6 – Doogan
6 – Teddy
6 – Waters
4 – Ina (’09)
4 – Lynch

CTC Day Five Preview

The biggest day of the first week of the CTC is a phenomenal day.  If you like basketball, you LOVE this day.  With all the games to preview, let’s get right to it.

BIG SOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP (16 points):
This game was supposed to give us the first tournament team, but Cornell ruined the party last night by clinching the Ivy League’s auto-bid.  Either way, one of these teams will be dancing.  We are also guaranteed three perfect Big South brackets, we’re just not sure which three contestants will get it.

#3 Winthrop at #1 Coastal Carolina.  Winthrop is coming off a big win over Radford in the semis and now they get to play the host Chanticleers with a trip to the Big Dance on the line.  If C. Carolina wins, Bry will be a repeat Big South champion, but will have to share the title (and perfect bracket) with Doogan and Lohse.  J and Stri also have UCC, so though they won’t get the title, 16 points would be nice.  If Winthrop wins, then the ’10 Big South title (and perfect bracket) will go to Alexi, Lil Lohse, and KA.

OHIO VALLEY CHAMPIONSHIP (16 points):
The second auto-bid of the day will be given to MSU…we just don’t know which one.  Murray St. has dominated the OVC all season, but Morehead St. is the defending champion and has almost the whole team back.  This should be a fantastic game.  Lohse wins the OVC (with a perfect bracket) if Morehead St. pulls off the minor upset.  If Murray St. wins, J will take the ’10 OVC title.

#2 Morehead St. vs. #1 Murray St.  Morehead has dominated the first two rounds of this tournament, winning by 33 and 29, respectively.  Murray St., who hammered Tennessee St. in the quarters, struggled with E. Illinois in the semis.  KA is the only one that cannot score points with this game, as she had Austin Peay.  Lohse and Stri have Morehead, the other nine entries have Murray St.

ATLANTIC SUN CHAMPIONSHIP (16 points):
If I told you to predict the A-Sun championship (which 12 of us tried to do), I bet you’d get it wrong (which all 12 of us did).  Only slightly more than half of the 12 CTC’ers even had one of the two teams right playing in today’s title game.  With all of the scoring over, Bry is going to take the A-Sun title away from two-time champ, J.

#5 E. Tennessee St. at #6 Mercer.  With none of the four co-champs from the regular season in the final game, it should be interesting.  ETSU only finished a game behind the leaders, so they are in the same class, but Mercer was 4 games back.  However, Mercer is on their home floor and that has led them to wins over Belmont and Jacksonville in the past two nights.  ETSU struggled with the Cinderella of the tourney, Kennessaw St., in the semis, but they are here and one game from the Dance.

MISSOURI VALLEY SEMIFINALS (24 points each):
Two big games for CTC purposes, as a 3x conference goes into the semifinals, where the games start to be worth a lot of points.

#5 Bradley vs. #1 N. Iowa.  Bradley looked very impressive yesterday in their quarterfinal win over #4 Creighton, but now they have a much bigger test, as the top-seeded Panthers of UNI come calling in the first of the semifinal double-header.  Only Teddy is out of the running for points here, as he had Creighton winning this game.  Lynch and Alexi both have Bradley winning here, which would be really impressive if they can get that one.  The other nine have UNI.

#3 Illinois St. vs. #2 Wichita St.  Two really solid teams that pulled off good, tough wins last night meet today in the second semifinal of Arch Madness 2010.  This game also has major CTC implications other than just the straightforward 24 points.  Teddy is the only one that cannot win points in this one, as he had Missouri St. winning this game.  Both Lohses, Bry, and Doogan have Illinois St. in the minor upset.  The other seven have Wichita St.  But, there’s more.  Lohse has Illinois St. winning this whole tournament.  And, six (Ina, Alexi, Waters, Lynch, J, and KA) have Wichita St. winning it all.

HORIZON LEAGUE SEMIFINALS (16 points each):
The Horizon League finally welcomes its best two teams to the party, as, with six teams already eliminated, #1 Butler and #2 Wright St. play their first tournament action.

#7 Detroit vs. #2 Wright St. (12-6).  Detroit won a tough game on the road at Valpo and then knocked off the 3-seed Green Bay last night to get a shot to go at Wright St.  Lohse, who not only has Detroit getting here, but he has them beating Wright St., which would be an incredible call.  Bry, J, Doogan, Alexi, Lynch, Lil Lohse, and Teddy all have Wright St.  The rest of the field has already lost this game by picking either Green Bay or Valpo in this spot.

#4 Milwaukee at #1 Butler (18-0).  Undefeated in conference play and nationally-ranked, Butler got a double-bye to the semis AND they get to play the rest of the tournament on their home floor.  The Horizon takes care of its best.  Lynch has already last this game (Cleveland St.).  KA has Milwaukee in this game.  The other 10 contestants have Butler not only in this game, but winning this tournament.

COLONIAL QUARTERFINALS (12 points each):
One of my favorite days of the year is the CAA quarterfinal quadruple-header.  It is great basketball by solid teams, usually led by good seniors who have played together for four years (something that is becoming more and more rare in the big conferences).  Also, as far as the CTC goes, there are a lot of points at stake out there.

#8 Towson vs. #1 Old Dominion (15-3).  The first game pits the conference’s best team in the regular season, ODU, against a relatively hot Towson team that beat UNC-Wilmington pretty handily yesterday.  KA is the only one that went for this big upset pick, as she has Towson.  Everyone else has ODU.  Bry, Ina, J, Stri, and Lil Lohse all have more at stake, as they have the Monarchs winning this tournament.

#5 VCU vs. #4 George Mason (12-6).  While everyone will talk about Duke-UNC and Villanova-West Virginia, the game that I’m probably most looking forward to on this first Saturday in March is VCU-George Mason.  Two excellent programs with solid teams, playing with their seasons on the line–winner moves on, loser goes home.  Stri, Waters, KA, and Lil Lohse have the favored Mason squad.  The other eight all have VCU winning this game.  Lohse and Teddy have the most at stake here with VCU, as they have them winning the tourney.  Doogan and Lynch have VCU in the finals.  Waters has that equal investment in George Mason.

#7 Hofstra vs. #2 Northeastern (14-4).  The CTC’ers favorite, Hofstra, barely squeeked by Georgia St. last night, but they did survive.  Now, they get to play Northeastern in the first game of tonight’s double-header.  Only Stri, Alexi, and Teddy have Northeastern.  The other nine have the big underdog, Hofstra.  Stri is the only one in the whole Challenge that has Northeastern, the #2 seed, making the finals, so this is a big game for him because he can pick up a lot of free points by NU just surviving against lower-seeded teams.

#11 James Madison vs. #3 William & Mary (12-6).  The one big surprise of the opening round in the CAA was the same big surprise as last year’s opening round.  The JMU Dukes knocked off Drexel and now get the Tribe of W&M.  Everyone has William & Mary in this game, except J (who had Drexel).  But, some have more invested in W&M than others.  Alexi (because they beat Maryland, undoubtably), KA, Lynch, and Doogan have the Tribe winning this tournament.

SoCON QUARTERFINALS (4 points each):
After a relatively interesting opening round, the SoCon gets more interesting as the best four teams join the fray in Charlotte.

#6N Elon vs. #2N W. Carolina (11-7).  The opening game was supposed to feature Davidson, but they got upset by Elon yesterday, so it is Elon versus W. Carolina.  Doogan, Alexi, Lohse, and Teddy all had Davidson winning this game.  The other eight entries have W. Carolina.  Lynch has WCU winning this tournament; Waters and KA have them reaching the finals.

#4N UNC-Greensboro vs. #1S Wofford (15-3).  The conference’s best team in the regular season, Wofford, opens their postseason with UNC-Greensboro, who edged Furman by a single point yesterday.  Waters could pull off a huge upset here, as he has UNC-Greensboro winning this game.  KA had Furman winning this game, so she’s out of this one.  Everyone else has Wofford here.  Teddy, both Lohses, Stri, Doogan, Ina, and Bry all have Wofford winning this tournament.

#4S The Citadel vs. #1N Appalachian St. (13-5).  Yesterday, The Citadel only scored 55 points against a bad Samford team, but won on their defense.  Now, they get the northern division champs, Appalachian St.  Bry, Ina, J, and Lynch all have The Citadel in the big upset.  Lynch went a step further and took them to go to the finals.  Doogan and Lil Lohse have the most invested in App St., as they both have them making the finals (no one has them winning it).

#3N Chattanooga vs. #2S College of Charleston (14-4).  The Mocs of Chattanooga crushed Georgia-Southern last night.  They will try and carry that momentum into today’s quarterfinal matchup with the College of Charleston.  CofC had a nice regular season, including a win over UNC (which started the Tar Heels demise), but they fell a game back of Wofford and had to settle for the 2-seed from the south.  KA is the only one that has Chattanooga in this one.  In fact, she has them winning this whole tournament, so she could pick up some major points, if they keep winning.  Waters, Alexi, and J have CofC winning this whole tournament.  Bry, Ina, Stri, Lohse, and Teddy all have them going to the finals, but not winning it.

MAAC QUARTERFINALS (4 points each):
After the opening round double-header last night, the MAAC is ready to really get going with its quarterfinal quadruple-header in Albany.

#5 Rider (9-9) vs. #4 St. Peter’s (11-7).  The opening game of the day is Rider against the Peacocks of St. Peter’s.  This is a big toss-up game in the CTC, but mainly only for these four points.  Everyone has Siena in the finals, so no one has either of these teams winning more than this game.  Nine entries have the minor upset pick with Rider, only Doogan, Waters, and Lynch have the favored Peacocks.

#9 Manhattan at #1 Siena (17-1).  Manhattan surprised everyone with a win over Loyola last night, but now they have to come back a day later and take on the conference powerhouse, Siena.  Everyone has Siena winning this game and the next.  In fact, only Alexi does not have Siena winning this whole tournament, so any loss by the Saints would be good for him, even if he has them winning that particular game.

#7 Canisius vs. #2 Fairfield (13-5).  Canisius beat up on the lowly Marist Red Foxes last night, and now they get #2 Fairfield in the quarters.  Stri and Waters both had Marist winning this game, so they’ve already lost it.  Lynch, KA, and Teddy all have Canisius in this pretty major upset.  Bry is the biggest Fairfield fan, as he is the only one with FU reaching the finals.

#6 Niagara (9-9) vs. #3 Iona (12-6).  The Iona Gaels had a really nice season, while the Purple Eagles of Niagara must have been disappointed with their .500 record in-conference.  This is a shot at glory and/or redemption for these two programs.  Bry, Doogan, Alexi, Lohse, and KA all have Niagara in this upset.  KA, Lohse, and Doogan have them going all the way to the finals.  Alexi has them winning it all.  Everyone who has Iona winning this game also has Iona winning the next game and reaching the finals.

AMERICA EAST QUARTERFINALS (4 points each):
(NOTE: because of the mix up with the America East bracket, there are still a couple entries that have not been made in the A-East, so this is subject to change.)
The crazy America East gets going today without Binghamton, who is on probation (shocking) from last year’s transfer debacle.  So, the 9-team tournament because a much more streamlined 8-team tournament.  The quarters and semis will be in Hartford this weekend, then the championship will be next Saturday on the home court of the higher seed.  Bry, riding his alma mater UMBC, is the defending America East champ, while Alexi won it back in ’08.

#8 Albany (2-14) vs. #1 Stony Brook (13-3).  Stony Brook won their first ever America East regular season title, and now they start their attempt at their first Am East tournament title.  They start with the Great Danes of Albany.  Only Bry picked Albany in this upset.  Currently, only Teddy has Stony Brook winning this tournament.

#4 Boston U. (11-5) at #5 Hartford (6-10).  The Terriers of Boston U take on the host school, Hartford in the quarterfinals.  We saw with Mercer how much the home fans can help a middling conference team in the tournament, so BU should be careful.  Despite that, though, only KA took the Hawks with this upset.  She did have Hartford going to the finals.  Bry and Doogan actually have BU winning the whole thing; J has them going to the finals, but losing.

#7 UMBC (3-13) vs. #2 Vermont (12-4).  The Retriever Believers were tested this year, as UMBC had a very difficult season.  They get one reprieve, though, as they start the Am East conference tournament tonight against UVM.  The Catamounts had yet another solid season and are a real contender to win another Am East title.  Bry and Waters still believe, as they have UMBC pulling off this big upset.  Both Lohses have put their faith in UVM, picking them to win this tournament.

#6 New Hampshire (6-10) vs. #3 Maine (11-5).  And, the nightcap of the Am East quadruple-header features the #3-seeded Maine Black Bears.  They get UNH in the final quarterfinal.  So far, only Doogan has picked New Hampshire to win this one.  J, Alexi, Waters, and KA all have Maine winning this tournament, making Maine the most popular title pick in the America East this year.

WEST COAST QUARTERFINALS (4 points each):
After two thrilling opening round games last night, the WCC welcomes two more teams to the tournament for a quarterfinal double-header.

#5 Loyola Marymount vs. #4 San Francisco (7-7).  LMU avoided an upset against Pepperdine yesterday and now will take on the Dons from San Francisco.  Ina, Stri, and Alexi all have LMU in this game.  Waters had Pepperdine.  Everyone else has San Fran.  Lynch has a lot at stake here, as he has USF in the finals.

#6 San Diego vs. #3 Portland (10-4).  USD edged Santa Clara late last night, and now they get a good Portland team today.  Everyone has Portland winning this game, except KA, who has San Diego (which she has going to the finals).  Ina, Stri, and Alexi all have Portland in the finals.

SUMMIT LEAGUE QUARTERFINALS (4 points each):
The Summit League has two quarterfinal double-headers this weekened before the semis on Monday and the final on Tuesday.  Today starts with the 4-5 and 3-6 games.  Ina and Waters both had this league perfect in ’08, then Ina defended her title last year, sharing the title with Doogan and Stri.  She will go for a three-peat this year.

#8 UMKC (6-12) vs. #1 Oakland (17-1).  Oakland dominated the Summit League and goes to cap off the season with a trip to The Dance.  They open with the Roadrunners from UMKC.  Everyone has Oakland in this game.  Bry, Lil Lohse, Alexi, Ina, and J all have Oakland winning it all.

#7 W. Illinois (6-12) VS. #2 IUPUI (15-3).  Another great season for Ron Hunter’s Jaguars of IUPUI.  They open their postseason run tonight against W. Illinois.  Everyone has IUPUI in this game.  Teddy, Waters, Stri, and Doogan have IUPUI winning this tournament.

BIG SKY QUARTERFINALS (4 points each):
The Big Sky kicks off with a pair of first round games on the home courts of the Montana schools.  Bry and Ina shared the ’08 Big Sky title, while J absolutely dominated last year’s.  In fact, J’s 30 points last year were 18 more than second place and 30 more than Stri, Waters, and Lynch who completely struck out in this conference.

#5 N. Arizona (8-8) at #4 Montana (10-6).  The Grizzlies of Montana host the Lumberjacks tonight in the Big Sky quarterfinals.  Montana had a real shot at the #2-seed and, therefore, the bye, but they did hang on to the #4-seed, which means they get to play this first game on campus.  Someone is going to lose their Big Sky champion in this one, as Lohse has Montana winning the tournament, and KA has N. Arizona winning it all.  KA is the only one who picked N. Arizona in this game.  Lil Lohse is the only one other than Big Lohse that has Montana reaching the finals.

#6 Portland St. (7-9) at #3 Montana St. (10-6).  The other Montana school actually finished ahead of the Grizzlies grabbing the #3-seed, which means they get to host Portland St. tonight in the quarters before a date with N. Colorado in the semis.  The 3-seed means they get to avoid #1 Weber St. until the finals.  A lot of people picked against Montana St.  In fact, only J, Stri, Alexi, Waters, and KA took the home favorites tonight.  J and Stri have them going to the finals.  Lohse has Portland St. in the finals, so he’s looking for an upset tonight and another one on Tuesday.

SUN BELT OPENING ROUND (2 points each):
My absolute favorite 1x conference tournament is the Sun Belt.  It’s probably just because they are the only conference in the country to have 5 conference tournament games on the same day.  And, that got even better this year, as they moved the entire tournament to the neutral site in Hot Springs, AR.  So, there are ten teams in action in one place today and then 8 more tomorrow in the quarters.  Phenomenal!  Ina took down the Sun Belt title a year ago; Alexi won it in ’08.

#9 S. Alabama (8-10) vs. #8 Florida-Atlantic (10-8).  FL-Atlantic had a shot at the conference title until they lost a couple down the stretch, dropping them to the #8 seed.  S. Alabama has been in the national spotlight with a solid program, but they are in a down year, finishing 9th in the Sun Belt.  The two will play in the opening round for the right to play the top-seeded Troy Trojans.  Lil Lohse, J, Bry, and Stri all have USA in the upset.  Lil Lohse actually has the Jags going all the way to the semis.  Lynch and Lohse are the biggest FL-Atlantic fans, as they have FAU beating Troy in the next round.

#12 Arkansas-Little Rock (4-14) vs. #5 Arkansas St. (11-7).  The battle of the Natural State pits Arkansas St. against a disappointing Arkansas-Little Rock team.  Surprisingly, half of the field (Bry, Ina, J, KA, and both Lohses) took the bait of the big upset points and took UALR in this one.  None of them have Little Rock moving on next round.  And, somewhat of a surprise is that no one has Arkansas St. even making the semis.

#13 New Orleans (3-15) vs. #4 W. Kentucky (12-6).  One of the headlines of the best nicknamed conference in the country is the Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky.  They open their postseason against the New Orleans Privateers.  Everyone except KA has WKU winning this game…and then some.  All 11 people that picked WKU in the first round also picked them in the quarterfinals.  Then 10 of those 11 (with Waters being the only exception) have WKU reaching the finals.  Then, in the finals, the bandwagon loses a little steam, as only Teddy, Lynch, J, and Bry have the Hilltoppers finishing the job and winning this tournament.  KA will be trying to ride the #13-seeded Privateers all the way to the Sun Belt title (and an ABSOLUTE TON of points).

#11 Florida-International (4-14) vs. #6 Denver (10-8).  “I would pick against FIU if they were playing the Ugandan women’s pre-pubescent retarded intramural softball league for midgets.”  A direct quote from Stri (a die-hard Knicks fan) on how hard his decision was to pick for or against the Isiah Thomas-coached FIU Panthers.  Needless to say, Stri has Denver in this one moving on to face Middle Tennessee in quarterfinals.  But, Bry and Lynch apparently did not pay any attention to the Isiah Era in New York, as they both have FIU pulling off this upset.  Lynch actually think that Isiah can take his Panthers to the semifinals.  KA, Waters, and J all have Denver making the semis.

#10 LA-Monroe (6-12) vs. #7 LA-Lafayette (10-8).  As good as a nickname as the Hilltoppers is, the Ragin’ Cajuns might be the best in the country.  They take on LA-Monroe in the first round before a date with the #2 N. Texas Mean Green.  J, Lohse, and KA all went against Lafayette in this one, though none of them have Monroe over N. Texas next round.  Teddy, Alexi, and Bry all have LA-Lafayette beating Monroe tonight and then N. Texas tomorrow to reach the semis.

CTC Day 4 Recap: Bry Wins Second Straight, Takes Overall Lead; Alexi, KA, and Ina All Move Up As Well

The storm is here.  Friday is great; Saturday will be better.  The big story, big-picture-wise, is that after three days in the lead, Lohse has given up the lead to Bry.  Lohse has actually slipped down to a tie for 4th, as there were some really nice days for Alexi, KA, and Ina, as well.  But, for all of you who have been through this competition before, you know full well that we are not even close to having anything figured out yet.  We’re probably not even close to the “quarter-pole” of this competition.  Remember, the majority of the points doled out are going to be next week when the major tournaments (worth 5x more than the minor tournaments) get going.  Last year’s winner had well over 2000 points, so we’re probably about 1/8th of the way there.  There is still SOOO much room for movement.

DAY 4 SCORES (days won):
146 – Bry (2)
142 – KA
140 – Alexi
136 – Ina
116 – Lynch (1)
110 – Stri
104 – Teddy
102 – Lohse (2)
98 – Waters
90 – Doogan
90 – J
64 – Lil Lohse

OVERALL STANDINGS:
272 – Bry
248 – Alexi
242 – KA
238 – Ina
238 – Lohse
226 – Lynch
218 – Teddy
212 – Doogan
196 – Stri
184 – J
178 – Waters
144 – Lil Lohse

MISSOURI VALLEY QUARTERFINALS (12 points each):
In, by far, the biggest point “purse” of the CTC so far, there is a quadruple-header of quarterfinal games in a 3x conference on Friday.  A LOT of points were handed out in St. Louis on Friday.  Three MVC entries remain perfect (Alexi, KA, and Lynch), while Teddy has struggled and is now eliminated from any points left to give out in the final two rounds of the MVC.

#1 N. Iowa 55 – #8 Drake 40.  The Panthers of N. Iowa struggled a bit in the first half, but flexed their muscles in the second half to show The Valley who the team to beat is, beating Drake by 15.  Everyone except Teddy had N. Iowa winning this game.  Bry, Doogan, Stri, and Lil Lohse keep their Valley champion alive.

#5 Bradley 81 – #4 Creighton 62.  A close one-point game at the half turned ugly in the second half as the Braves crushed the Blue Jays in the second half (not the ’92 World Series).  Bradley will now move to to face the top-seed N. Iowa in Saturday’s semifinal.  KA, Lynch, Alexi, J, Ina, and Bry all got the Bradley upset.  Alexi and Lynch now have a shot at correctly picking Bradley to go to the finals.

#2 Wichita St. 73 – #7 Missouri St. 63.  After about 35 minutes of back and forth, Wichita St. finally pulled away and ended Missouri St.’s season with a 73-63 win Friday night in St. Louis.  Teddy, Doogan, and Bry all had Missouri St. in this one, and Lohse had Evansville.  The other eight entries had it right.  Teddy lost his MVC champion in this one.  Ina, J, Alexi, Waters, Lynch, and KA all keep their champion alive in this one.

#3 Illinois St. 69 – #6 Indiana St. 65.  In a nip and tuck game all the way through, the Redbirds of Illinois St. hold off the Sycamores by 4, setting up a semifinal date for them with Wichita St. on Saturday.  Only Ina and J got this one wrong, and neither of them had Indiana St. going any further.  Lohse is the most happy with this win, as he has Illinois St. winning this whole tournament.  Bry, Doogan, and Lil Lohse are also happy because they have Illinois St. in the finals.

MISSOURI VALLEY STANDINGS (prior MVC titles; *perfect bracket):
*66 – Alexi
*66 – KA
*66 – Lynch
54 -Ina (’08)
48 – Bry
48 – J
48 – Waters
42 – Stri (’09)
36 – Doogan
36 – Lil Lohse
24 – Lohse
18 – Teddy

ATLANTIC SUN SEMIFINALS (8 points each):
After a wild quarterfinal round in the A-Sun, it will be interesting to see if the clock strikes midnight on a couple of Cinderellas tonight.  It was a pair of great games in Macon, GA, Friday night and the A-Sun final pairing is set.

#5 E. Tennessee St. 69 – #8 Kennessaw St. 64.  Midnight did come for “the other KSU,” but not without giving another top-division team a scare.  KSU had the ball, down 3, with :08 seconds to go, but a three from Markeith Cummings missed, and ETSU held on to set a date with the ESPN cameras in the A-Sun final on Saturday.  Bry, Ina, Stri, Alexi, Waters, Lynch, and Teddy all have the Bucs in the finals, but no one has them winning it.

#6 Mercer 66 – #2 Jacksonville 63.  Another thrilling game, but this time the Cinderella story is going to continue, as the home Mercer squad knocked off Jacksonville to advance to tomorrow’s final against E. Tennessee St.  No one had Mercer going this far, so one night after they dealt a huge blow to everyone who had Belmont going far in this tournament, they now competely bail them out.  No one has either ETSU or Mercer winning this tournament, but half the field had Jacksonville, so the scoring in the A-Sun is completely finished.

ATLANTIC SUN STANDINGS (prior A-Sun champs):
54 – Bry
44 – Lynch
32 – Lohse
26 – Alexi
26 – Ina
26 – Stri
26 – Teddy
26 – Waters
22 – J (’08, ’09)
10 – Doogan
10 – Lil Lohse
4 – KA

OHIO VALLEY SEMIFINALS (8 points each):
A semifinal double-header in Nashville took place Friday night to decide the 2010 OVC finalists.  With the top two seeds advancing, nine out of the twelve all nailed this finals matchup.  KA is the only that did not get either one.  Lohse is one game away from a perfect OVC bracket.

#1 Murray St. 55 – #4 E. Illinois 51.  The Racers are now just one win away from topping off their fantastic regular season with 30 wins and a spot in the Big Dance.  It wasn’t easy, but they held off a game E. Illinois squad for a date with the ESPN crew.  Only KA missed this game.  Most of the field has Murray St. winning this tournament.

#2 Morehead St. 76 – #6 Tennessee Tech 47.  Just when Murray St. was feeling good about themselves, the defending champs went out and gave them something to think about while the try and sleep the night before playing for the OVC title.  Led by the leading rebounder in the nation, Kenneth Faried, Morehead blew the doors off of Tennessee Tech to advance to Saturday’s final.  Everyone except KA, Lil Lohse, and Lynch had Morehead in the finals.  Lohse and Stri have Morehead beating Murray in the finals, so this win is especially good for those two.

OHIO VALLEY STANDINGS (prior OVC titles; *perfect bracket):
*38 – Lohse
34 – J
28 – Teddy
26 – Lynch
24 – Alexi (’09)
24 – Bry (’08)
24 – Doogan
24 – Ina
24 – Stri
24 – Waters
12 – Lil Lohse
0 – KA

HORIZON LEAGUE QUARTERFINALS (8 points each):
Just a two-game quarterfinal round in the Horizon League, since the top two seeds get byes all the way to the semis, but it wasn’t devoid of intrigue.  Doogan, Lohse, and Teddy all nailed both of these picks, and all three remain perfect in the Horizon.

#7 Detroit 62 – #3 Green Bay 53.  The madness continues here in the Horizon, as the Titans of Detroit pulled off their second straight upset here in the Horizon League tournament, this time knocking off Green Bay 62-53.  The Titans now move on to Saturday’s semifinal against #2 Wright St.  Surprisingly, four contestants (Doogan, Alexi, Teddy, and Lohse) actually had Detroit pulling off back-to-back upsets.  Lohse actually has them pulling off one more and going to the finals.  Ina lost a finalist in Green Bay; KA lost her champion.

#4 Milwaukee 82 – #5 Cleveland St. 75.  In a well-played, hotly-contested nightcap, UW-Milwaukee held on to beat defending champion Cleveland St. and advance to the semis on Saturday against #1 Butler.  Ina, J, Doogan, Waters, Lohse, KA, and Teddy all got this one right.  KA has Milwaukee in the finals, so this was a nice win for her.  The big blow from this one was felt by Lynch, who had Cleveland St. repeating as Horizon champs.

HORIZON LEAGUE STANDINGS (prior champs; *perfect bracket):
*52 – Doogan
*52 – Lohse
*52 – Teddy
44 – Alexi
32 – Ina (’08t)
24 – KA
20 – J
16 – Bry (’09)
16 – Waters
12 – Lynch
8 – Lil Lohse
8 – Stri

COLONIAL OPENING ROUND (6 points each):
The best tournament of the first week kicked off Friday with a quadruple-header in Richmond.  KA was the only one to nail all four picks.  J lost a finalist in the carnage of the opening round.

#8 Towson 91 – #9 UNC-Wilmington 74.  Pat’s Cats continue their hot streak and knock off UNC-Wilmington in the opening round, earning themselves a date with Old Dominion in the quarters on Saturday.  Towson was never threatened all day, shooting over 50% from the floor and dropping 91 on the Seahawks.  Ina, Alexi, Waters, Lohse, and KA all got this right.  KA was the big winner because she has Towson in the finals.  No one had UNC-Wilmington going any further than this one.

#5 VCU 66 – #12 Delaware 49.  Mercifully, the 2009-2010 season comes to an end for the Fightin’ Blue Hens of Delaware.  An extremely disappointing season ends at the hands of the VCU Rams on Friday afternoon.  VCU moves on to a must-see quarterfinal matchup with George Mason on Saturday (fortunately, it is on TV in the Baltimore area tomorrow around 2:30).  Only Waters had Delaware pulling off the upset, and he didn’t have them going any further.  The VCU win was most important for Lohse and Teddy, who both have the Rams winning this whole tournament.

#7 Hofstra 68 – # 10 Georgia St. 67.  If Greg Washington doesn’t hit a running jumper with :16 seconds left, many CTC’ers would be up in arms.  But Washington did hit the runner, and Hofstra did hold on to win by a single point.  The team formerly known as the Flying Dutchmen now move on to the quarterfinals and a date with #2 Northeastern.  No one had Georgia St. in this one, and nine of the twelve contestants have Hofstra over Northeastern in the next round.  Fortunately for those nine, there are no style points awarded in the CTC.  It’s all about the W’s.

#11 James Madison 77 – #6 Drexel 65.  In the exact same position last year, the Drexel Dragons had a great regular season only to drop a couple close games late, fall to 6th, play James Madison in the 6-11 game on opening night, and just like last year, they lose.  JMU now advances to Saturday night’s nightcap against #3 William & Mary.  Bry and KA are the only two that had JMU in this one.  Neither of them had them going any further.  J had Drexel in the finals, so this one hurt.

COLONIAL STANDINGS (prior CAA titles; *perfect bracket):
*54 – KA
48 – Bry
18 – Alexi (’08)
18 – Ina (’09)
18 – Lohse
12 – Doogan
12 – J
12 – Lil Lohse
12 – Lynch
12 – Stri
12 – Teddy
12 – Waters

WEST COAST OPENING ROUND (4 points each):
The opening round of the WCC took place late Friday night in Sin City, as the 5- through 8-seeds took part in a double-header.  Five CTC’ers (Ina, Stri, Alexi, Lohse, and Teddy) got both games correct.  Only Bry missed them both.

#5 Loyola Marymount 87 – #8 Pepperdine 84.  Vernon Teel and Ashley Hamilton played the roles of Hank Gathers and Bo Kimble, as they dropped 27 and 23, respectively, and LMU held off a game Pepperdine team.  Marymount now advances to the semifinals, where they will play San Francisco for the right to take on #1 Gonzaga in the semis.  Bry, Waters, and KA got this one wrong.  Waters paid the biggest price, as he had Pepperdine in the semis.  Alexi, Stri, and Ina all keep LMU alive, which they have in the semis.

#6 San Diego 61 – #7 Santa Clara 59.  Santa Clara’s Robert Smith (a frequent contributor to this blog…wait, there’s another Rob Smith?) had 16 points for the Broncos, but missed a shot at the buzzer that would have forced overtime, so San Diego gets to move on and play Portland in the quarters on Saturday.  Bry, J, Doogan, Lynch, and Lil Lohse all missed on this upset pick.  None of them had Santa Clara going any further.  KA held onto her San Diego pick, as she has them going all the way to the finals.

WEST COAST STANDINGS (prior WCC titles; *perfect bracket):
*8 – Alexi
*8 – Ina (’09*)
*8 – Lohse
*8 – Stri
*8 – Teddy
4 – Doogan
4 – J
4 – KA
4- Lil Lohse
4 – Lynch
4 – Waters (’08)
0 – Bry

SoCON OPENING ROUND (2 points each):
The SoCon kicked off its 12-team tournament today with an opening round quadruple-header in Charlotte.  It was an interesting day of north vs. south matchups, in which the seemingly inferior northern division actually took three of four from their southern division foes.  Ina and Stri each went 4-for-4 in the SoCon.  Doogan took the collar with an 0-for-4 performance.

#6N Elon 66 – #3S Davison 59.  No Stephen Curry?  No postseason success for Davidson as the Wildcats fall in a tough one to a team that only won 5 conference games all year.  Elon, with the big upset, will advance to Saturday’s quarterfinal matchup with Western Carolina.  Five contestants  (KA, Lynch, Stri, Ina, and Bry) nailed this pretty major upset pick.  None of them, though, have them going any further.

#4N UNC-Greensboro 66 – #5S Furman 65.  Now, I don’t know much about sports and scoring and whatnot, but does this make sense?  So, Amu Saaka hits a three-pointer for Furman with :13 seconds left to cut the Greensboro lead to 65-63.  The Paladins quickly foul, hoping for a missed free throw.  They get it, as the Greensboro shooter hits one of two.  So, Furman comes down the floor and with :03 seconds left, Saaka pump-fakes a three, drives past his defender for a dunk…with :00.8 seconds left.  Did he forget that dunks were only worth two points?  Either way, UNC-Greensboro holds on to beat Furman 66-65.  They will advance to the quarters on Saturday to play top-seeded Wofford.  The field was just about split on this game, but the one who lost the most was KA, who had Furman beating Wofford and moving to the semis.  Waters has the potential to gain the most from this game because he has Greensboro beating Wofford in a big upset.

#4S The Citadel 55 – #5N Samford 43.  A pretty routine 12-point win for a solid Citadel team, which advances them to Saturday’s quarterfinal matchup with Northern Division champion, Appalachian St.  Doogan was the only one who took the upset point bait and went for Samford on this one.  KA, J, and Bry all have The Citadel in the semis, so this win is good for them.  It’s even better for Lynch, who has them in the finals.

#3N Chattanooga 82 – #6S Georgia-Southern 62.  And the nightcap in the SoCon’s opening day turns out not to be much of a contest, as the Mocs roll over GA-Southern, setting up a quarterfinal tussel with the College of Charleston.  Bry, Doogan, Alexi, and both Lohses all went for GA-Southern in this one.  No one, no matter who they picked winning this game, has College of Charleston losing in the second round, so this was merely a one-round pick.

SoCON STANDINGS (prior SoCon titles; *perfect bracket)
*22 – Ina (’08)
*22 – Stri
20 – KA
20 – Lynch (’09)
18 – Bry
6 – J
6 – Teddy
6 – Waters
2 – Alexi
2 – Lil Lohse
2 – Lohse
0 – Doogan

MAAC OPENING ROUND (2 points each):
The mostly inconsequential opening round in the MAAC took place in Albany on Friday night with a pair of games between the bottom four teams in the conference.  Bry was the only one to hit both of these.  Stri and Waters ended up missing both.

#9 Manhattan 94 – #8 Loyola (MD) 79.  Manhattan, after a pretty terrible regular season, salvages a little pride by winning their opening round game against Loyola on Friday night.  Their reward?  A matchup with the MAAC powerhouse, Siena, on Saturday.  Bry was the only one in the CTC to pick Manhattan in this one.  No one had either of these teams beating Siena in the quarters.

#7 Canisius 72 – #10 Marist 54.  It’s official, the Red Foxes of Marist are a 1-win team in 2009-10.  They lost by 18 to Canisius on Friday, mercifully ending their season at an atrocious 1-29.  Canisius will move on to the quarters, where they will face #2 Fairfield on Saturday.  Stri and Waters both had Marist.  In fact, they both had Marist winning two games in the tournament.  The Canisius win was biggest for Teddy, KA, and Lynch, as they all have Canisius in the semis.

MAAC STANDINGS (prior MAAC titles; *perfect bracket):
*6 – Bry (’09*)
2 – Alexi
2 – Doogan
2 – Ina
2 – J (’08)
2 – LA
2 – Lil Lohse
2 – Lohse
2 – Lynch
2 – Teddy
0 – Stri
0 – Waters

CTC Day 4 Preview

So, remember that cliche that I probably used way too many times, the calm before the storm?  Well, the skies are darkening…the storm is a-brewin’.  Here we go.  A whole slew of CTC games today and tonight, setting up for a huge Saturday.  The first week will be defined by the next 36 hours, so without any more fanfare, let’s get right to it.

MISSOURI VALLEY QUARTERFINALS (12 points each):
After the opening round appetizer last night, the main course of a Valley quadruple-header begins today.  Only two entries lost semifinalists yesterday, so there are probably going to be a ton of CTC points handed out today in St. Louis.

#8 Drake vs. #1 N. Iowa (15-3).  After an exciting, last-second win last night, Drake is rewarded with a noon (local time) tip against nationally-ranked and top-seeded N. Iowa.  The defending regular season and tournament champs repeated this year in the regular season and will try to do the same here in the tournament, starting today.  Teddy is the only one who does not have UNI winning this game.  He has S. Illinois, so he’ll be rooting or Drake to zero everyone out on this game.  Four entries (Bry, Doogan, Stri, and Lil Lohse) have N. Iowa as their MVC champs, so they will be wearing the purple and gold of UNI this afternoon.

#5 Bradley (9-9) vs. #4 Creighton (10-8).  Two solid programs face off in the second game of the MVC quadruple-header.  Both teams played tough non-conference schedules in expectations of possible at-large consideration.  But, both teams struggled through a tough MVC to finish around .500, leaving them far from the bubble.  Now, their only chance at The Dance is to win three straight in Arch Madness.  The field is completely split on this game, with half having Bradley and the other half having Creighton.  The contestants with the most at stake here are Teddy (Creighton), Lynch and Alexi (Bradley) who have this game’s winner going to the finals.  No one has either of these teams winning the MVC.

#7 Missouri St. vs. #2 Wichita St. (12-6).  Missouri St. struggled with The Valley’s worst team, Evansville, last night, but they survived and now get a shot at #2 Wichita St.  The Shockers had a decent season, but are not really on the bubble, so they need to win this tournament.  This is a pretty big game for the CTC, actually.  Teddy, Bry, and Doogan all have Missouri St. in this upset.  Teddy even has them winning the entire thing.  On the other side of this one are Ina, J, Alexi, Waters, Lynch, and KA who all have Wichita St. winning the MVC outright.  Lohse is the only one who cannot score from this game, as he had Evansville winning here.

#6 Indiana St. (9-9) vs. #3 Illinois St. (11-7).  The nightcap of Arch Madness’s maddest day is an interesting matchup between a pair of ISU’s.  Both teams are definitely contenders for this tournament, but it has to start tonight.  J and Ina both have Indiana St. in the upset, though neither of them have them going any further.  Bry, Doogan, and both Lohses have stake in Illinois St., as they have them in the finals.  Lohse actually has them winning the tournament.

ATLANTIC SUN SEMIFINALS (8 points each):
Well, the smoke has cleared from a two-day long quadruple-header of carnage in Macon, GA, for the top teams in the A-Sun.  The regular season ended with a 4-way tie for first, so it was expected that the semifinals would feature those four teams battling it out over two days for the right to represent the A-Sun in the Big Dance.  But, things don’t always go as planned, as three of them failed to make it.  Only the #2-seed Jacksonville survived, while the other three were upset.  This sets up a surprising, but interesting semifinal double-header tonight in Macon.  As far as the CTC goes, Bry will try to continue his perfection in the A-Sun.  Any points are good from here on out for anyone, though, because there are already six people who has lost their champion pick–three of whom are totally finished for this bracket, including two-time defending champ, J.

#8 Kennessaw St. vs. #5 E. Tennessee St.  Maybe the biggest surprise of the CTC so far was the KSU Owls upsetting #1-seed Lipscomb on Wednesday night.  Now, they get the benefit of an extra day off as they play the Buccaneers of ETSU.  Bry, Ina, Stri, Alexi, Waters, Lynch, and Teddy all have ETSU winning this game.  No one, though, has them winning it all.  No one has KSU winning this game.

#6 Mercer vs. #2 Jacksonville.  The Dolphins of Jacksonville are the only co-champ still standing, but it’s not like they have an easy road.  After a night off, they play the host school, Mercer, tonight in the semis.  No one has Mercer winning this game, but seven people have Jacksonville (KA, Lohse, Lynch, Waters, Alexi, Ina, and Bry).  Six of them (all by KA) have Jacksonville winning the whole thing.

HORIZON LEAGUE QUARTERFINALS: (8 points each):
Remember the Horizon League (a 2x bracket)?  They played their opening round on Day One of The Challenge and now continue the tournament with the quarterfinals today and the semifinals tomorrow, at Butler.  Then, they will take three more days off before playing the finals on March 9th at the home court of the highest remaining seed.  In case we’ve forgotten in the madness that was the past couple days, Teddy, Ina, Doogan, and Lohse were all perfect with their opening round picks in the HL.

#7 Detroit vs. #3 Green Bay.  In a big NFC Central matchup, we will see if Barry Sanders can carry the Lions over some old quarterback who is about to stab his fans in the ba…wait, this is March college hoops, not Thanksgiving football?  My bad.  Anyway, Detroit, the only team to pull off a road upset on Tuesday night now gets to play a neutral-site game against Green Bay for the right to take on #2 Wright St. in the semis.  Green Bay took care of business against the #10-seed Youngstown St. on Tuesday, so they find themselves three wins from dancing.  Four people (J, Stri, Waters, and Lil Lohse) have Valparaiso winning this game, so they have no shot at points here, which is bad because the game is relatively split amongst the remaining entries, so they are going to lose points somewhere.  Doogan, Alexi, Lohse, and Teddy all have Detroit to win again tonight.  Lohse even had the Titans in the finals, so this is big for him.  The biggest Green Bay fans are Ina and KA, as they both have them in the finals.  KA actually has them winning it all.

#5 Cleveland St. vs. #4 Milwaukee.  Both Cleveland St. and Milwaukee survived at home on Tuesday night to set up a pretty good quarterfinal matchup between two of the more formidable teams in this conference.  The winner will get to play against the hosts and nationally-ranked Butler on Saturday night.  Everyone still has scoring possibilities in this game, and they are pretty spread out, so this is a pretty big game for the CTC.  Seven entries have Milwaukee, while five have Cleveland St. (Bry, Stri, Alexi, Lynch, and Lil Lohse).  Ten of the twelve entries have Butler winning the semi, but there are two with finalists playing in this game.  KA has Milwaukee in the final; Lynch has Cleveland St. winning it all.

OHIO VALLEY SEMIFINALS (8 points each):
Just like the Horizon League, the Ohio Valley has taken a couple of days off before continuing their tournament.  Lohse is the only one to hit all four quarterfinal games, so he tries to continue his perfect OVC bracket.

#4 E. Illinois vs. #1 Murray St.  E. Illinois, who edged E. Kentucky on Tuesday night, now gets to play #1 Murray St. in Nashville for a spot in the finals.  Murray St. hammered Tennessee St. on Tuesday by 33.  Everyone has Murray St. winning this game, except KA, who had E. Kentucky.  She will be rooting for EIU to zero everything out.  Lohse and Stri wouldn’t necessarily mind a Murray St. loss because everyone else has the Racers winning this tournament.

#6 Tennessee Tech vs. #2 Morehead St.  Morehead St., like Murray St., won their quarterfinal by 33.  And, now they get the only team that pulled off a road upset on Tuesday, Tennessee Tech in the semis.  Lil Lohse and KA have already lost this game, having picked Austin Peay to win this.  Everyone else, except Lynch has Morehead St. winning this game.  Lynch has the big upset of Tennessee Tech.  Stri and Lohse have the most at stake with Morehead, as they have them winning it all.

COLONIAL OPENING ROUND (6 points each):
With all due respect to Arch Madness in St. Louis, I think that the Colonial tournament is clearly the best tournament of the first week.  Eleven games in four days, including some always intriguing matchups and players.  This conference never fails to bring excitement, beginning from the opening tip at noon.  Alexi had a nice 75-point performance in ’08 to take the title, but that was nothing, as Ina DOUBLED that last year, only missing one opening round game on her way to a 150-point title-winning performance.  Lynch had just 18 last year, while Doogan has stuggled for two years now in the CAA.

#9 UNC-Wilmington (5-13) vs. #8 Towson (6-12).  Pat’s Cats have not exactly taken to the coaching style of Pat Kennedy, at least until the very end of 6th season at Towson.  The Tigers just started playing better down the stretch, altogether, had another disappointing season.  UNC-Wilmington wasn’t any better, as they finished just 5-13 in the CAA.  The winner of this opening round game will play the top-seeded ODU Monarchs tomorrow afternoon.  Only 5 CTC’ers had the favored Towson winning this game (Ina, Alexi, Waters, Lohse, and KA).  11 of the 12 contestants have Old Dominion beating whomever comes from this pair.  The one for whom this game is really big is KA, who has Towson going all the way to the CAA finals.

#12 Delaware (3-15) vs. #5 VCU (11-7).  The defending champs, VCU, just missed the first-round bye and has to play Delaware in the opening round.  It’s not quite a bye, but it’s close, as the Blue Hens (despite a couple of star Delaware high schoolers on the squad) were incredibly disappointing this year all year long.  The winner of this game will play George Mason in the quarters.  Only Waters (not even UD alum, Lynch) took the Blue Hens in this one.  Waters does not have them going any further.  The biggest VCU fans among us are Lohse and Teddy, who have the Rams winning the CAA for the second straight year.

#10 Georgia St. (5-13) vs. #7 Hofstra (10-8).  If you only looked at the CTC picks, you would be shocked to learn that Hofstra was a 7-seed and only 2 games over .500 in league play.  This game, tonight, could have major CTC implications because of the incredible belief in the Flying Dutchmen (yeah, I know they changed that nickname from the greatest nickname in college sports to the worst, but I refuse to acknowledge the change).  Not one of the 12 entries has Georgia St. winning this game.   But, it doesn’t stop there.  The winner of this game would play the #2-seed Northeastern in the quarters.  Only 3 of the 12 (Stri, Alexi, and Teddy) actually have Northeastern in that game; everyone else has Hofstra in the semis.  And, then, just as interesting, no one has Hofstra going any further.  All 9 have them losing in the semis.  Interesting.

#11 James Madison (4-14) vs. #6 Drexel (11-7).  The Drexel Dragons has a real shot at the #4-seed and the first-round bye that comes with it, but they dropped a couple key games down the stretch and find themselves playing in the opening round, as the #6-seed.  Their opponent is the 11-seeded JMU Dukes in the late game tonight in Richmond.  Bry and KA are the only two that picked James Madison in this upset.  J has the most at stake with Drexel, as he and his Philly roots have Drexel going all the way to the finals.

WEST COAST OPENING ROUND: (4 points each):
The WCC opens their tourney tonight in Vegas.  A conference that has been utterly dominated by Gonzaga has 7 teams chasing them now.  Also, the WCC sets it up to really favor the better seeds, as the top two seeds have double-byes, while the 3- and 4-seeds have single byes.  The 5- through 8-seeds have to win three straight games to qualify for The Dance.  Waters won the ’08 WCC title by getting everything correct until the final.  Ina took last year’s title with a perfect WCC bracket.

#8 Pepperdine (3-11) vs. #5 Loyola Marymount (7-7).  This year is the 20th anniversary of the untimely passing of Philly’s own Hank Gathers and the amazingly inspirational run of Bo Kimble and LMU in his honor.  Do they have the magic to bring it back?  We will find out tonight as they open their postseason against Pepperdine, with the winner getting #4 San Francisco in the quarters.  KA, Waters, and Bry all have Pepperdine in the upset.  Ina, Stri, and Alexi all have LMU winning two games in this tournament.

#7 Santa Clara (3-11) vs. #6 San Diego (3-11).  San Diego’s remarkable run to the WCC title two years ago, with a young team, created expectations that they clearly have not fulfilled in the two subsequent seasons.  They did come together at the end of the season to grab the 6-seed, pitting them against Santa Clara in the opening round.  The winner of this game will play #3 Portland in the quarters tomorrow night.  Lil Lohse, Lynch, Doogan, J, and Bry all have Santa Clara in this one, though none of them have them beating Portland.  KA believes in San Diego, as she has them beating not only Santa Clara here, but Portland in the quarters and St. Mary’s in the semis before losing in the finals.

SoCON OPENING ROUND (2 points each):
The SoCon gets going today with quadruple-headers today and tomorrow.  In a conference that used to be all Davidson’s, a new team, Wofford, emerged as the dominant team this year.  College of Charleston and Appalachian St. also had decent years and ought to be considered legit contenders for this title.  Lynch dominated the SoCon last year, after Ina had won it the year before.  Doogan, Bry, and Alexi all struggled last year.

#6N Elon (5-13) vs. #3S Davidson (11-7).  Stephen Who?  Oh, right, Stephen Curry.  The guy who is one of the top two favorites for NBA Rookie of the Year this year.  Ya, that guy is pretty good.  Davidson was okay without Curry, but he clearly was the guy that made that team so dominant for the past couple of years.  Bry, Ina, Stri, Lynch, and KA all have Elon in a big upset here over Davidson.  Doogan, Alexi, Lohse, and Teddy all have Davidson winning two games in this tournament.

#5S Furman (7-11) vs. #4N UNC-Greensboro (6-12).  The Paladins of Furman open their postseason against UNC-Greensboro, with the winner to face top-seeded Wofford in the quarters.  This shows you the lack of balance between the two divisions, as Furman has a better record, but a worse seed than Greensboro.  Only Teddy, J, Stri, and Waters went with Greensboro in this one.  Waters has Greensboro knocking off Wofford next round, so he needs this win.  KA has Furman beating Wofford, so she also needs it, just on the other side.

#6S Georgia-Southern (6-12) vs. #3N Chattanooga (6-12).  Another example of the difference between the two divisions has the 6-seed from the South playing the 3-seed from the North between teams with the same conference record.  The winner of this game will play College of Charleston in the quarters.  Bry, Ina, Doogan, Alexi, and both Lohses have GA-Southern in the upset.  None of them have GA-Southern moving on after that, though.  KA is the only one that has Chattanooga moving past the quarters.  She has them winning the whole tournament, so this is a big game for her.

#5N Samford (5-13) vs. #4S The Citadel (9-9).  The Citadel opens their postseason with a game with Samford in the nightcap.  The winner of this game will play Appalachian St. in the quarters.  Doogan is the only one that has Samford in this game, so he could pick up some nice points on the field if he hits this one.  Bry, J, Lynch, and KA all have The Citadel winning the quarterfinal matchup with App St.  Lynch even has them going all the way to the finals.

MAAC OPENING ROUND (2 points each):
The Siena Conference…I mean the MAAC…gets underway today with a pair of opening round games in Albany.  Every conference tournament game is exciting and intriguing, but these are not exactly two matchups that have anyone glued to their ESPN ScoreTrackers.  Bry is coming off of a perfect MAAC bracket in ’09, so he will try and continue that trend.  J won the MAAC in ’08.  Alexi and Lynch have historically struggled forecasting this tournament.

#9 Manhattan (4-14) vs. Loyola (MD) (6-10).  The Manhattan Jaspers have really fallen off, finishing only above hopeless Marist in the MAAC.  They take on Loyola tonight in the 8-9 opening round game for the right to get destroyed by Siena tomorrow.  Bry is the only one who has Manhattan in this minor upset.  And, no one has either of these teams beating Siena next round.  This game is about as meaningless as there is in the CTC…but somehow, I’m still interested.

#10 Marist (1-17) vs. #7 Canisius (8-10).  The Red Foxes of Marist finished the regular season with a 1-28 record, with their only win coming at home against Manhattan.  Canisius had a decent season, finishing just one game out of the 5-seed.  The winner of this game will play #2 Fairfield tomorrow in the quarters.  Stri and Waters both took the bait of the upset points and went with Marist.  In fact, both of them went a step further, taking Marist not only to beat Canisius tonight,  but then to knock off Fairfield tomorrow.  Three entries (Teddy, KA, and Lynch) all have Canisius going to the semis, so they need a win tonight.

CTC Day 3 Recap: Big Days for Bry & Doogan Tighten the Race

Day Three is a bit of a calm before the first storm, but there were still a decent amount of points to be won.  Bry and Doogan narrowed the gap to Lohse a bit with nice days.  Alexi also got himself back into the race with a decent day.  J fell off the pace, and Waters continued to struggle.

DAY 3 SCORES (days won):
56 – Bry (1)
52 – Alexi
52 – Doogan

BIG SOUTH SEMIFINALS (8 points each):
The first semifinals of the CTC were contested in the Big South Thursday night in a double-header on the campus of top-seed Coastal Carolina.  Seven CTC’ers (KA, both Lohses, Alexi, Stri, Doogan, and Bry) correctly predicted the final.  Only Waters failed to get either finalist.  Bry, Doogan, Alexi, both Lohses, and KA all have perfect Big South brackets so far.  At least two of them will finish with a perfect bracket.

#3 Winthrop 61 – #2 Radford 46.  In the first game of the double-header , the Golden Eagles of Winthrop suffocated the defending Big South champion Radford, holding the Highlanders to 25% from the floor.  Winthrop advances to the finals on Saturday.   It is a bit surprising, but more than half of the field got this one right.  Only Teddy, Lynch, Waters, J, and Ina lost it.  Ina lost the most, thought, as she had Radford winning the title.  She will join only Waters without a horse in the race on Saturday, as the rest of the field has either Winthrop or Coastal Carolina winning this tournament.

#1 Coastal Carolina 92 – #4 UNC-Asheville 73.  The best defensive team in the conference has now scored 82 and 92 in their two Big South tournament games.  That is scary stuff for the rest of the league, especially when Carolina gets to play the whole tournament at home.  In this semifinal nightcap, the host Chanticleers hammered Asheville to get themselves to ESPN on Saturday, as they will host Winthrop in the Big South title game.  Only Waters missed this one, and, in the process, he lost his Big South champion.  Seven CTC’ers have CCU winning this tournament, so this was a good result for them.

BIG SOUTH STANDINGS (*perfect bracket):
*34 – Alexi
*34 – Bry (’09)
*34 – Doogan
*34 – KA
*34 – Lil Lohse
*34 – Lohse
30 – Stri (’08)
24 – Ina
24 – Teddy
16 – J
16 – Lynch
12 – Waters

MISSOURI VALLEY OPENING ROUND (6 points each):
“Arch Madness” got underway Thursday night with an opening round double-header in St. Louis.  This is the first tournament that is worth additional points (this has a 3x multiplier).  Only half the field got both games on the first night.  The Lohses combined for an 0-for-4 night in The Valley.

#8 Drake 63 – #9 S. Illinois 61.  Madness!  Josh Young hit a buzzer-beater from 10 feet away to knock off S. Illinois and advance themselves to the quarterfinals against the heavily favored top seed, N. Iowa.  The field was totally split on this game, as half of the contestents loved the Drake and half hated the Drake.  The one who hates the Drake the most is Teddy, who had SIU going to the semifinals.  No one has Drake advancing past NIU.

#7 Missouri St. 52 – #10 Evansville 46.  For a while, it looked like the nightcap in St. Louis was going to be a pretty major upset.  The Evansville Aces, 2-16 in conference play this year, stayed with Missouri St. for most of the game, before falling behind for good and bailing out of Arch Madness.  The Bears held on in an ugly, ugly game.  The two Lohses missed on what would have been a nice upset pick.  Everyone else has the Bears.  The ugliness with which MSU won the game probably scares Bry and Doogan, as they have Missouri St. upsetting #2 Wichita St. tonight.  And, Teddy is probably terrified, as he has MSU winning the whole thing.  But, a win is a win is a win, right?

MISSOURI VALLEY STANDINGS:
*12 – Alexi
*12 – Doogan
*12 – Ina (’08)
*12 – KA
*12 – Lynch
*12 – Waters
6 – Bry
6 – J
6 – Stri (’09)
6 – Teddy
0 – Lil Lohse
0 – Lohse

ATLANTIC SUN QUARTERFINALS (4 points each):
The second part of the A-Sun quarters took place on Thursday night and the madness continued.  Bry completed a most unlikely sweep of quarters with two more upset picks.  Everyone else went 1-1 last night, except KA, who missed them both.

#5 E. Tennessee St. 72 – #4 Campbell 64.  The Buccaneers, led by 32 points from Micah Williams, knocked off regular season co-champ Campbell in the first quarterfinal of the night.  The Bucs will advance to Friday’s semi to take on the surprising #8-seed Kennessaw St.  Only J, Lohse, and KA missed this upset pick.  J and Lohse both got hit hard, as they had Campbell in the finals.  An amazing number (7) of CTC’ers have ETSU in the finals, so this was a big win for Teddy, Lynch, Waters, Alexi, Stri, Ina, and Bry.

#6 Mercer 87 – #3 Belmont 81.  When the dust settled on the two-day long A-Sun quarterfinals, three of the four regular season co-champs had been eliminated from the tournament without winning a single game.  The host school, Mercer, finished an unlikely quarterfinal round with a win over #3-seed Belmont in a wild game.  There were also some serious CTC implications associated with this result.  Bry and Lohse were the only ones to take the upset, but the Belmont made waves.  Lil Lohse had Belmont going to the finals, and J, Doogan, Stri, and Teddy all had Belmont winning the whole thing.

ATLANTIC SUN STANDINGS:
*38 – Bry
32 – Lohse
28 – Lynch (’09t)
22 – J (’08, ’09t)
10 – Alexi
10 – Doogan
10 – Ina
10 – Lil Lohse
10 – Stri
10 – Teddy
10 – Waters
4 -KA

NEC QUARTERFINALS (4 points each):
The NEC kicked off Thursday night with four quarterfinals at the various campus sites.  Most of the games were highly contested, but the home favorites all came through in the end to advance to the semis.  Bry, Ina, Stri, Alexi, Lohse, Teddy, and Doogan all went chalk and were rewarded with a four-for-four night in the NEC.  Waters was the only one to only get two right.

#1 Quinnipiac 84 – Monmouth 75.  Five players in double-figures allowed top-seeded Quinnipiac to hold off a game Monmouth squad by nine Thursday night to advance to the NEC semis on Sunday.  Only Waters got this one wrong and it hurt, as he had Monmouth in the finals.  There are five CTC’ers that have QU winning this thing.

#4 Long Island 63 – #5 Farleigh Dickinson 61.  It’s not often that you see a game-winning basket in a 2-point game occur with 1:48 to go in the game.  The NEC…it’s fannnn-tastic.  Yes, LIU’s Kenny Onyechi git the go-ahead bucket (LIU’s last points of the game) with 1:48 to play, and FDU went 0-7 the rest of the way, as the Blackbirds hold on to win and advance to a semifinal on Sunday at Quinnipiac.  Lil Lohse, Waters, and J all missed this pick, but none of them had FDU going any further, so not a big loss.

#2 Robert Morris 71 – #7 C. Connecticut St. 63.  The Colonials of RMC took care of business against CCSU Thursday night, as they are now just two wins away from repeating as the NEC representative to the Big Dance.  Lynch and KA both missed on this big upset pick, but neither of them had CCSU going any further.

#3 Mount St. Mary’s 65 – #6 St. Francis (PA) 50.  MSM wins their 11th consecutive game, as they hammer St. Francis (PA) Thursday night.  To get to a dozen straight, they will have to go into Pittsburgh and beat Robert Morris on Sunday in the NEC semis.  No one in the CTC had St. Francis winning this game, but some were more interested than others, as half the field has MSM winning this whole tournament.

NEC STANDINGS (prior NEC titles; *perfect bracket):
*16 – Alexi
*16 – Bry (’09t*)
*16 – Doogan
*16 – Ina
*16 – Lohse
*16 – Stri (’08, ’09t*)
*16 – Teddy
12 – J
12 – KA
12 – Lil Lohse
12 – Lynch
8 – Waters

CTC Day 3 Preview

Day Three of the CTC is the last “rest day” before the craziness that is the first weekend.  The Big South is the first conference to hit the semis.  The A-Sun continues their quarters from last night.  The NEC gets going.  And, The Valley, one of the two jewels of the first week (along with the Colonial, which starts tomorrow) has a pair of opening round games, as an appetizer to a quarterfinal quadruple-header tomorrow in St. Louis.  Lohse followed up a perfect Day One with an imperfect, but victorious Day Two, so we’ll see if he can continue.  Lynch tied Lohse yesterday to get him back in business after a bit of a struggle on Day One.  And, Teddy began with Patriot League perfection yesterday and is very much in the running for the top spot.  Day Three…next.

BIG SOUTH SEMIFINALS (8 points each):
At the end of the day, we will have our first championship matchup, as the first conference to play their semis is the Big South.  Two nights ago, all four top seeds took care of business on their home floors, and now the scene shifts to Coastal Carolina for a semifinal double-header at the home of the top seeded Chanticleers.  Bry is the defending champion of the Big South, taking the title from Stri, who won in ’08.

#3 Winthrop vs. #2 Radford.  In the first half of the semifinal double-header in Conway, SC (the Coastal Carolina homecourt), the past two Big South champions will meet for a spot in the finals.  This game is as big as it gets in the Big South, as far as The Challenge goes.  Five have Radford (Teddy, Lynch, Waters, J, and Ina) and seven have Winthrop.  But, even more importanly, four people have their champion playing in this game.  Alexi, Lil Lohse, and KA have Winthrop winning this tournament.  Ina believes in a Radford repeat this year.

#4 UNC-Asheville at #1 Coastal Carolina.  The top-seed in the Big South gets to host the semifinal double-header tonight, and that honor goes to C. Carolina.  The team that pays the “road” price is UNC-Asheville, as they are the road team in this semifinal.  In a very rare near-consensus finalist, 11 of the 12 contestants have C. Carolina winning this game and advancing to the Big South title game.  The only dissident is Waters, who has UNC-Asheville winning this game and the whole tournament.

MISSOURI VALLEY OPENING ROUND (6 points each):
The greatest name for a conference tournament, “Arch Madness,” kicks off today in St. Louis.  The conference affectionately known as “The Valley” is our first non-1x conference to get underway.  A lot of points are awarded in The Valley, so the importance is ramped up.  This is the most valuable tournament of the first week of games (along with the Colonial), so the early leader might be decided by the results in St. Louis.  Stri is trying to repeat as The Valley champion, after edging out Ina and Alexi last year.  In ’08, Ina dominated The Valley with a whopping 120 points.  J is trying to right the ship in this conference after back-to-back last place performances.

#10 Evansville (2-16) vs. #7 Missouri St. (8-10).  Evansville made something out of a pretty awful season by knocking off nationally-ranked N. Iowa last week.  They will try to take that momentum into their opening round matchup with Missouri St.  The Bears, on the other hand, started strong, but have struggled down the stretch.  They had a great non-conference, where they went 10-1, including wins over Auburn and St. Louis.  Their only non-conference loss was a close loss at Arkansas.  But, they did not carry that into conference play, and even fell a game short of a first-round bye, so their shot at redemption has to start tonight.  It’s a pretty big game for The Challenge because both of these teams figure into a couple of our brackets in big ways.  Both Lohses have Evansville in the upset, and Big Lohse actually have Evansville winning two games in the tournament, so he’s up for some big-time upset points if that comes through.  Everyone else has MSU in the first-round, but Bry and Doogan both have them beating Wichita St. in the next round.  And, Teddy has even more faith in the Bears.  He has them coming from the opening round to win four games in four days and winning Arch Madness.

#9 S. Illinois (6-12) vs. Drake (7-11).  It is teams like the Salukis of SIU that remind us just how impressive the Gonzaga run has been over the last decade-plus.  It looked, for a time, that SIU would be that “mid-major” that became a national contender year in and year out.  But, much like fellow conference-mates like Creighton and Bradley and other mid-majors with “aspirations,” like Winthrop, Davidson, E. Michigan, VCU, Vermont, Hofstra, Utah St., and even the Final Four program of George Mason have fallen victim to the difficulties of sustained success at the mid-major level.  Even Siena, once this class graduates will probably slip back.  But, of all of these teams, it looked most of all like the Salukis would have staying power.  They were built around defense and hard-nosed play (things you can teach non-McDonald’s All-Americans).  But, it just hasn’t happened.  They slipped to just about rock-bottom this year, finishing 9th place in the Missouri Valley.  Well, they have one last four-game run to make something out of this season and it starts tonight against The Valley’s darlings of two years ago, Drake.  Most people in The Challenge actually took the Salukis in a minor upset over Drake.  No one who picked Drake has them beating N. Iowa in the next round.  And, all of those who took SIU, only Teddy has them going to the semis.  So, this game is biggest for Teddy because if he can get two wins from the Salukis, he is in for a ton of upset points.

ATLANTIC SUN QUARTERFINALS (4 points each):
The Day After…  The A-Sun continues in the aftermath of #1-seed Lipscomb falling to #8-seed Kennessaw St.  The 3- and 4-seeds are in action today, as J tries to continue his path towards an A-Sun three-peat.

#5 E. Tennessee St. (13-7) vs. #4 Campbell (14-6).  Campbell, despite finishing in a tie for first, loses the tiebreaker and has to play ETSU (the preseason conference favorite who only finished a game out of first) in the first round.  This is a big swing game in The Challenge because very few people seemed to have faith in #1 Lipscomb (and now they’re gone), so many people have a finalist coming out of this quarterfinal matchup.  Actually, most people like the underdog ETSU squad in the first round, as only three (KA, J, and Lohse) have Campbell here.  J and Lohse have Campbell in the finals.  Shockingly, more than half the field (Bry, Stri, Alexi, Waters, Ina, Teddy, and Lynch) actually have ETSU in the finals.

#6 Mercer (10-10) vs. #3 Belmont (14-6).  Technically, this is a “neutral-site” conference tournament game, but it is played on the campus of Mercer University.  Bry and Lohse both have Mercer in this one–together again for an A-Sun upset, so who knows.  This time, though, they are the only two that believe in the underdog.  An upset here would be rough on Teddy, J, Doogan, and Stri, as they all have the Belmont Bruins taking the A-Sun.  And J, after nailing the KSU upset yesterday and being the two-time defending champion in this conference, knows his A-Sun hoops.

NEC QUARTERFINALS (4 points each):
And, the NEC kicks off tonight with four quarterfinal matchups between the eight teams that qualified for the NEC tournament (4 teams were left out of the mix).  Quinnipiac and defending champ, Robert Morris, tied for the regular season title, but Quinnipiac won the tiebreaker and grabs the #1 seed.  All games in this tournament will be at the home courts of the higher seeds.  The quarters are tonight, with the semis on Sunday and the finals next Wednesday.  Stri is the man to beat in the NEC, as he is the two-time defending champion in this conference, including last year’s title defense with a PERFECT bracket.  Bry also had this conference perfect last year, so they were the ’09 co-champs.

#6 St. Francis (PA) (9-9) at #3 Mount St. Mary’s (12-6).  MSM starts their NEC title quest with a home game against St. Francis (PA).  Even though all 12 contestants picked MSM to win this game, this game has the potential to make some major waves in the CTC.  Half of the field (more than any other school) has MSM winning the entire tournament.  Throw in KA and Ina, who have MSM going to the finals, 8 of the 12 contestants will be really hoping that MSM avoids the big upset tonight.

#8 Monmouth (8-10) at #1 Quinnipiac (15-3).  The top-seeded Bobcats of Quinnipiac open their quest for The Dance with a home game against a decent Monmouth team who struggled down the stretch to fall to 8th place.  Waters is the only one who picked Monmouth in what would be a KSU-like upset.  In fact, Waters believes so much in the Jersey school, that he has them goig to the finals of the NEC tournament, so this would be a huge upset for him tonight.  Bry, Doogan, Ina, Stri, and KA have the top-seeded Bobcats winning this whole tournament.

#7 C. Connecticut St. (9-9) at #2 Robert Morris (15-3).  The defending champs and this year’s co-champs, Robert Morris, grabs the #2 seed and home games all the way through unless they get QU in the finals.  The CCSU Blue Devils are the first ones to head to Pittsburgh to take on the Colonials in this year’s NEC tourney.  Lynch and KA both have this big upset, though neither of them have CCSU going any further.  Somewhat surprisingly, only Lil Lohse has Robert Morris winning this tournament, so this game is big for him.

#5 Farleigh Dickinson (10-8) at #4 Long Island (11-7).  The LIU Blackbirds ended up with the hotly-contested #4-seed with a couple final week victories.  Their reward?  A first-round home game before a semifinal that will probably be on the road against the top-seed.  FDU struggled down the stretch, but put it together enough to grab the #5-seed.  There are not that many CTC implications in this one because no one has either of these teams going any further than this round.  J, Waters, and Lil Lohse all went for the minor upset of FDU.
